The islands are situated near the margin of the continental platform that underlies most of the northern half of the Bering Sea (fig. 1). The islands are made up mostly of olivine basalt and basanite flows, pillow breccias, pyroclastic deposits, sills and dikes, most of which are nepheline normative (Barth, 1956). The volcanic rocks are late Pliocene to Holocene in age (Cox and others, 1966; D. M. Hopkins and M. L. The purpose of the study was to determine the relation of ground water to surface water, to estimate the quantity of ground water that moves to the Duchesne River, and to assess the probable effect of increased ground-water withdrawal on streamflow.</p><p>The primary source of water for the study area is precipitation on the highlands adjacent to and north of the area and on the valley itself. Discharge from the area is mainly by flow in the Duchesne River. Adjacent to and within the valley, ground water and surface water are intimately related, and they can interchange in several ways due to both natural and manmade conditions.</p><p>Aquifers in the upper Duchesne River valley range from Paleozoic to Quaternary in age. The consolidated aquifers receive recharge from highland precipitation and streamflow, and probably from interformational transfer of water. The consolidated rocks discharge water through springs and by interformational transfer of water to the valley fill of Quaternary age.</p><p>The valley fill, which is composed mainly of outwash and related glacial debris, constitutes the main ground-water reservoir in the valley. The fill is, in general, highly permeable and transmits water rapidly. It is recharged by a small amount of underflow beneath the Duchesne River and its tributaries, by intermittent precipitation directly on the fill, by interformational movement of ground water from the adjacent consolidated rocks, and by seepage of surface water from streams, canals, and irrigated fields. The ground water in the fill is unconfined. The volume of ground water stored in the fill and theoretically available by gravity drainage is a minimum of 40,000 acre-feet (50 cubic hectometres); this volume fluctuates by a maximum of 10 percent annually.</p><p>Ground water is discharged from the valley fill by wells and springs, by evapotranspiration, and by seepage into the Duchesne River. The discharge from wells and springs used for domestic, stock, public, and irrigation purposes in 1974 was about 2 cubic feet per second (0.06 cubic metres per second). The discharge by evapotranspiration was about 4 cubic feet per second (0.1 cubic metre per second). Discharge of ground water by seepage to the Duchesne River was about 39 cubic feet per second (1.1 cubic metres per second).</p><p>Most ground water, except in parts of the Uinta Formation, and all the surface water sampled in the study area, was fresh.</p><p>Because of the high permeability of the valley fill and because unconsumed ground water discharges to the Duchesne River, it can be concluded that lowering ground-water levels by large withdrawals of ground water in the upper Duchesne River valley ultimately would diminish the baseflow of the Duchesne River by about the amount of ground water with-drawn minus the amount salvaged from evapotranspiration.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr76771","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Utah Department of Natural Resources, Division of Water Rights","usgsCitation":"Hood, J.W., 1976, Hydrologic evaluation of the Upper Duchesne River Valley, Northern Uinta Basin area, Utah: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 76-771, Report: 51 p.; 3 Plates: 20.72 x 17.94 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr76771.","productDescription":"Report: 51 p.; 3 Plates: 20.72 x 17.94 inches or smaller","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":425757,"rank":5,"type":{"id":29,"text":"Figure"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0771/figure-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":425756,"rank":4,"type":{"id":29,"text":"Figure"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0771/figure-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":425755,"rank":3,"type":{"id":29,"text":"Figure"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0771/figure-5.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":425754,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0771/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":141897,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0771/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Utah","otherGeospatial":"northern Uinta Basin area, Upper Duchesne River Valley","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -111.07154298066295,\n              40.613633416605694\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.07154298066295,\n              40.09912664272554\n            ],\n            [\n              -110.32201356783139,\n              40.09912664272554\n            ],\n            [\n              -110.32201356783139,\n              40.613633416605694\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.07154298066295,\n              40.613633416605694\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a1ae4b07f02db606af0","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hood, James W.","contributorId":66115,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hood","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":159889,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The area is in the Mississippi Plateau region of Kentucky and lies within the drainage basin of the Cumberland River and Tradewater River basins. In 1974 municipal water-supply systems utilized about 1,115,000 gal of water per day from Barkley Lake. This use is expected to nearly double by the year 2000. Rural water supplies are obtained primarily from three geologic units - the Ste. Genevieve Limestone and the upper and lower members of the St. Louis Limestone. All three units can yield sufficient water for domestic and stock purposes , but the Ste. Genevieve at Princeton has yielded as much as 150 gal/min to individual wells. The chemical quality of both surface and ground