This report contains maps showing location of observation wells and water-level changes from 1975 to 1976. The environments described consist of layers of sand or sandstone, 20 feet or more in thickness, that are immediately overlain and underlain by layers of shale or clay, 20 feet or more in thickness, and which occur in Units F, G, and H of Mesozoic age in areas where the top of each of these units lies at a depth equal to or greater than 1,500 feet below mean sea level.\r\n\r\nUsing a group of geologic parameters derived from or combining 20 categories of basic data, established from study of well cuttings and geophysical logs, a series of 18 regional maps was constructed. For each of three geologic units delineated in the subsurface, the maps illustrate the distribution of potential waste-storage reservoirs in terms of their areal extent, depth below land surface, and the thicknesses of the component reservoir and reservoir-seal rocks.\r\n\r\nThe depth of burial, physical character, and extent and thickness of the reservoirs that have waste-storage potential are variable. The range in variability appears to be broad enough to satisfy the geologic requirements for different types of waste storage.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Govt. Print. Further reports by other members of the Lithium Program will describe water samples from Nevada and samples from other states.</p>\n<p>The purpose of the sampling program was to determine if areas of anonalous lithium could be recognized by reconnaissance surface sampling. The results, however, have been indeterminate because most large lithium deposits occur at depth and appear to be formed when deeply buried. Many may not manifest themselves at the surface at all . Nonetheless, the data derived during the surface sampling program will be presented in this report.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Beginning in 1927, the placers were worked for 7 years by small-scale mining methods; in later years dragline excavators and a dredge were utilized. These deposits are important, not only because they are of high grade but because they are the only commercial source of platinum metals in the United States.&nbsp;</p><p>The bedded rocks of this area are sedimentary and volcanic rocks of late Paleozoic(?) age that have been intruded by a variety of ultrabasic rocks. The platinum metals of the placers have been derived from a mass of dunite and related rocks that constitute the bedrock of Red Mountain in the upper valley of the Salmon River. The western headwater tributaries of this stream are the fluvial conduits that have produced all the placers in the valley of the river.</p><p>The principal placers lie in two pay streaks, one in the valley floor of the Salmon River and the other in an ancient stream channel along the east side of this valley. The stream-channel deposit, called the bench pay streak, was formed in early Pleistocene time; its alluvial materials consist largely of clay derived from an ancient moraine believed to be of Nebraskan age. The valley-floor deposit, called the pay streak of the valley floor, consists of alluvial materials of fluvial and glaciofluvial origin whose ages range from Yarmouth to Holocene. Both channels contain high-grade placers that have yielded a large volume of platinum metals.</p><p>The platinum metals of these deposits are contained mainly in two alloys intergrown in a pseudoeutectic fabric. The major alloy is mainly platinum, with a small amount of iridium, still smaller amounts of rhodium and palladium, and probably some osmium and ruthenium. The minor alloy is dominantly iridium and osmium with less platinum and still less ruthenium and rhodium. The compositions of these two alloys are somewhat variable but tend to approach constant mean values. A small amount of free gold is recovered with the platinum metals. In addition to these two alloys, minute amounts of five platinum minerals have been identified. The weighted mean percentages of platinum, iridium, osmium, ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, and gold, as mined from 1936 to 1972, are respectively 82.25, 11.32, 2.15, 0.17, 1.30, 0.38, and 2.43.</p><p>The lodes from which these placers have been derived are, or have been, localized in the Red Mountain ridge, where the principal rocks are dunite and serpentinite. No lodes have been recognized, either because the platinum metals are sparsely distributed or because a large part of the platiniferous rock has been eroded. It is known, however, that the amounts of iridium, osmium, and ruthenium, or of osmiridium, decrease from south to north. Other generalizations regarding the composition and granularity of these metals have been deduced. The size and shape of the platinum lodes may have ranged from diffuse disseminations to high-grade concentrations in small loci. Under certain assumptions, the tenor of platinum metals in the dunite can be roughly approximated. Utilizing two totally different methods of computation, the mean tenor has been estimated to lie between 0.19 and 0.27 grain of platinum metals per cubic yard of dunite, or 0.014 to 0.023 gram per stere. A larger area that surrounds and includes the Alton EMRIA site proper contains estimated original identified coal resources of almost 309 million tons (281 megatonnes). Of these estimated resources in the EMRIA site proper, almost 27 million tons (25 megatonnes) are in beds more than 10 feet thick (3 metres); these beds are overlain by less-than 200 feet (60 metres) of overburden. In the larger area around and including the EMRIA site, about 88.5 million tons (81 megatonnes) are in beds more than ten feet (3 metres) thick with less than 200 feet (60 metres) of overburden. All the estimated resources are in the Smirl zone in the upper part of the Dakota Formation of Cretaceous age. </p><p>The coal has an apparent rank of subbituminous B, an average heating value of about 9,560 Btu, an average sulfur content of about 1.0 percent, and an average ash content of 7.2 percent. When compared with the average abundance of elements in the crust of the Earth as a whole, only selenium and boron were present in the Alton area coal samples in amounts an order of magnitude greater than the average crustal abundance. The study is concerned only with lakes encircled by water-table mounds that are at a higher altitude than lake level. Simulations of one-lake and multiple-lake systems in vertical sections show that for many hydrogeologic settings, the line (divide) separating local from regional ground-water flow systems is continuous beneath individual lakes. If the divide is continuous, there exists a point along it at which the head is a minimum compared to all other points along the divide. This point of minimum head is always greater than the head represented by lake level, therefore in such a setting there can be no movement of lake water through the lake bed to the ground-water system. Selection depended on infiltration area, location with respect to the ground-water divide and to planned transmission mains, tendency to retain storm runoff, underlying lithology, and depth to water table. The total maximum infiltration area of 14 selected basins is 60.2 acres, or 2,620,900 square feet (0.24 square kilometers). If 5-foot (1.5-meter) -high partitions were constructed in the basins to divide each into approximately equal halves and reclaimed water were applied in half of each basin to a depth of 5 feet (1.5 meters), using an application-rest cycle, a total area of 25.2 acres (0.10 square kilometers) would be available for supplemental recharge; the remaining infiltration area could be used for disposal of storm runoff. The major thrust of the flood extended throughout the central part of the Tennessee River basin and into adjacent basins. Recurrence intervals of peak discharges exceeded 100 years at 28 streamflow gaging stations. Major flooding occurred both on streams with flood-control reservoirs and on those which had none. Substantial reductions in peak stages and discharges in the Cumberland and Tennessee River basins were attained as a result of reservoir storage regulation. Seven lives were lost and total damage reportedly exceeded $60 million. The report presents an analysis of the storm and rainfall distribution; summaries of flood stages and discharges at 490 streamflow gaging stations, stages and contents of 45 reservoirs, flood crest stages, and hydrograph data consisting of gage height, discharge, and accumulated runoff at selected times at 92 gaging stations. The availability of aerial photographs obtained during the flood is summarized and flood damages are discussed.
