The purposes of the survey were to define: (1) areas of sediment accumulation and erosion; (2) the thickness of Holocene sediments; (3) the internal structure of the near-surface sediments; (4) the types of bottom topography; and (5) the general geologic framework of the tidal river and estuary.</p><p>The survey utilized a variety of acoustic systems. Bottom data were obtained by using a Raytheon _<sup>1</sup>/ model DE-719 fathometer (200 kHz) and an EDO Western model 606 sidescan-sonar system (100 kHz). Subbottom data were collected with a 7-kHz Raytheon model PTR-106 system and a small airgun system (170-645 Hz band pass; l in<sup>3</sup> chamber). An EDO Western sidescan fish (model 604-150) coupled with a 2.5-kHz seismic-reflection system also was used during the longitudinal run up the river. The totals for the ,various kinds of data collected were 481 line kilometers each of fathometer, sidescan sonar, 7-kHz, and airgun records, and 246 line kilometers of 2.5-kHz records. Positional control for all tracklines was provided by frequent radar fixes, by dead reckoning, and by sightings on buoys, landmarks, and other navigational aids.</p><p>The quality of the acoustic records varied with location in the river. Good fathometer and sidescan-sonar records were collected along all tracklines. However, because of the nature of the sediments within some sections of the river, the degree of subbottom penetration in many places was limited. In general, the subbottom penetration and resolution were poor in the upper and middle reaches of the river, whereas the subbottom records from the lower reach usually were quite good.</p><p>The original records may be examined at the U.S. Geological Survey, Woods Hole, MA 02543. Microfilm copies of the data are available for purchase from the National Geophysical and Solar-Terrestrial Data Center (NGSDC), Boulder, CO 80303.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr81174","usgsCitation":"Knebel, H.J., 1981, Seismic-reflection and sidescan-sonar data collected on the Potomac River, Maryland and Virginia, during May 1979: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 81-174, 6 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr81174.","productDescription":"6 p.","numberOfPages":"6","temporalStart":"1979-05-14","temporalEnd":"1979-05-30","costCenters":[{"id":680,"text":"Woods Hole Science Center","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":171374,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":293113,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1981/0174/ofr1981174.pdf","text":"Report","size":"217 KB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"OFR 1981-174"}],"country":"United States","state":"Maryl;Virginia","otherGeospatial":"Potomac River","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -77.399,37.8907 ], [ -77.399,39.0 ], [ -76.2379,39.0 ], [ -76.2379,37.8907 ], [ -77.399,37.8907 ] ] ] } } ] }","contact":"<p><a href=\"https://woodshole.er.usgs.gov/\" data-mce-href=\"https://woodshole.er.usgs.gov/\">Coastal and Marine Geology Program</a><br> U.S. Geological Survey<br> 384 Woods Hole Road<br> Woods Hole, MA 02543</p>","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac9e4b07f02db67c3ad","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Knebel, Harley J.","contributorId":25930,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Knebel","given":"Harley","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":237993,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Interpretation of the geophysical data collected indicated that depth to bedrock below the valley floor varies between about 350 and 450 feet. Two, and perhaps three, major unconsolidated sedimentary layers are inferred to overlie bedrock, although other significant layers may not have been recognizable. No prior subsurface data were available in this area. A resistivity sounding was made also at a site about 7 miles downstream to explore for a buried bedrock channel. The data here indicated that the bedrock surface is about 50 feet above sea level. Hence, the hypothesis of a buried ancient outlet valley of Eagle River at this location gained more credence. The U.S. Geological Survey has completed a 3-year assessment of the Yampa River basin, Colorado and Wyoming, where increased coal-resource development has begun to affect the environment and quality of life. \r\n\r\nEconomic projections of the overall effects of coal-resource development were used to estimate water use and the types and amounts of waste residuals that need to be assimilated into the environment. Based in part upon these projections, several physical-based models and other semiquantitative assessment methods were used to determine possible effects upon the basin's water resources. \r\n\r\nDepending on the magnitude of mining and use of coal resources in the basin, an estimated 0.7 to 2.7 million tons (0.6 to 2.4 million metric tons) of waste residuals may be discharged annually into the environment by coal-resource development and associated economic activities. If the assumed development of coal resources in the basin occurs, annual consumptive use of water, which was approximately 142,000 acre-feet (175 million cubic meters) during 1975, may almost double by 1990. In a related analysis of alternative cooling systems for coal-conversion facilities, four to five times as much water may be used consumptively in a wet-tower, cooling-pond recycling system as in once-through cooling. An equivalent amount of coal transported by slurry pipeline would require about one-third the water used consumptively by once-through cooling for in-basin conversion. \r\n\r\nCurrent conditions and a variety of possible changes in the water resources of the basin resulting from coal-resource development were assessed. Basin population may increase by as much as threefold between 1975 and 1990. Volumes of wastes requiring treatment will increase accordingly. Potential problems associated with ammonia-nitrogen concentrations in the Yampa River downstream from Steamboat Springs were evaluated using a waste-load assimilative-capacity model. Changes in sediment loads carried by streams due to increased coal mining and construction of roads and buildings may be apparent only locally; projected increases in sediment loads relative to historic loads from the basin are estimated to be 2 to 7 percent. \r\n\r\nSolid-waste residuals generated by coal-conversion processes and disposed of into old mine pits may cause widely dispersed ground-water contamination, based on simulation-modeling results. Projected increases in year-round water use will probably result in the construction of several proposed reservoirs. Current seasonal patterns of streamflow and of dissolvedsolids concentrations in streamflow will be altered appreciably by these reservoirs. Decreases in time-weighted mean-annual dissolved-solids concentrations of as much as 34 percent are anticipated, based upon model simulations of several configurations of proposed reservoirs. Detailed statistical analyses of water-quality conditions in the Yampa River basin were made. Regionalized maximum waterquality concentrations were estimated for possible comparison with future conditions. Using Landsat imagery and aerial photographs, potential remote-sensing applications were evaluated to monitor land-use changes and to assess both snow cover and turbidity levels in streams. The technical information provided by the several studies of the Yampa River basin assessment should be useful to regional planners and resource managers in evaluating the possible impacts of development on the basin's water resources.