The sedimentary textures resulting from depositional processes operating in lower energy environments appear to have influenced uranium mineralization. The Chinle consists of three fining-upward, fluvial-lacustrine sequences. Uranium mineralization is concentrated in the lower part of the lowest sequence in areas where sediments of lower energy environments are complexly interbedded with sediments of other environments. Areas favorable for uranium exploration exist in the subsurface to the north, west, and south of the Chinle outcrop in the Swell. This determination is based on the spatial distribution of depositional environments and the pattern of Chinle deposition through time.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr76283","usgsCitation":"Lupe, R., 1976, Depositional environments as a guide to uranium mineralization in the Chinle Formation, San Rafael Swell, Utah: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 76-283, ii, 19 leaves :ill., maps ;27 cm.; (18 p. - PGS), https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr76283.","productDescription":"ii, 19 leaves :ill., maps ;27 cm.; (18 p. - PGS)","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":148677,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0283/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":43520,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0283/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ab1e4b07f02db66e8df","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lupe, Robert","contributorId":38130,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lupe","given":"Robert","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":169945,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Geochemical exploration for this type of disseminated deposit depends upon recognizing the significance of this volatile suite and interpreting it in light of other geologic and geophysical data. One way of estimating the significance of the volatile suite is to determine enrichment factors. The enrichment factor is defined as abundance divided by crustal abundance or abundance divided by the local Clarke. Enrichment factors for the volatile suite in specific areas of the Edna Mountain quadrangle, Humboldt County, Nevada, interpreted with other geologic and geophysical factors, indicate that a potential for disseminated gold mineralization exists. Periodic water temperature observations, which were made at a frequency of approximately once per month during the past 15 years, were analyzed with the aid of a computer program to describe the annual water temperature cycle at sites in the Commonwealth. Shown on a map of Kentucky, at each site of water-temperature collections, are maximum median monthly temperature, minimum median monthly temperature, and annual average temperature. Stream temperatures in Kentucky vary between 0 and 30 degrees Celsius (deg C) during the year. Maximum median monthly water temperatures occur in July and are typically between 23 and 27 deg C, whereas minimum median monthly water temperatures are recorded in January and are useually within the 2 to 6 deg C range. Preimpoundment water-quality data were collected on the Raystown Branch and six tributary st.reams in the basin. Specific conductance values varied inversely with water discharge. The pH values were extremely low only at the Shoup Run site. Dissolved oxygen concentrations observed at all sites indicated a relatively high oxygen saturation level throughout the year. Seasonal variations in nitrate-N and orthophosphate-P levels were measured at the main inflow station at Saxton, Pa. The highest concentrations of nitrate-N and orthophosphate-P occurred in the winter and spring months and the lowest concentrations were measured dur:l.ng the swnmer and fall. Bacteriological data indicated no excessive -amounts of fecal matter present at the inflows. Soil samples collected at four sites in the impoundment area were predominantly of the Barbour, Philo, and Basher series, which are considered to be highly fertile soils with silt-loam and sandy~loam textures. Morphological features of the lake basin and low nutrient levels at the inflows should prevent excessive weed growth around the lake perimeter.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri7657","usgsCitation":"Williams, D.R., 1976, Preimpoundment water quality of Raystown Branch Juniata River and six tributary streams, south-central Pennsylvania: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 76-57, iv, 23 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri7657.","productDescription":"iv, 23 p.","numberOfPages":"30","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":532,"text":"Pennsylvania Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":310267,"rank":1,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1976/0057/report.pdf","text":"Report","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":160092,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/wri7657.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Pennsylvania","otherGeospatial":"Raystown Branch Juniata River","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -78.651123046875,\n              39.95501708352986\n            ],\n            [\n              -78.66622924804688,\n              40.02340800226773\n            ],\n            [\n              -78.60855102539062,\n              40.0833252155441\n            ],\n            [\n              -78.54537963867188,\n              40.168380093142446\n            ],\n            [\n              -78.47946166992188,\n              40.273239279173055\n            ],\n            [\n              -78.41766357421875,\n              40.373751366720505\n            ],\n            [\n              -78.37646484375,\n              40.41349604970198\n            ],\n            [\n              -78.34625244140625,\n              40.41140480914068\n            ],\n            [\n              -78.33526611328125,\n              40.371658891506094\n            ],\n            [\n              -78.32290649414062,\n              40.35387022893512\n            ],\n            [\n              -78.24462890625,\n              40.38002840251183\n            ],\n            [\n              -78.20068359374999,\n              40.42813291388417\n            ],\n            [\n              -78.1182861328125,\n              40.46784549077257\n            ],\n            [\n              -78.046875,\n              40.46471114051202\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.98095703125,\n              