Upon the completion of the Tehama-Colusa Canal, it is expected that most of the service area will switch from passive forms of agriculture (dry farming and grazing) to intensive irrigated farming. Importation and application of surface water may affect the chemical quality of native ground water. This study documents the chemical quality of native ground water before large-scale importation and application of surface water provide the potential of altering the ground-water chemistry. Analyses of samples from 222 wells show that most of the area is underlain by ground water of a quality suitable for most agricultural and domestic uses. In the vicinities of College City-Arbuckle and the city of Williams, boron, chloride, sodium, and dissolved solids may be a threat to future agricultural activities where boron- or chloride-sensitive crops would be grown. The source of degraded ground water in the two areas is local intermittent streams that drain areas having numerous saline springs and seeps. Since ground water is the only source of water for irrigation in the Albin area, 34 irrigation wells have been drilled since 1968 and developed in conjunction mostly with center-pivot sprinkler systems that in 1974 irrigated about 6,980 acres. Most irrigation wells are developed in channel deposits of the Ogallala Formation of late Miocene. Water levels in parts of these channel deposits have declined about 4 to 7 feet since pumping began in 1968. In the La Grange area, lands are irrigated by surface water, ground water or a combination of both. The best producing wells are those completed in both the Brule Formation of Oligocene age and the alluvium. Secondary porosity was located and elevated in the Brule using caliper logs, an Acoustic Borehole Televiewer and geophysical logs. From the spring of 1970 to the spring of 1974, hydrographs of wells in parts of the La Grange area show water-level rises of about 5 feet resulting from the net effect of surface-water recharge and groundwater pumpage. Throughout the La Grange area no significant annual water-table declines have occurred. It is unlikely that irrigation wells pumping near Horse Creek have caused significant direct streamflow depletion.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri76118","usgsCitation":"Borchert, W.B., 1976, Geohydrology of the Albin and La Grange areas, aoutheastern Wyoming: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 76-118, Report: v, 72 p.; 6 Plates: 33.00 x 27.25 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/wri76118.","productDescription":"Report: v, 72 p.; 6 Plates: 33.00 x 27.25 inches or smaller","costCenters":[{"id":5050,"text":"WY-MT Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":411732,"rank":9,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_35026.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":55066,"rank":8,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1976/0118/plate-6.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":55065,"rank":7,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1976/0118/plate-5.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":55062,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1976/0118/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":55061,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1976/0118/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":55067,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1976/0118/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":118958,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1976/0118/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":55063,"rank":5,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1976/0118/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":55064,"rank":6,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1976/0118/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Wyoming","otherGeospatial":"Albin and La Grande areas","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -104.482,\n 41.565\n ],\n [\n -104.482,\n 41.317\n ],\n [\n -104.057,\n 41.317\n ],\n [\n -104.057,\n 41.565\n ],\n [\n -104.482,\n 41.565\n ]\n ]\n ],\n \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b1be4b07f02db6a89dd","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Borchert, W. At Panoche Hills in central California, an area formerly used by motorcycles together with an adjacent unused area were monitored from 1971 to 1975. Observations in both areas included measurements of precipitation, runoff, soil moisture, soil bulk density, plant cover, and erosion surveys. At Dove Spring Canyon in southern California erosion was measured on a site that is currently being used for motorcycle hill-climbing. At the Panoche Hills site, the area used by motorcycles produced about eight times as much runoff as the unused area. Similarly, sediment yield from the used areas was 857 cubic meters/sq km, while the quantity of sediment from the unused area was not measurable by standard methods. At the Dove Spring Canyon site, which is still being used for hill-climbing, erosion surveys show that degradation in trails has been as much as 0.3 m in the period 1973-75. Compaction of soils and reduction of permeability appears to be the most serious hydrologic impact of motorcycle use at Panoche Hills. Increased bulk density of soils reduces depth of moisture penetration which deprives plants of moisture needed for growth. Reported yields of public supply and industrial wells range from 50 to 510 gallons per minute (3 to 32 litres per second) and the median yield is 130 gallons per minute (8 litres per second). Most of these wells are 200 to 400 feet (61 to 122 metres) deep. The median yield of all public supply and industrial wells over 300 feet (91 metres) deep and 8 inches (203 millimetres) or larger in diameter is 230 gallons per minute (15 litres per second). Crystalline rocks of Precambrian age are the major source of ground water for domestic use in the northwestern two-thirds of Passaic County. Reported well yields range from 1 to 200 gallons per minute (.06 to 13 litres per second). The median reported yield of domestic wells is 5 gallons per minute (.31 litres per second) and that of public supply wells is 30 gallons per minute (2 litres per second).

