Determined during the study of selected stream reaches used for spawning and rearing by steelhead trout were (1) stream discharges that cover the greatest areas of the streambeds with water at both the depths and the velocities preferred by spawning steelhead; (2) discharges that cover selectively reduced streambed areas with water at both the depths and velocities preferred by spawning steelhead; (3) discharges that cover the greatest streambed areas with water at velocities preferred by spawning steelhead; (4) rearing discharges that cover the streambed, but not the banks of the channel, with water; and (5) average wetted perimeters of the channels at water stages corresponding to the rearing discharges. These discharges and wetted perimeters were determined by measurements at 54 study reaches on 18 streams representative in size and location of those used by steelhead for spawning and rearing.
Using multiple-regression techniques and the measured discharges and wetted perimeters, equations were developed for estimating the spawning and rearing discharges and the wetted perimeter for rearing at unmeasured stream sites. The independent parameters used were drainage area, mean altitude of the basin, reach altitude, reach slope, and average width of reach at toe of bank. Standard errors of estimate for the equations ranged from 26 to 50 percent for discharges corresponding to the greatest areas of preferred depths and velocities, from 32 to 46 percent for discharges corresponding to reduced areas of preferred depths and velocities, from 44 to 68 percent for discharges corresponding to the greatest areas of preferred velocities, from 46 to 57 percent for rearing discharges, and from 20 to 41 percent for the rearing wetted perimeter.

The Yakataga Formation, with an aggregate outcrop thickness of about 5,000 m, is characterized by variable amounts of distinctive neritic marine tillite-like diamictite and laminated siltstone containing dropstones interpreted as ice-rafted glacial debris. The lithology, sedimentary structures and molluscan fauna of the formation suggest that active tidal glaciers or an ice shelf were present along the landward margin of the basin possibly beginning in early or early middle Miocene time. Dropstone distribution in outcrop sections indicates that glaciers reached tidewater intermittently during the Miocene and were almost continuously present throughout the Pliocene and much of the Pleistocene. Paleomagnetic and nannoplankton dating of the upper 1,181 m of the Yakataga Formation at Middleton Island indicate that this part of the sequence probably was entirely deposited during the Matuyama reversed polarity epoch of the Pleistocene during which the sedimentation rate was of the order of 1 m/1,000 years.

A preliminary version was written in Sept., 1975.(von Huene and others, 1975) in support of the Call for Nominations, Proposed OCS Oil and Gas Lease Sale #46. Since that time, there has been a substantial increase in information as the result of a two-month examination of recent studies of the adjacent Gulf of Alaska Tertiary Province and a preliminary interpretation of some publicly available common depth point (CDP) seismic reflection data recently acquired by the U.S. Geological Survey. The main source of geologic and geophysical data used in the preparation of this summary is published and unpublished information of the U.S. Geological Survey (Plafker and others, 1975,Bruns and Plafker, 1975; Carlson, Bruns and Molnia, 1975; Carlson and Molnia, 1975; Core, Mattick, and Bayer, 1975; Molnia and Carlson, 1975 a & b; von Huene and others, 1975). Prior to 1975, data were gathered mainly for purposes other than for assessment of oil and gas resources and of the environmental consequences of exploration and development. A systematic survey for such an assessment is planned for the summer of 1976 and, therefore, this summary is tentative. Although the major problems and regional setting are discussed in this paper, a great deal more specific data and interpretations will begin to become available in about one year.
In this summary we consider the geology of a broad region on the continental shelf off the Kodiak group of islands and the Kenai Peninsula. We will concentrate on the area proposed for leasing in Sale #46. The area lies between about 56°N latitude and 60°N latitude (Fig. 1), and it measures approximately 660 km x 100 km. Water depths are generally less than 200 m.

These components are interrelated through the flow of energy and material. The ecosystem of south Florida has undergone extensive alteration for 70 years. About 35 percent (3 ,000 square miles) of the original habitat of the ecosystem has been replaced by agriculture or urbanization. The remaining natural habitat is stressed by exotic plants and animal, changes in water levels and flows, severe fires, pollution, loss of animal and plant populations, and by further growth and development. Man 's most dramatic and long-term effects on the ecosystem have resulted from drainage. Wetlands originally occupied about 75 percent of south Florida; through the years large areas of this land have been drained. In parts of southeast Florida, drainage has lowered water levels 5 to 6 feet below the 1900 level and stressed natural systems. western Powder Ridge Basin, Wyoming and Montana","docAbstract":"Preliminary results from the first part of a two-part investigation of the stability of highwalls in open-pit coal mines in the Fort Union Formation of the western Powder River Basin of Wyoming and Montana indicate that these highwalls are subject to time-dependent deformation. Field investigations and laboratory physical-properties tests of coal and overburden rocks suggest that several factors influence highwall stability. Some of these factors are rebound of overconsolidated rocks, desiccation, water, orientation and spacing of fractures, and strength and deformation properties. Factors of safety for a typical highwall in the study area (calculated by the finite-element method) may be less than 1.0 when open fractures are present and the highwall has degraded. Although it is concluded that most open-pit mines in the Fort Union Formation within the study area have generally stable highwalls, these highwalls do deteriorate and become progressively less stable. Because of this, postmining failures are common and could be critical if mining were delayed and then resumed after a period of several months. \r\n\r\nThe second part of the investigation will utilize field measurements of rock-mass properties and instrumentation of actively mined highwalls to obtain data for comparison with the results of the initial investigation.
