Water is under confined conditions in the central 3,300 square miles. Transmissivity is less than 1,000 feet squared per day. Storage coefficient is less than 0.0004 in the confined part of the aquifer and at least 0.1 in the unconfined part. Recharge is about 13,000 acre-feet per year, and storage at equilibrium, which was before 1965, was at least 180 million acre-feet. Ground-water withdrawals were less than 400 acre-feet per year before 1970 and increased to 5,300 acre-feet per year 1976-1979. By 1980, municipal-supply pumpage is expected to exceed that for a coal-slurry pipeline. Water levels have declined throughout the confined part of the aquifer. Decline of more than 100 feet was calculated for an area of 200 square miles through 1979 and was projected for 440 square miles through 2001. In the unconfined part, project declines averaged less than 1 foot. If pumping for coal slurry stopped, most of the decline would recover within 10 years. The study consisted of coordinated geological, geochemical, and mineral resource studies with the objective of evaluating the potential for mineral deposits in the 200 km area. The geochemical survey consisted of the collection of stream-sediment samples, stream-sediment samples taken for panning to produce heavy-mineral concentrates, and rock and water samples. The samples were analyzed by both wet chemical and semiquantita-tive emission spectrographic techniques. The sampling procedures, and methods of sample preparation and analysis were reported by Hinkle and others (1981).</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Unoxidized siliceous \"black shale\" from drill hole NGA 7 is strongly enriched in Cd, Mo, Sb, Se, V, and Zn, and also contains relatively high concentrations of As, Ba, Cu, Ni, and Tl compared with nonmetalliferous shales. Analyses of 103 samples plotted against depth in drill holes NGA, NG31, and NGA7, and selected XRD data, show the following: </p><p> 1. Groups of elements with distinct distribution patterns define most of major mineralogic components of the rocks. The \"normal shale\" component, which includes several detrital and authigenic phases, is indicated by covariations among Ti, Al, Fe, Na, Mg, K, B, Be, Co, Cr, Ga, La, Sc, Sr, and Zr. The shale component is diluted by varying amounts of the following minerals (and associated elements): silica (Si); dolomite (Mg, Ca, Mn, Sr); apatite (Ca, Be, Cr, La, Sr, Y); barite (Ba, Sr); sphalerite (Zn, Cd, Fe?); smithsonite (Cd, Co, Mn, Ni, Zn); bianchite (Cd, Ni, Zn) ; and bokite (V). Pyrite, gypsum, and jarosite were also identified.</p><p>2. The highly siliceous kerogenous metalliferous Gibellini facies is underlain by argillaceous and (or) dolomitic rocks. The transition zone deduced from the chemical data is not well defined in all instances, but probably represents the bottom of the black shale deposit. </p><p>3. Oxidation has reached to variable depths up to at least 150 ft, and has caused profound changes in the distributions of the enriched metals. Molybdenum, Se, and V have been partially removed from the upper parts of the sections and are concentrated near or slightly above the base of the Gibellini facies. In the Gulf of Mexico, State jurisdiction extends for 3 leagues (9 nautical miles or 16.68 km) off the coast of Texas and the western coast of Florida and for 3 geographical (nautical) miles (5.56 km) from the coastlines of Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi. The Gulf of Mexico OCS, which comprises the submerged lands of the Continental Shelf seaward of the Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas State boundaries, is under Federal jurisdiction. Activities occurring offshore must be supplied and supported from land, and the onshore activities required may have significant effects on the communities in which they occur. For example, oil and gas production might involve the expansion of existing transportation and processing facilities and the construction of new ones, and it might trigger an influx of workers and change employment patterns. These are not mirror-sweep scanning devices such as the multispectral scanner (MSS) sensors that have also been carried aboard the Landsat satellites. The vidicons operate more like common television cameras, using an electron gun to read images from a photoconductive faceplate.</p><p>In the case of Landsats 1 and 2, the RBV system consisted of three such vidicons which collected remote sensing data in three distinct spectral bands. Landsat 3, however, utilizes just two vidicon cameras, both of which sense data in a single broad band. The Landsat 3 RBV system additionally has a unique configuration. As arranged, the two cameras can be shuttered alternately, twice each, in the same time it takes for one MSS scene to be acquired. This shuttering sequence results in four RBV \"subscenes\" for every MSS scene acquired, similar to the four quadrants of a square. See Figure 1. </p><p>Each subscene represents a ground area of approximately 98 by 98 km. The subscenes are designated A, B, C, and D, for the northwest, northeast, southwest, and southeast quarters of the full scene, respectively. RBV data products are normally ordered, reproduced, and sold on a subscene basis and are in general referred to in this way. </p><p>Each exposure from the RBV camera system presents an image which is 98 km on a side. When these analog video data are subsequently converted to digital form, the picture element, or pixel, that results is 19 m on a side with an effective resolution element of 30 m. This pixel size is substantially smaller than that obtainable in MSS images (the MSS has an effective resolution element of 73.4 m), and, when RBV images are compared to equivalent MSS images, better resolution in the RBV data is clearly evident. It is for this reason that the RBV system can be a valuable tool for remote sensing of earth resources.</p><p>Until recently, RBV imagery was processed directly from wideband video tape data onto 70-mm film. This changed in September 1980 when digital production of RBV data at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) began. The wideband video tape data are now subjected to analog-to-digital preprocessing and corrected both radiometrically and geometrically to produce high-density digital tapes (HDT's). The HDT data are subsequently transmitted via satellite (Domsat) to the EROS Data Center (EDC) where they are used to generate 241-mm photographic images at a scale of 1:500,000.