Other consolidated rocks--rocks of Paleozoic age and the Watchung Basalt of Traissic age--are utilized primarily for domestic water supplies in Passaic County. Reported yields of wells tapping the Paleozoic rocks range from less than 1 to 35 gallons per minute (.06 to 2 litres per second) and the median yield is 10 gallons per minute (.63 litres per second). Reported yields of domestic wells tapping the Watchung Basalt range from less than 1 to 40 gallons per minute (.06 to 3 litres per second) and the median yield is 12 gallons per minute (.76 litres per second). However, reported yields of nine industrial and commercial wells range from 50 to 180 gallons per minute (3 to 11 litres per second).

Unconsolidated stratified deposits of Quaternary age are locally an important source of ground water for public supply and industrial use in parts of Passaic County. These deposits have not been extensively explored but are potentially an important source of ground water for future development. Reported yields of wells tapping the stratified deposits range from 4 to 920 gallons per minute (.25 to 58 litres per second). The median reported yield of domestic wells is 16 gallons per minute (1 litre per second) and that of public supply and industrial wells is 130 gallons per minute (8 litres per second. Depths of wells depend upon the thickness of the deposits. Reported depths range from 22 to 170 feet (7 to 52 metres).

The quality of ground water in Passaic County varies from one aquifer to another. Water from the Precambrian rocks is soft to moderately hard (34 to 104 milligrams per litre) and is low in dissolved solids (66 to 159 milligrams per litre). Water from the Brunswick Formation is moderately hard to very hard (89 to 540 milligrams per litre). The dissolved solids content ranges from 129 to 563 milligrams per litre). The occurrence of more highly mineralized water at depth in the Brunswick Formation is indicated by an analysis, made in 1885, of 16,000 milligrams per litre of dissolved solids at a depth of 2,050 feet (625 metres) in a well in Paterson. Water from two wells tapping the Quaternary deposits is moderately hard (65 and 83 milligrams per litre) and has dissolved solids contents of 122 and 133 milligrams per litre).

Water use from both surface and ground-water supplies in Passaic County averaged about 106 million gallons per day (4.6 cubic metres per second) in 1965. Ground water probably accounts for 5 to 10 percent of this total. Ground-water pumpage by the major public supply companies in the county has increased from 2.1 million gallons per day (.09 cubic metres per second) in 1951 to 4.39 million gallons per day (.19 cubic metres per second) in 1968. About 80 percent of the 4.39 million gallons per day (.19 cubic metres per second) was from wells tapping the Brunswick Formation in the southern part of the county.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Trenton, NJ","doi":"10.3133/wri7675","usgsCitation":"Carswell, L., and Rooney, J., 1976, Summary of geology Ground-water potential is limited because of the small size of the aquifers and susceptibility to seawater intrusion. Of the 30 million gallons per day about half is being used. Two water-bearing zones are present: an artesian aquifer, composed of the San Sebastian Formation and the lower Cibao Formation that yields an average of 244 gallons per minute to wells; and, a water-table aquifer composed of the upper Cibao Formation and the Aguada and Aymamon Limestones that yields an average of 515 gallons per minute to wells. Ground water is less mineralized inland and in the artesian aquifer. Mean concentrations of dissolved solids are 363 milligrams per liter for the artesian aquifer and 525 milligrams per liter for the water-table aquifer. This growth has resulted in an increased demand for information for additional domestic, industrial, and municipal water supplies. A knowledge of the occurrence of ground water will permit a more efficient allocation of the resource. Aquifers in central La Plata County include: alluvium, Animas Formation of Quaternary and Tertiary age, Fruitland Formation, Pictured Cliffs Sandstone, three formations of the Mesa Verde Group, the Mancos Shale, Dakota Sandstone, Morrison Formation of Cretaceous and Jurassic age, and undifferentiated formations. Well yields generally are low, usually less than 25 gallons per minute. However, higher yields, 25 to 50 gallons per minute may be found locally in aquifers in the alluvium and the Animas Formation. The quality of water from the aquifers is dependent on rock type. Most of the water is a calcium bicarbonate type. However, aquifers that are predominantly fine-grained or contain interbeds of shale may contain sodium bicarbonate type water. The dissolution of minerals in the coal beds, which are present in the Mesa Verde Group and the Dakota Sandstone, can contribute high concentrations of iron, sulfate, and chloride to ground water. The aquifer comprises the Meridian Sand Member of the Tallahatta Formation and discontinuous hydraulically connected sand beds in the upper part of the Wilcox Group. The aggregate sand thickness of the aquifer ranges from less than 50 ft to about 500 ft. The withdrawal of fresh water from the aquifer in Mississippi in 1975 was about 32 Mgal/d. Long-term water-level trends indicate an average decline of about 1 ft per year. Thick, permeable sand beds yield as much as 2,800 gal/min to wells and fresh water extends to depths of more than 2,000 ft. The aquifer is used extensively in areas where the dissolved-solids content exceeds 500 mg/liter; however, the most common problems in water supplies are excessive iron and corrosiveness. The techniques can be used at ungaged sites as well as sites where insufficient data are available to make a reliable estimate. Streams have been divided intp two types--major and minor. Major streams are the Susquehanna, West Branch Susquehanna, Juniata, and Chemung Rivers. Points on these streams with drainage areas of more than 2,000 mi 2 (5,180 km 2 ) are included in this category. Points on these streams with drainage areas of less than 2,000 mi 2 fall into the minor stream category. Generally minor streams are herein defined as those draining less than 2,000 mi 2 (5,180 km 2 ). Multiple -regression techniques have been used to develop relations for estimating the 1-, 3-, 7-, 30-, and 183-day duration low flows at recurrence intervals of 10, 20, SO and 100 years for annual series data and the 1 - , 3-, 7-, and 30-day duration low flows, at the same recurrence intervals, for six individual months, May through October, inclusive.