This aquifer commonly yields 500 to 1,000 gallons per minute (32 to 63 litres per second) and may yield as much as 2,500 gallons per minute (158 litres per second). Based on an estimated average storage coefficient of 0.1, the quantity of water stored in the Ogallala aquifer was computed at approximately 50 million acre-feet (6.17 x 101° cubic metres). Local overdevelopment of this water resource has resulted in water-level declines of more than 40 feet (12 metres) from 1966 to 1972 in some areas of concentrated well development. The amount of ground water in storage has been reduced about 2 percent during this period.

Aquifer tests indicate that transmissivity ranges from 500 to 11,800 feet squared per day (46 to 1,100 metres squared per day), the storage coefficient ranges from 0.002 to 0.11, and hydraulic conductivity ranges from 2.1 to 55 feet per day (0.6 to 16.8 metres per day). In addition to these tests, 802 specific-capacity tests were used to extend transmissivity data.

Recharge to the Ogallala aquifer is primarily from precipitation and may be as much as 1 inch (25 millimetres) per year in areas where catchment and percolation are most favorable. Discharge is primarily from pumping and a small amount of natural discharge.

Aquifers of limited importance are the Dakota Sandstone and the Cheyenne Sandstone Member of the Purgatoire Formation which provide water to irrigation wells in the southwestern part of Cimarron County. Irrigation wells generally are completed jointly in these aquifers and yields of 300 to 500 gallons per minute (19 to 32 litres per second) are common. About 45 miles (72 kilometers) of profile were made on the Caloosahatchee River Estuary and San Carlos Bay. Two different acoustic energy sources, a high resolution boomer and a 45-electrode high resolution sparker, both having a power input of 300 joules, were used to obtain both adequate penetration and good resolution. The seismic profiles show that much of the strata of middle Miocene to Holocene age apparently are extensively folded but not faulted. Initial interpretations indicate that: (1) the top of the Hawthorn Formation (which contains the upper Hawthorn aquifer) has much relief due chiefly to apparent folding; (2) the limestone, sandstone, and unconsolidated sand and phosphorite, which together compose the sandstone aquifer, appear to be discontinuous; (3) the green clay unit of the Tamiami Formation contains large scale angular beds dipping eastward; and (4) numerous deeply cut alluvium-filled paleochannels underlie the Caloosahatchee River. Use of this method requires a field measurement of channel width. Development of the basin-characteristics method showed drainage-area size to be the most significant basin feature for estimating streamflow. Wells in the water-table aquifer yield generally less than 50 gpm and dissolved solids concentration is less than 500 mg/liter except in coastal areas and the peninsula southwest of the Myakka River estuary. Wells in the Venice area that tap zone 1 usually yield less than 30 gmp. The quality of water is good except in the peninsula area. Zone 2 is the most highly developed aquifer in the heavily populated coastal areas. Wells yield as much as 200 gpm. In most areas, water is of acceptable quality. Wells that tap zone 3 yield as much as 500 gmp. Fluoride concentration ranges from 1 to 3.5 mg/liter. Zone 4 yields as much as 1,500 gpm to large diameter wells. Except in the extreme northeastern part of the area water from zone 4 usually contains high concentrations of fluoride and sulfate. Zone 5 is the most productive aquifer in the area, but dissolved solids concentrations usually are too high for public supply except in the extreme northeast. Surface water derived from natural drainage is of good quality except for occasional high color in summer. Most of the streams in the Myakka River basin area have small drainage basins, are of short channel length, and do not yield high volumes of flow. During the dry season, streamflow is maintained by groundwater discharge, and, as a result, chloride, sulfate, and dissolved solids concentrations and the hardness of the water are above drinking water standards for some streams. This 1:62,500 photointerpretative map shows the distribution of ten common types of fluvial and mass-movement erosional landforms in the drainage basin of Redwood Creek in 1947 and 1974. The mapped landforms include slides, slumps, large compound earthflows, debris avalanches, unstable streambanks and adjacent hillslopes, small mass-movement features, questionable or inactive landslides, deeply incised amphitheater shaped drainage basins, small actively eroding water courses, and actively eroding main channel stream banks. The map legend describes these landforms and the techniques used in preparing the