This report presents both field and laboratory data pertaining to the physical, chemical, and biological effects of waste injection into the subsurface at this particular site, a case history of the operation, predictions of the reactions between certain organic wastes and the aquifer components, and descriptions of the effects of these reactions on the subsurface movement of the wastes.\r\n\r\nThe case history documents a situation in which subsurface waste injection could not be considered a successful means of waste disposal. The first injection well was used only for 1 year due to excessive wellhead pressure build-up above the specified pressure limit of 150 pounds per square inch (10.3 bars). A second injection well drilled as a replacement operated for only 5 months before it too began to have problems with plugging. Upward leakage of waste into shallower aquifers was also detected at several wells in the injection-observation well system. The multiple problems of plugging, high pressures, and waste leakage suggested that the reactive nature of the waste with the aquifer into which it was injected was the primary reason for the difficulties experienced with waste injection.\r\n\r\nA site study was initiated in June 1971 to investigate waste-aquifer interactions. The first stage of the study determined the hydrogeologic conditions at the site, and characterized the industrial waste and the native ground water found in the injection zone and other aquifers. The injection zone consisted of multiple permeable zones ranging in depth from about 850 to 1,000 feet (259 to 305 metres) below land surface. In addition to the injection zone, aquifers were found near depths of 60, 300, 500, and 700 feet (18, 91, 152, and 213 metres) below land surface. The aquifers from 300 feet (91 metres) down to the injection zone were flowing artesian with the natural pressure of the injection zone being 65 feet (20 metres) above land surface at the site.\r\n\r\nThe dissolved solids concentration in the native ground water increased with depth to an average value of 20,800 mg/l (milligram per litre) (two-thirds that of seawater) in the water from the injection zone. Sodium chloride was the major dissolved solid, and all of the ground water below 300-feet (91-metres) depth was slightly alkaline.\r\n\r\nDissolved organic carbon of the industrial waste averaged 7,100 mg/l and 95 percent of the organic carbon was identified and quantified. The major organic waste constituents in order of decreasing abundance were acetic acid, formic acid, p-toluic acid, formaldehyde, methanol, terephthalic acid, phthalic acid, and benzoic acid. Prior to injection, the waste was neutralized with lime to pH 4 so that the major inorganic waste constituent was calcium at a concentration of 1,300 mg/l.\r\n\r\nThe second stage of the site study involved the observation of waste-aquifer interactions at various wells as the waste arrived and passed by the wells. Water samples obtained from three observation wells located 1,500 to 2,000 feet (457 to 607 metres) from the original injection well gave evidence for biochemical waste transformations at low waste concentrations. Gas that effervesced from these water samples contained up to 54 percent methane by volume. Ferrous iron concentrations as high as 35 mg/l, hydrogen sulfide gas, and sulfide precipitates were additional indicators of biochemical reductive processes in the subsurface environment. Approximately 3,000 organisms per millilitre were found in uncontaminated ground water from the injection zone whereas in waste-contaminated wells, the number increased to levels as high as 1,000,000 organisms per millilitre. High concentrations of waste were found to be toxic to microo","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Govt. Print. Beginning in 1927, the placers were worked for 7 years by small-scale mining methods; in later years dragline excavators and a dredge were utilized. These deposits are important, not only because they are of high grade but because they are the only commercial source of platinum metals in the United States.

The bedded rocks of this area are sedimentary and volcanic rocks of late Paleozoic(?) age that have been intruded by a variety of ultrabasic rocks. The platinum metals of the placers have been derived from a mass of dunite and related rocks that constitute the bedrock of Red Mountain in the upper valley of the Salmon River. The western headwater tributaries of this stream are the fluvial conduits that have produced all the placers in the valley of the river.

The principal placers lie in two pay streaks, one in the valley floor of the Salmon River and the other in an ancient stream channel along the east side of this valley. The stream-channel deposit, called the bench pay streak, was formed in early Pleistocene time; its alluvial materials consist largely of clay derived from an ancient moraine believed to be of Nebraskan age. The valley-floor deposit, called the pay streak of the valley floor, consists of alluvial materials of fluvial and glaciofluvial origin whose ages range from Yarmouth to Holocene. Both channels contain high-grade placers that have yielded a large volume of platinum metals.

