Estimates of flood characteristics with recurrence intervals up to 100 years can be obtained at most sites in Nebraska by use of techniques presented in this report. Instructions, equations, and graphs are presented to aid the design engineer in estimating the magnitude and frequency of floods.
\nFor natural-flow streams, the estimating equations and graphical solutions are based on regional relations between floods of a specific return period and selected basin characteristics. Nebraska was subdivided into five hydrologic regions by means of regressions and residuals from the regressions. The boundaries of Regions 1 and 2 were determined to a great extent by differences in soil type. The divisions between Region 2 and Region 4 were also determined by differences in soil type. Boundaries of Region 3 and Region 5 are along or near basin divides.
\nFlood magnitude and frequency solution diagrams are presented for major controlled streams such as the North Platte, South Platte, Platte, and Republican Rivers. Flood information on small controlled streams is limited to available station data.
\nFlood characteristics are tabulated for 303 gaging stations having 13 or more years of record. These flood characteristics provide the best information on floods at these gaged sites.
\nObserved maximum flood peaks at 303 gaging stations with 13 or more years of record and significant peaks at 57 short-term stations and 31 miscellaneous sites are useful in designing flood-control works for maximum safety from flood damage. Comparison is made with maximum observed floods in the United States.

Stream discharges ranged from 0.3 to 37.0 cubic feet per second, most discharges being less than 10 cubic feet per second. Data also were collected for evaluation of the energy-dissipation model. The escape coefficient of 0.090 per foot at 25 degrees Celsius may be used for small streams similar to those studied. (Woodward-USGS).

sedimentary units, northern Gulf of Alaska","docAbstract":"Faults and submarine slides or slumps of Quaternary age are potential environmental hazards on the outer continental shelf (OCS) of the northern Gulf of Alaska. Most of the faults that approach or reach the seafloor cut strata that may be equivalent to the upper Yakataga Formation (Pliocene-Pleistocene). Along several faults the seafloor is offset from 5 to 20 m. A few faults appear to cut Holocene sediments, but none of these show offset at the seafloor.
Submarine slides or slumps have been found in two places in the OCS region: (1) seaward of the Malaspina Glacier and Icy Bay, an affected area of 1,770 km2 with a slope of less than one-half degree, and (2) across the entire span of the Copper River prodelta, an area of 1,730 km2, having a slope of about one-half degree. Seismic profiles across these slide areas show disrupted reflectors and irregular topography commonly associated with submarine slides or slumps. Potential slide or slump areas have been delineated in areas of thick sediment accumulation and relatively steep slopes. These areas include (1) Kayak Trough, (2) parts of Hinchinbrook Entrance and Sea Valley, (3) parts of the outer shelf and upper slope between Kayak Island and Yakutat Bay and (4) Bering Trough.

Creek and its major tributaries contain water of good to excellent quality. The waters were found to be free of excessive quantities of dissolved nutrients, oxidizable matter, and fecal coliform bacteria.
\nBenthic macroinvertebrate collections tended to support he water chemistry and fish population studies. Diversity (d) and redundancy (r) ranged from 2.44 to 3.46 and 0.14 to 0.38, respectively. Such diversity and redundancy values indicate a healthy environment at all stations.

Our oral presentation was preceded by one given by Jeffrey Daniels and James Scott entitled \"Borehole Investigations of South Texas Uranium Deposits.\" Statements made in their presentation that are pertinent to this report are as follows: (1) a Tertiary sandstone is the host for the South Texas uranium occurrence, (2) the roll-front geometry is similar to those found in Wyoming, and (3) the roll-front does not occur at a visually obvious change from reduced to oxidized environments. A careful comparison of the IP (induced polarization) borehole logs and lithology revealed the following general points: (1) the largest IP response logged in the boreholes occurred at the uranium roll-front, and (2) the IP response can be correlated with percentage pyrite and with variations in the percentage and type of clay present.
The IP measurements reported here were made with a time-domain Huntec IP receiver. The transmitted wave-form had a two-second on-and-off period. Four windows were measured during the off-time. The second window, M2, which is given here, has a window duration of 130 milliseconds from 50 to 130 milliseconds. IP coupling is inferred not to be a serious problem in the survey data reported here, because the variations in M measurements are the same as those seen for the2 window of longest delay and length.
The data presented herein are part of a broad data set which the U.S. Geological Survey has gathered on surface geophysical methods.