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/cir839","usgsCitation":"Steele, T.D., and Hillier, D.E., 1981, Assessment of impacts of proposed coal-resource and related economic development on water resources, Yampa River basin, Colorado and Wyoming: A summary: U.S. Geological Survey Circular 839, vi, 56 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/cir839.","productDescription":"vi, 56 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":410819,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_23574.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":31352,"rank":1,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1981/0839/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":124487,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1981/0839/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Colorado, Wyoming","otherGeospatial":"Yampa River basin","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -106.6,\n              41.611\n            ],\n            [\n              -109,\n              41.611\n            ],\n            [\n              -109,\n              40\n            ],\n            [\n              -106.6,\n              40\n            ],\n            [\n              -106.6,\n              41.611\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4abae4b07f02db671f7e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Steele, Timothy Doak","contributorId":88723,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Steele","given":"Timothy","email":"","middleInitial":"Doak","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":148525,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Hillier, Donald E.","contributorId":105282,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hillier","given":"Donald","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":148526,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

As a result, the volcanic ash fell some 50 miles to the south in the Bull Run watershed, the principal water-supply source for the metropolitan area of Portland, Oreg. Water samples collected from three stream sites within the watershed were compared with samples collected during the same season in previous years. No detectable changes were noted in chemical characteristics. Precipitation samples collected immediately after the June 12-13 ash fall ranged in specific conductance from 20 to 41 micromhos per centimeter at 25C and in pH from 4.0 to 4.3 pH units. Stream samples collected during the May-June period ranged in specific conductance from 18 to 28 micromhos per centimeter at 25C and in pH from 6.7 to 7.5 pH units. Volcanic-ash samples were collected and analyzed for particle size, chemical composition, and weight. Significant differences in particle size of ash were found in samples from two separate eruptions. This report presents results of three electric-field ratio telluric traverses conducted as part of the Bureau of Land Management Wilderness Program in the Big Maria Mountains, Riverside County, Calif. The telluric traverses were run on the southwest side of the Big Maria Mountains in an attempt to define the location of major buried faults near the eroded front of the range.</p><p>E-field ratio tellurics is a descriptive name applied to the electrical exploration technique used in this survey. The telluric method refers to the measurement of the earth's electric field generated by induction from natural electromagnetic waves arriving at the surface. The E-field ratio telluric method uses a receiving array of three electrodes spaced equidistant and inline. This array is, in effect, two colinear dipoles sharing a common electrode. The potential difference across each dipole is then proportional to the component of the telluric field in the direction of the array. This configuration permits the measurement of the ratio of the telluric field at each dipole in the direction of the dipole line, and hence the name. The traverse data is extended by moving the three-electrode array forward one dipole length so that the forward electrode becomes the center electrode for the next ratio measurement.</p><p>Electric-field data so obtained are proportional to the square root of the apparent resistivity of the earth at the location of the dipoles. However, because the apparent resistivity can be a function of the dipole direction, it is important to know the orientation of the dipoles with respect to major structures. Because the resistivity of fluid-saturated earth materials is largely dependent on the porosity of the rocks, the salinity of the pore fluid, and the presence of clays or similar material where surface conduction is high, alluvial fill, argillite and similar rocks tend to have low resistivities whereas igneous or high-grade metamorphic rocks have high resistivities. Variation in the electrical properties along a traverse may then be used to infer lithologic or structural changes.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr81961","usgsCitation":"Hoover, D.B., Broker, M.M., and Stambaugh, T., 1981, E-field ratio telluric survey near the Big Maria Mountains, Riverside County, California: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 81-961, 15 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr81961.","productDescription":"15 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":389296,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1981/0961/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":141806,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1981/0961/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","county":"Riverside County","otherGeospatial":"Big Maria Mountains","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -114.98016357421875,\n              33.543683878655926\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.26742553710936,\n              33.543683878655926\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.26742553710936,\n              34.023071367612125\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.98016357421875,\n              34.023071367612125\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.98016357421875,\n              33.543683878655926\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a58e4b07f02db62f545","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hoover, Donald B.","contributorId":89877,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hoover","given":"Donald","email":"","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":159901,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Broker, Michael M.","contributorId":6058,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Broker","given":"Michael","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":159902,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Stambaugh, T.","contributorId":6448,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Stambaugh","given":"T.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":159900,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}
