The principal aquifer being developed is composed of saturated and gravel of the Ogallala Formation of Tertiary age. Water-level declines of as much as 16 feet (4.9 meters) have occurred. Base flow of major streams draining the aquifer was reduced by as much as 19 percent between 1967 and 1975. Recoverable ground water in storage was reduced by about 1 percent. New withdrawal of ground water in 1975 was about 250 ,000 acre-feet (308 million cubic meters), compared with estimated recharge from precipitation of 176,000 acre-feet (217 million cubic meters). Water levels and streamflow will continue to decline if ground-water withdrawals continue at or greater than the 1975. These lineaments occur as alinements of surface geologic structures, linear valleys or ridges, and linear changes in tonal contrast marking differences in soil type, soil moisture, or vegetation. The lineaments are believed to represent the surface traces of zones of weakness deep within the earth's crust along which vertical or horizontal adjustments to earth stresses persistently recurred since at least Precambrian time.</p><p>A consistent pattern in the lineaments can be discerned in Alaska (fig. 1D), and throughout the North American Cordillera (fig. 2). This pattern is believed to represent a mosaic of crustal blocks, whose differential movements have guided the tectonic development of the Cordillera.</p><p>Areas in which mineral deposits are known to be concentrated are alined along many of the lineaments or occur at lineament intersections, suggesting that the zones of weakness reflected by the lineaments provided felicitous pathways for upward movement of mineralizing agents. Other lineaments bound areas of high mineral concentration suggesting that some crustal blocks have had a tectonic history more favorable for mineralization than others. These conclusions suggest that the study of space image lineaments can provide new and fruitful approaches to the search for concealed mineral deposits.</p><p>In Alaska, some lineaments coincide in part with active fault traces and some separate areas of significantly different structure and geologic history. However, the movements along the zones of weakness which these lineaments are believed to reflect have been too slow and spread over too many millions of years for the lineaments to be considered as marking zones of present earthquake hazard.</p><p>Detailed discussion of the lineaments, and of interpretations as to their meaning, are contained in: 1) a paper presented by Lathram and Raynolds at the First William T. The model was used to predict the dissolved-oxygen concentrations in the Duwamish River estuary when the Renton Treatment Plant sewage-effluent discharge is increased to its proposed maximum of 223 cubic feet per second. The computed monthly average dissolved-oxygen concentrations in the estuary decreased by a maximum of 2 milligrams per liter when compared with computations for the summer of 1971, when the effluent discharge averaged 37 cubic feet per second. The increase in effluent discharge is not expected to cause large changes in phytoplankton concentrations in the estuary. As defined by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, an elutriate is the supernatant resulting from the vigorous 30-minute shaking of one part bottom sediment from the dredging site with four parts water (vol/vol) collected from the dredging site followed by one hour settling time and appropriate centrifugation and a 0.45-micron filtration. The elutriate studies were initiated to evaluate possible environmental effects of proposed dredging activities in selected reaches of Louisiana waterways. The waterways investigated were the Mississippi River-Gulf Outlet, Breton Sound, Mississippi River downstream from Baton Rouge, Bayou Long, Intracoastal Waterway (east and west of the Harvey Canal), Three Rivers area, Ouachita River, Barataria Bay, Houma Navigation Canal, Atchafalaya Bay (Ship Channel), Berwick Bay, Intracoastal Waterway (Port Allen to Morgan City), Petite Anse area, and Calcasieu River and Ship Channel. The Geological Survey collected 227 samples of native water and bed (bottom) material from 130 different sites. These samples (as well as elutriates prepared from mixtures of native water and bed material) were analyzed for selected metal, pesticide, nutrient, and organic constituents. An additional 116 bed samples collected at 58 sites were analyzed for selected pesticides; and 4 additional native-water samples from 2 sites were analyzed for selected metal pesticide, nutrient, and organic constituents. No flooding occurred downstream from American Falls, Reservoir. The inundated areas and maximum water-surface elevations are shown in a series of 17 hydrologic atlases. The area covered by the atlases extends from Teton Dam downstream to American Falls Reservoir, a distance of 100 miles. The extent of flooding shown on the maps was obtained by field inspections and aerial photographs made during and immediately after the flood. There may be small isolated areas within the boundaries shown that were not flooded, but the identification of these sites was beyond the scope of the study. The elevation data shown are mean-sea-level elevations of high-water marks identified in the field. This particular map (in the 17-map series) shows conditions in the Parker quadrangle. The basins range in size from 0.17 to 64 square miles (0.44 to 166 square kilometers) and are distributed throughout the State. Model parameters were determined by calibration with observed data from each site. Average error of peak discharge simulation was about 36 percent. Techniques used in screening data for calibration as well as those used to optimize parameter values are discussed. A scheme developed to assess the relative accuracy of the frequency curves based on observed and simulated data indicated that the simulated data are equivalent to nine years of observed data in defining 2-year floods, and fifteen years in defining 100-year floods. Discharges corresponding to the best estimate of flows for selected recurrence intervals are tabulated for each modeled basin. The basins ranged in size from 1.58 to 64.0 square miles and ranged in extent of manmade impervious cover from 3 to 37 percent. The flood-frequency characteristics were defined by weighting frequency curves based on simulated discharges with those based on observed discharges. The average record length of the three rain gages used in simulation was 72 years, and the average record length of observed discharges was 11 years. Discharges corresponding to 2-, 5-, 10-, 25-, 50-, 100-year floods from the modeled basins were compared with discharges from regional equations for estimating peak discharge rates from rural basins. Basin lag times of the urban basins were compared with those of nearby rural basins. The analyses indicated that in a fully-developed residential area, the flood peaks and the basin lag times will not be significantly different from those expected from an undeveloped area. Data were not sufficient to determine if an increase in flood peaks would occur from extremely small basins with extremely intensive development. Preimpoundment water-quality data were collected on the Raystown Branch and six tributary st.reams in the basin. Specific conductance values varied inversely with water discharge. The pH values were extremely low only at the Shoup Run site. Dissolved oxygen concentrations observed at all sites indicated a relatively high oxygen saturation level throughout the year. Seasonal variations in nitrate-N and orthophosphate-P levels were measured at the main inflow station at Saxton, Pa. The highest concentrations of nitrate-N and orthophosphate-P occurred in the winter and spring months and the lowest concentrations were measured dur:l.ng the swnmer and fall. Bacteriological data indicated no excessive -amounts of fecal matter present at the inflows. Soil samples collected at four sites in the impoundment area were predominantly of the Barbour, Philo, and Basher series, which are considered to be highly fertile soils with silt-loam and sandy~loam textures.