water is generally good, except that the basal part of the lower member of the St. Louis Limestone may yield water high in sulfate and hydrogen sulfide. Rates of movement are dependent upon the magnitude of the accidental release and the hydrologic conditions at the time of the release. For example, during wet periods, a contaminant resulting from a 5,000-gallon (19,000-1itre) release on the land surface would enter the ground-water system in about 2 to 12 hours. Ground-water flow in the Rocky Flats Alluvium might move the contaminant eastward at a rate of about 3 to 11 feet (0.9 to 3.4 metres) per day, if it remains dissolved. Maximum time to a point of discharge would be about 3 years; minimum time could be a few days. A contaminant entering a stream would then move at a rate of about 60 feet (18 metres) per minute under pool-and-riffle conditions. The rate of movement might be about 420 feet (128 metres) per minute under open-channel-flow conditions following intense thunderstorms.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr76268","usgsCitation":"Hurr, R.T., 1976, Hydrology of a nuclear-processing plant site, Rocky Flats, Jefferson County, Colorado: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 76-268, 77 leaves :ill., maps (2 fold. in envelope) ;29 cm.; (137 p., scale 1:24,000 - PGS), https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr76268.","productDescription":"77 leaves :ill., maps (2 fold. in envelope) ;29 cm.; (137 p., scale 1:24,000 - PGS)","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":142937,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0268/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":37357,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0268/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37358,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0268/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37359,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0268/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37360,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0268/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"scale":"24000","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a17e4b07f02db60435a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hurr, R. No flooding occurred downstream from American Falls Reservoir. The inundated areas and maximum water-surface elevations are shown in a series of 17 hydrologic atlases. The area covered by the atlases extends from Teton Dam downstream to American Falls Reservoir, a distance of 100 miles. The extent of flooding shown on the maps was obtained by field inspections and aerial photographs made during and immediately after the flood. There may be small isolated areas within the boundaries shown that were not flooded, but the identification of these sites was beyond the scope of the study. The elevation data shown are mean-sea-level elevations of high-water marks identified in the field. This particular map (in the 17-map series) shows conditions in the Woodville quadrangle. About 45 miles (72 kilometers) of profile were made on the Caloosahatchee River Estuary and San Carlos Bay. Two different acoustic energy sources, a high resolution boomer and a 45-electrode high resolution sparker, both having a power input of 300 joules, were used to obtain both adequate penetration and good resolution. The seismic profiles show that much of the strata of middle Miocene to Holocene age apparently are extensively folded but not faulted. Initial interpretations indicate that: (1) the top of the Hawthorn Formation (which contains the upper Hawthorn aquifer) has much relief due chiefly to apparent folding; (2) the limestone, sandstone, and unconsolidated sand and phosphorite, which together compose the sandstone aquifer, appear to be discontinuous; (3) the green clay unit of the Tamiami Formation contains large scale angular beds dipping eastward; and (4) numerous deeply cut alluvium-filled paleochannels underlie the Caloosahatchee River. It also outlines some of the current problems related to the local geology and hydrology or ones that may arise as a result of urbanization and industrialization of the area. The city is in the Coastal Plain physiographic province and is underlain at shallow depths by sand, clay, silt, gravel, and lignite. These post-Midway strata (Wilcox and younger) make up geologic units belonging to the uppermost Paleocene, Eocene, and Pliocene ( ) Series of the Tertiary System and to the Pleistocene and Holocene Series of the Quaternary System. Environmental problems of immediate or future concern are associated with six general topics: (1) aggregate resources, (2) foundation materials, (3) earthquake hazards, (4) flood hazards, (5) water resources, and (6) solid waste disposal. Consideration of these topics provide an overall insight into the close interrelation of the problems and the need for coordinated studies of the geology and hydrology at Memphis. Since the mid-1950 's dissolved oxygen quality has gradually improved owing to low-flow augmentation, the achievement of basinwide secondary treatment, and the use of other waste-management practices. As a result, summer dissolved-oxygen levels have increased, salmon runs have returned, and the overall effort is widely regarded as a singular water-quality success. To document the improved dissolved-oxygen regimen, the U.S. Geological Survey conducted intensive studies of the Willamette during the summer low-flow seasons of 1973 and 1974. During each summer the mean daily dissolved-oxygen levels were found to be higher than 5 milligrams per liter throughout the river. Because of the basinwide secondary treatment, carbonaceous deoxygenation rates were low. In addition, almost half of the biochemical oxygen demand entering the Willamette was from diffuse (nonpoint) sources rather than outfalls. These results indicated that point-source biochemical oxygen demand was no longer the primary cause of dissolved-oxygen depletion. Instead, the major causes of deoxygenation were nitrification in a shallow ' surface active ' reach below Salem and an anomalous oxygen demand (believed to be primarily of benthal origin) in Portland Harbor.