40.43545015171254\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.96585083007812,\n              40.40722213305287\n            ],\n            [\n              -78.079833984375,\n              40.319325896602095\n            ],\n            [\n              -78.1292724609375,\n              40.25542466812209\n            ],\n            [\n              -78.15261840820312,\n              40.214538129296336\n            ],\n            [\n              -78.13888549804686,\n              40.15998434802335\n            ],\n            [\n              -78.11141967773438,\n              40.11693985890127\n            ],\n            [\n              -78.14437866210938,\n              40.056001090767424\n            ],\n            [\n              -78.20755004882812,\n              39.96870074491696\n            ],\n            [\n              -78.26248168945312,\n              39.930800820752765\n            ],\n            [\n              -78.35861206054688,\n              39.928694653732364\n            ],\n            [\n              -78.46847534179688,\n              39.94975340768179\n            ],\n            [\n              -78.5577392578125,\n              39.95396438076642\n            ],\n            [\n              -78.651123046875,\n              39.95501708352986\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4acce4b07f02db67e769","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Williams, Donald R.","contributorId":72825,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Williams","given":"Donald","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":203371,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

This report presents both field and laboratory data pertaining to the physical, chemical, and biological effects of waste injection into the subsurface at this particular site, a case history of the operation, predictions of the reactions between certain organic wastes and the aquifer components, and descriptions of the effects of these reactions on the subsurface movement of the wastes.\r\n\r\nThe case history documents a situation in which subsurface waste injection could not be considered a successful means of waste disposal. The first injection well was used only for 1 year due to excessive wellhead pressure build-up above the specified pressure limit of 150 pounds per square inch (10.3 bars). A second injection well drilled as a replacement operated for only 5 months before it too began to have problems with plugging. Upward leakage of waste into shallower aquifers was also detected at several wells in the injection-observation well system. The multiple problems of plugging, high pressures, and waste leakage suggested that the reactive nature of the waste with the aquifer into which it was injected was the primary reason for the difficulties experienced with waste injection.\r\n\r\nA site study was initiated in June 1971 to investigate waste-aquifer interactions. The first stage of the study determined the hydrogeologic conditions at the site, and characterized the industrial waste and the native ground water found in the injection zone and other aquifers. The injection zone consisted of multiple permeable zones ranging in depth from about 850 to 1,000 feet (259 to 305 metres) below land surface. In addition to the injection zone, aquifers were found near depths of 60, 300, 500, and 700 feet (18, 91, 152, and 213 metres) below land surface. The aquifers from 300 feet (91 metres) down to the injection zone were flowing artesian with the natural pressure of the injection zone being 65 feet (20 metres) above land surface at the site.\r\n\r\nThe dissolved solids concentration in the native ground water increased with depth to an average value of 20,800 mg/l (milligram per litre) (two-thirds that of seawater) in the water from the injection zone. Sodium chloride was the major dissolved solid, and all of the ground water below 300-feet (91-metres) depth was slightly alkaline.\r\n\r\nDissolved organic carbon of the industrial waste averaged 7,100 mg/l and 95 percent of the organic carbon was identified and quantified. The major organic waste constituents in order of decreasing abundance were acetic acid, formic acid, p-toluic acid, formaldehyde, methanol, terephthalic acid, phthalic acid, and benzoic acid. Prior to injection, the waste was neutralized with lime to pH 4 so that the major inorganic waste constituent was calcium at a concentration of 1,300 mg/l.\r\n\r\nThe second stage of the site study involved the observation of waste-aquifer interactions at various wells as the waste arrived and passed by the wells. Water samples obtained from three observation wells located 1,500 to 2,000 feet (457 to 607 metres) from the original injection well gave evidence for biochemical waste transformations at low waste concentrations. Gas that effervesced from these water samples contained up to 54 percent methane by volume. Ferrous iron concentrations as high as 35 mg/l, hydrogen sulfide gas, and sulfide precipitates were additional indicators of biochemical reductive processes in the subsurface environment. Approximately 3,000 organisms per millilitre were found in uncontaminated ground water from the injection zone whereas in waste-contaminated wells, the number increased to levels as high as 1,000,000 organisms per millilitre. High concentrations of waste were found to be toxic to microo","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Govt. Print. A network of observation wells has been established near the sites, and data have been collected from the wells and from nearby streams. Ground-water mounds have built up under the lagoons as percolation of effluents occurred. Percolating effluents mix with ground water and form plumes of ground water that contain chemical constituents for the effluents. Each plume tends to move down the hydraulic gradient in a direction generally perpendicular to the water-level contours. Water-level contours and most likely areas of movement of the plumes are shown on maps. Tests using rhodamine WT dye and dissolved solids as tracers suggested that chemical constituents in the plumes travel at different velocities as a result of dispersion and adsorlption. Chemical constituents from effluent percolating from the Old Faithful lagoons probably discharge into nearby Iron Spring Creek. Constituents from lagoons at the other three sites studied probably have not reached nearby streams or lakes. A schedule has been established to implement new methods beginning October 1, 1976, and with the transition to be completed at all stations by October 1, 1977.