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri7651","usgsCitation":"Armbruster, J.T., 1976, Technical manual for estimating low-flow frequency characteristics of streams in the Susquehanna River basin: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 76-51, 71 p. :ill., map (fold. in pocket) ;26 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri7651.","productDescription":"71 p. :ill., map (fold. in pocket) ;26 cm.","costCenters":[{"id":532,"text":"Pennsylvania Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":157928,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":267199,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1976/0051/report.pdf"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a08e4b07f02db5fa31f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Armbruster, Jeffrey T.","contributorId":37707,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Armbruster","given":"Jeffrey","email":"","middleInitial":"T.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":195559,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Bedrock in the Hackensack River basin, consisting of the Newark Group of Triassic age, is composed of diabase dikes and sills and gently westward dipping sandstone, conglomerate, and shale. The Brunswick Formation of the Newark Group is the only important bedrock aquifer in the basin. Water occurs in this aquifer in joints and fractures. The zone of most abundant and largest water-bearing joints and fractures occurs generally within 200 feet of land surface in lowland areas of major streams and within 400 to 500 feet of land surface in upland areas. Reported yields of industrial and public-supply wells tapping the Brunswick are as much as 600 gpm (gallons per minute): the median yield is 100 gpm. The formation is anisotropic; the greatest permeability and thus the movement of water in response to pumping are parallel to the strike of bedding. Therefore, wells in well fields alined perpendicular to strike have minimum interference. The Newark Group is overlain by unconsolidated deposits of till, varved silt and clay, alluvium, and sand and gravel of Quaternary age. Sand and gravel aquifers consist of (1) deltaic deposits formed at the mouths of streams that entered ancient Lake Hackensack in the western part of the basin and (2) valley-fill deposits along the eastern side of the basin. These aquifers locally yield large quantities of water (greater than 300 gpm) to wells. The chemical quality of water in the Brunswick Formation is generally good, and the water is relatively low in dissolved mineral matter in the upper area of the Hackensack River basin. In the lower area of the basin, water in the Brunswick is highly mineralized: specific conductance ranges from 579 to 3,480 micromhos per centimeter at 25 °C; chloride content ranges from 19 to 755 mg/L (milligrams per liter); and sufate content ranges from 87 to 966 mg/L. Chemical quality in both the Brunswick Formation and the unconsolidated deposits in the lower area is affected by induced recharge of poor quality surface water from the Hackensack River and Newark Bay. Water quality in these surface water bodies is influenced by tidal flooding and by the disposal of an average of 57 mgd (million gallons per day) of sewage and industrial wastes in the Hackensack Meadows. Future development of ground-water supplies in the upper area of the basin is restricted, because such development would decrease surface-water supplies which are almost entirely utilized for water supply. Additional development of ground water in the lower area of the basin is limited by the small amount of ground water in the basin and by the intrusion of highly mineralized surface water into the aquifers.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Trenton, NJ","doi":"10.3133/wri7674","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, Division of Water Resources","usgsCitation":"Carswell, L., 1976, Appraisal of water resources in the Hackensack River basin, New Jersey: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 76-74, vi, 68 p.; 2 Maps: 19 x 27 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/wri7674.","productDescription":"vi, 68 p.; 2 Maps: 19 x 27 inches","numberOfPages":"74","onlineOnly":"Y","additionalOnlineFiles":"Y","costCenters":[{"id":470,"text":"New Jersey Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":157841,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/wri_76_74.gif"},{"id":261956,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1976/74/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":261959,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1976/74/pdf/Figure3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":261957,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1976/74/pdf/wrir76-74.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":261958,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1976/74/pdf/Figure2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"New Jersey","otherGeospatial":"Hackensack River Basin","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -74.16666666666667,40.583333333333336 ], [ -74.16666666666667,41.083333333333336 ], [ -73.83333333333333,41.083333333333336 ], [ -73.83333333333333,40.583333333333336 ], [ -74.16666666666667,40.583333333333336 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac6e4b07f02db67a2f9","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Carswell, L.D.","contributorId":6435,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Carswell","given":"L.D.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":196510,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
