More than 50 percent of the water entering the Los Angeles-Owens River aqueduct flows through Lake Crowley. Arsenic enters Lake Crowley primarily from hot springs in Long Valley.

Sixty percent of the arsenic discharged to Lake Crowley is from hot springs in Hot Creek Gorge. The hot-spring water containing about 1,000 micrograms per litre of arsenic blends with the water flowing in the creek and is usually diluted to a concentration of about 200 micrograms per litre; additional dilution occurs downstream.

About 75 percent of the arsenic in Hot Creek is discharged from only two springs. The remaining sources of arsenic in the gorge are poorly defined seepage and flow from numerous small springs.

Other sources of arsenic in Long Valley are from either high volume and low-arsenic concentration springs, such as the springs at Hot Creek Fish Hatchery, or high-concentration and low-volume springs, such as those found in the vicinity of the Alkali lakes. Water discharge and total sediment discharge at these stations, representative of the 1943-72 period, were estimated from long-term flow data for nearby gaging stations and water-sediment discharge relations determined for the 1968-73 water years. Most of the total annual sediment discharge at each station occurs during a few days each year. The quantity of sediment transported in a single day often accounts for more than 40 percent of the total annual sediment discharge. Estimated sediment discharge for the upper Arroyo Grande and Santa Rita Creek basins during the 1943-72 water years averaged 53,000 tons and 23,000 tons per year. It also includes a summary of the major inorganic chemical data collected near Dos Rios, at South Fork, and at Scotia since the early 1950's. The recent reconnaissance involved data collection for nitrogen, phosphorus, total organic carbon, trace elements, and pesticide compounds in the river at Van Arsdale Dam, near Dos Rios, at Fort Seward, and at Scotia.

The number of samples collected during the special reconnaissance is somewhat limited, and therefore the data are only an estimate of conditions that presently exist at selected sites in the river. Results indicate that most of the constituents were low in concentration; although some variability was measured for some constituents. Sampling was designed so that samples collected at each site would represent a large range in discharge. Results indicate that discharge was not the singular factor controlling the concentration variance for most constituents. This aquifer commonly yields 500 to 1,000 gallons per minute (32 to 63 litres per second) and may yield as much as 2,500 gallons per minute (158 litres per second). Based on an estimated average storage coefficient of 0.1, the quantity of water stored in the Ogallala aquifer was computed at approximately 50 million acre-feet (6.17 x 101° cubic metres). Local overdevelopment of this water resource has resulted in water-level declines of more than 40 feet (12 metres) from 1966 to 1972 in some areas of concentrated well development. In addition to these tests, 802 specific-capacity tests were used to extend transmissivity data.

Recharge to the Ogallala aquifer is primarily from precipitation and may be as much as 1 inch (25 millimetres) per year in areas where catchment and percolation are most favorable. About 32 percent of the county is covered by lakes, swamps, and marshes. Water requirements in 1970 averaged about 54 million gallons per day. About 85 percent of the water was obtained from wells; about 15 percent from lakes. The Floridan aquifer supplies almost all the ground water used in Lake County. Annual recharge to the Floridan aquifer averages about 7 inches over the county; runoff average 8.5 inches. The quality of ground and surface water in Lake County is in general good enough for most uses; however, the poor quality of Floridan-aquifer water in the St. John River Valley probably results from the upward movement of saline water along a fault zone. Surface water in Lake County is usually less mineralized than ground water but is more turbid and colored. During the investigations, about 5,200 tons of suspended-sediment were discharged from the basin. Of this amount, about 2,700 tons, or about half the total sediment discharge, as derived from the highway construction area. Annual suspended-sediment yields from 17.5 acres under construction ranged from 40,000 to 66,000 tons/sq mi in the 1972 and 1973 water years, respectively. In the 1972 and 1973 er years of active construction, 83 percent of the sediment transported from the construction site was eroded each year in storms from January to June. Seasonal trends in sediment discharge for 1972 show that 69 percent of that year 's suspended-load was transported in April, May, and June, whereas less than 1 percent was transported in July, August, and September. In general, pumpage has increased at an irregular rate since the completion of the first well to this aquifer in 1886. These withdrawals are responsible for an almost continuous decline of water levels in wells throughout the Memphis area. Water-level data indicate that over the years a broad, regional cone of depression has developed in the potentiometric surface of the Memphis Sand and is centered near downtown Memphis. Areally smaller, subsidiary cones are superimposed upon this regional cone in areas heavily pumped by municipal and industrial wells. Pumpage from the Memphis Sand in Shelby County, Tenn., was 188 Mgal/d (million gallons per day) or 712 Ml/d (million litres per day) in 1975, although a maximum of 190 Mgal/d (719 Ml/d) was reached in 1974.
\n
Pumpage from the Fort Pillow Sand (\"1,400-foot\" sand) began in 1924 and increased at a yearly rate of about 0.6 Mgal/d (2.3 Ml/d) until 1942. From 1943 to 1962, pumpage averaged about 11.5 Mgal/d (43.5 Ml/d), then was reduced as MLGW (Memphis Light, Gas and Water Division) discontinued wells that became unserviceable. MLGW ceased pumping from the aquifer in 1974, and pumpage from the remaining industrial wells in Shelby County in 1975 was 4.4 Mgal/d (16.6 Ml/d). Water levels in the Fort Pillow Sand generally have risen since 1963. Water l evels in the aquifers in the Memphis area fluctuate inversely with changes in pumping. Analysis of observation-well and pumpage data indicates that local water levels can be altered by changing the pumping rates or by varying the areal distribution of pumping.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri7667","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the City of Memphis, Memphis Light,  Gas and Water Division","usgsCitation":"Criner, J.H., and Parks, W.S., 1976, Historic water-level changes and pumpage from the principal aquifers of the Memphis area, Tennessee: 1886-1975: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 76-67, iv, 45 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri7667.","productDescription":"iv, 45 p.","numberOfPages":"54","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","temporalStart":"1886-01-01","temporalEnd":"1975-01-01","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":157812,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/wri7667.jpg"},{"id":313231,"rank":1,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1976/0067/report.pdf","text":"Report","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"Report"}],"country":"United States","state":"Tennessee","city":"Memphis","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -90.42984008789062,\n              34.89268966339912\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.42984008789062,\n              35.62046556900037\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.1046142578125,\n              35.62046556900037\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.1046142578125,\n              34.89268966339912\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.42984008789062,\n              34.89268966339912\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae1e4b07f02db6885c5","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Criner, James H.","contributorId":107258,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Criner","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":196841,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Parks, William Scott","contributorId":52148,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Parks","given":"William","email":"","middleInitial":"Scott","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":196840,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
