Hydrographs of 364 floods from 18 continuous-record gaging sites in the Colorado River basin in southern Utah were used to define a single relation of flood volume to peak discharge; the standard error of estimate of that relation . is 82 percent. Using the same data, a mean dimensionless hydrograph was pre-pared. Synthetic hydrographs may be derived for basins of 5 to 300 square miles (13 to 780 square kilometers) and flood peaks of 1 to 7,000 cubic feet per second
(0.03 to 200 cubic meters per second) using that mean dimensionless hydrograph. Design flood peaks may be estimated from other reports. A method is presented to estimate the reduction in culvert or bridge size resulting from use of storage above the structure. Reduction of structure capacity of 25 percent may be achieved by storing 4 percent of the total flood volume.

The investigation consisted of geochemical sampling, multielement chemical and spectrographic analyses, compilation of new and existing geochemical data, statistical evaluation of the total data set, and the generation of element distribution and abundance maps. The purpose of the survey was to define areas in the quadrangle that contain anomalous concentrations of metallic and nonmetallic elements. These studies are fundamental to a comprehensive evaluation of the mineral resource potential of the area and to assist in the discovery of additional economic mineral deposits.
The first-large scale geochemical sampling and analytical surveys were initiated in the McCarthy quadrangle in the early 1960's with the inception of the Wrangell Mountain project by the U.S. Geological Survey. Since that time, levels of activity in geochemical sampling in the quadrangle have fluctuated. Each year, many geochemical samples have been collected concomitantly with geologic mapping, and was culminated under the Alaskan Minerals Resource Assessment Program 1974.

During the investigations, about 5,200 tons of suspended-sediment were discharged from the basin. Of this amount, about 2,700 tons, or about half the total sediment discharge, as derived from the highway construction area. Annual suspended-sediment yields from 17.5 acres under construction ranged from 40,000 to 66,000 tons/sq mi in the 1972 and 1973 water years, respectively. In the 1972 and 1973 er years of active construction, 83 percent of the sediment transported from the construction site was eroded each year in storms from January to June. Seasonal trends in sediment discharge for 1972 show that 69 percent of that year 's suspended-load was transported in April, May, and June, whereas less than 1 percent was transported in July, August, and September. This inventory was designed to determine and document the use of the 87 earth-science information products prepared as a part of the San Francisco Bay Region Environment and Resources Planning Study (SFBRS). \r\n\r\nThe inventory showed that: (1) all eight counties had planning staffs who were very familiar with SFBRS products and had made frequent use of such products; (2) all eight counties had prepared planning documents which cite SFBRS products; (3) the types of planning applications most often indicated were: geologic hazards studies, seismic safety and public safety plan elements, general reference, and the preparation and review of environmental impact reports and statements; (4) over 90 percent of the 87 SFBRS products were used at least once, and nine of the products were used over 30 times each for various county planning activities; and (5) at least 85 other USGS products were also used for various county planning activities. \r\n\r\nAfter the inventory, selected county officials, employees, and consultants were interviewed and asked--among other things--to indicate any problems in the use of the SFBRS products, to suggest improvements, and to identify any needed or desired earth-science information. The responses showed that: (1) the scales commonly used for working maps were 1:62,500 or larger and for plan implementation were 1:24,000 or larger; (2) only one county had a geologist on its planning staff, although six others had the benefit of geotechnical services from private consulting firms, county engineering staffs, or the State Division of Mines and Geology; (3) seven of the eight counties expressed some problems in using the products, primarily because of their small scale or lack of detail; (4) all eight counties expected to continue to use the products and expressed a need or desire for additional earth-science, engineering, or other information; (5) all eight counties suggested specific improvements to future products, primarily larger scale or more detail and fewer technical or more interpretive products; and (6) all eight counties received educational, advisory, and review services from USGS personnel. Seventeen selected examples of the application of SFBRS products to various county planning activities are discussed and illustrated. These examples include four planning studies, seven plans, and two ordinances. Results of analyses of those programs and ancillary data are presented in : (1) A table (matrix) which has been designed for the notation and elaboration of information pertaining to the mined-area reclamation programs of the 50 States; (2) a primer on surface mining activities and related reclamation practices and problems; and (3) a listing of types of non-Federal governmental controls applicable to reclamation. Interpretations of the status and content of State programs suggest that although a common thread runs through State statutory language, administrative requirements vary from State to State in order to meet different natural, economic, social, and political considerations. A general trend is seen in State programs toward the requiring of an integration of landuse planning and mine planning, with increased local governmental involvement.