The platinum metals of these deposits are contained mainly in two alloys intergrown in a pseudoeutectic fabric. The major alloy is mainly platinum, with a small amount of iridium, still smaller amounts of rhodium and palladium, and probably some osmium and ruthenium. The minor alloy is dominantly iridium and osmium with less platinum and still less ruthenium and rhodium. The compositions of these two alloys are somewhat variable but tend to approach constant mean values. A small amount of free gold is recovered with the platinum metals. In addition to these two alloys, minute amounts of five platinum minerals have been identified. The weighted mean percentages of platinum, iridium, osmium, ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, and gold, as mined from 1936 to 1972, are respectively 82.25, 11.32, 2.15, 0.17, 1.30, 0.38, and 2.43.

The lodes from which these placers have been derived are, or have been, localized in the Red Mountain ridge, where the principal rocks are dunite and serpentinite. No lodes have been recognized, either because the platinum metals are sparsely distributed or because a large part of the platiniferous rock has been eroded. It is known, however, that the amounts of iridium, osmium, and ruthenium, or of osmiridium, decrease from south to north. Other generalizations regarding the composition and granularity of these metals have been deduced. The size and shape of the platinum lodes may have ranged from diffuse disseminations to high-grade concentrations in small loci. Under certain assumptions, the tenor of platinum metals in the dunite can be roughly approximated. Utilizing two totally different methods of computation, the mean tenor has been estimated to lie between 0.19 and 0.27 grain of platinum metals per cubic yard of dunite, or 0.014 to 0.023 gram per stere. No large low-grade deposits of commercial value are likely to be found, but it is possible that some small high-grade concentrations occur.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/pp938","usgsCitation":"Mertie, J.B., 1976, Platinum deposits of the Goodnews Bay district, Alaska: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 938, iv, 42 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/pp938.","productDescription":"iv, 42 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":486535,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_5112.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":418479,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0938/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":140358,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0938/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Goodnews Bay","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -162.94921875,\n              59.84481485969105\n            ],\n            [\n              -161.8505859375,\n              59.84481485969105\n            ],\n            [\n              -161.8505859375,\n              60.413852350464914\n            ],\n            [\n              -162.94921875,\n              60.413852350464914\n            ],\n            [\n              -162.94921875,\n              59.84481485969105\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ad9e4b07f02db684f72","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Mertie, John Beaver Jr.","contributorId":91093,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mertie","given":"John","suffix":"Jr.","email":"","middleInitial":"Beaver","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":152192,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The basins range in size from 0.17 to 64 square miles (0.44 to 166 square kilometers) and are distributed throughout the State. Model parameters were determined by calibration with observed data from each site. Average error of peak discharge simulation was about 36 percent. Techniques used in screening data for calibration as well as those used to optimize parameter values are discussed. A scheme developed to assess the relative accuracy of the frequency curves based on observed and simulated data indicated that the simulated data are equivalent to nine years of observed data in defining 2-year floods, and fifteen years in defining 100-year floods. The stream supports few species of aquatic life from Blossburg to its confluence with Crooked Creek. Alkaline water of tributaries Mill Creek, Crooked Creek, and the Cowanesque River counteract the acidity carried downstream from Blossburg, and the water quality of the Tioga River gradually improves, supporting a more diversified population of fish and aquatic life.
\n
All of the streams in the Tioga River basin carry nutrients sufficient for algae blooms. Dissolved solids range from very high to moderately high throughout the basin. The Tioga River has high concentrations of sulfate and heavy metals, particularly iron and manganese. Dissolved oxygen was usually above 80 percent saturation and never dropped below 7.0 milligrams per litre throughout the basin.
\n
Relationships between selected water-quality parameters have been developed for the sampling stations throughout the basin. Downstream trends were also examined. The relationships will be further refined and implemented in predictive water-quality models as more data are collected.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri7666","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Baltimore District, and the Susquehanna River Basin Commission","usgsCitation":"Ward, J.R., 1976, Preliminary results of preimpoundment water-quality studies in the Tioga River Basin, Pennsylvania and New York: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 76-66, v, 79 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri7666.","productDescription":"v, 79 p.","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":532,"text":"Pennsylvania Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":159739,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/wri7666.jpg"},{"id":318881,"rank":1,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1976/0066/report.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"New York, Pennsylvania","otherGeospatial":"Tioga River Basin","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -77.61428833007812,\n              41.65598416994607\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.61428833007812,\n              42.05745022024682\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.92558288574219,\n              42.05745022024682\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.92558288574219,\n              41.65598416994607\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.61428833007812,\n              41.65598416994607\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aade4b07f02db66b27b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Ward, Janice R.","contributorId":79930,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ward","given":"Janice","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":203148,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