map. The amount and diversity of erosional activity increased greatly between 1947 and 1974. This increased activity apparently reflects major floods in 1953, 1955, 1964, and 1972, as well as the start of large scale, tractor-yarded clearcut timber harvest in the basin. In general, pumpage has increased at an irregular rate since the completion of the first well to this aquifer in 1886. These withdrawals are responsible for an almost continuous decline of water levels in wells throughout the Memphis area. Water-level data indicate that over the years a broad, regional cone of depression has developed in the potentiometric surface of the Memphis Sand and is centered near downtown Memphis. Areally smaller, subsidiary cones are superimposed upon this regional cone in areas heavily pumped by municipal and industrial wells. Pumpage from the Memphis Sand in Shelby County, Tenn., was 188 Mgal/d (million gallons per day) or 712 Ml/d (million litres per day) in 1975, although a maximum of 190 Mgal/d (719 Ml/d) was reached in 1974.
\n
Pumpage from the Fort Pillow Sand (\"1,400-foot\" sand) began in 1924 and increased at a yearly rate of about 0.6 Mgal/d (2.3 Ml/d) until 1942. From 1943 to 1962, pumpage averaged about 11.5 Mgal/d (43.5 Ml/d), then was reduced as MLGW (Memphis Light, Gas and Water Division) discontinued wells that became unserviceable. MLGW ceased pumping from the aquifer in 1974, and pumpage from the remaining industrial wells in Shelby County in 1975 was 4.4 Mgal/d (16.6 Ml/d). Water levels in the Fort Pillow Sand generally have risen since 1963. Water l evels in the aquifers in the Memphis area fluctuate inversely with changes in pumping. Analysis of observation-well and pumpage data indicates that local water levels can be altered by changing the pumping rates or by varying the areal distribution of pumping.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri7667","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the City of Memphis, Memphis Light,  Gas and Water Division","usgsCitation":"Criner, J.H., and Parks, W.S., 1976, Historic water-level changes and pumpage from the principal aquifers of the Memphis area, Tennessee: 1886-1975: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 76-67, iv, 45 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri7667.","productDescription":"iv, 45 p.","numberOfPages":"54","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","temporalStart":"1886-01-01","temporalEnd":"1975-01-01","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":157812,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/wri7667.jpg"},{"id":313231,"rank":1,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1976/0067/report.pdf","text":"Report","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"Report"}],"country":"United States","state":"Tennessee","city":"Memphis","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -90.42984008789062,\n              34.89268966339912\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.42984008789062,\n              35.62046556900037\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.1046142578125,\n              35.62046556900037\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.1046142578125,\n              34.89268966339912\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.42984008789062,\n              34.89268966339912\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae1e4b07f02db6885c5","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Criner, James H.","contributorId":107258,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Criner","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":196841,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Parks, William Scott","contributorId":52148,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Parks","given":"William","email":"","middleInitial":"Scott","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":196840,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The Lower Rio Bermejo is in many ways atypical, as its channel narrows downstream. Also its flow decreases downstream even though average annual rainfall at its mouth is twice that at its head (1,200 mm vs. 600 mm) and its suspended-sediment at El Yacare was about 41 million metric tonnes per year during 1970-73 and 82 million metric tonnes per year at El Colorado. The Rio Pilcomayo ' Superior ' disappears near Laguna Escalante, owing to plugging of its channel by sediment, into a network of shallow lakes and marshes. Another stream known as the Rio Pilcomayo ' Inferior ' appears about 160 km to the southeast and meanders downstream to the Rio Paraguay. The Rio Pilcomayo ' Superior ' carries about 100 million metric tonnes of sediment per year. The average annual concentration of sediment is more than 6 kg per cubic meter of flow.