In the north, the area joins the Pulga and Bucks Lake quadrangles studied previously. Tectonically, this area is situated in the southern part of an arcuate segment of the Nevadan orogenic belt in the northwestern Sierra Nevada. The oldest rocks are metamorphosed calcalkaline island-arc-type andesite, dacite, and sodarhyolite with interbedded tuff layers (the Franklin Canyon Formation), all probably correlative with Devonian rocks in the Klamath Mountains. Younger rocks form a sequence of volcanic, volcaniclastic, and sedimentary rocks including some limestone (The Horseshoe Bend Formation), probably Permian in age. All the volcanic and sedimentary rocks were folded and recrystallized to the greenschist facies during the Nevadan (Jurassic) orogeny and were invaded by monzotonalitic magmas shortly thereafter. A second lineation and metamorphism to the epidote-amphibolite facies developed in a narrow zone around the plutons.

In light of the concept of plate tectonics, it is suggested that the early (Devonian?) island-arc-type andesite, dacite, and sodarhyolite (the Franklin Canyon Formation) were derived from the mantle above a Benioff zone by partial melting of peridotite in hydrous conditions. The water was probably derived from an oceanic plate descending to the mantle. Later (Permian?) magmas were mainly basaltic; some discontinuous layers of potassium-rich rhyolite indicate a change into anhydrous conditions and a deeper level of magma generation. The plutonic magmas that invaded the metamorphic rocks at the end of the Jurassic may contain material from the mantle, the subducted oceanic lithosphere, and the downfolded metamorphic rocks. The ratio of partial melts from these three sources may have changed with time, giving rise to the diversity in composition of magmas.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Printing Office","doi":"10.3133/pp920","usgsCitation":"Hietanen, A.M., 1976, Metamorphism and plutonism around the middle and south forks of the Feather River, California: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 920, Report: iii, 30 p.; Plate: 40.23 x 26.77 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/pp920.","productDescription":"Report: iii, 30 p.; Plate: 40.23 x 26.77 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":104752,"rank":700,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_5108.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"},"description":"5108"},{"id":32985,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0920/plate-1.pdf","text":"Plate 1","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"Plate 1"},{"id":121761,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0920/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":32986,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0920/report.pdf","text":"Report","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"Report"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"Feather River","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -121.5,\n              39.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -121,\n              39.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -121,\n              40\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.5,\n              40\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.5,\n              39.5\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a4fe4b07f02db628810","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hietanen, Anna Martta","contributorId":85579,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hietanen","given":"Anna","email":"","middleInitial":"Martta","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":151992,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

A schedule has been established to implement new methods beginning October 1, 1976, and with the transition to be completed at all stations by October 1, 1977. The basins ranged in size from 1.58 to 64.0 square miles and ranged in extent of manmade impervious cover from 3 to 37 percent. The flood-frequency characteristics were defined by weighting frequency curves based on simulated discharges with those based on observed discharges. The average record length of the three rain gages used in simulation was 72 years, and the average record length of observed discharges was 11 years. Discharges corresponding to 2-, 5-, 10-, 25-, 50-, 100-year floods from the modeled basins were compared with discharges from regional equations for estimating peak discharge rates from rural basins. Basin lag times of the urban basins were compared with those of nearby rural basins. The analyses indicated that in a fully-developed residential area, the flood peaks and the basin lag times will not be significantly different from those expected from an undeveloped area. Data were not sufficient to determine if an increase in flood peaks would occur from extremely small basins with extremely intensive development.
