Macroforms have dimensions commensurate with the width and depth of the channel and are emergent at all but the highest flow stages. The encroachment of vegetation on macroforms and their consequent stabilization since the large-scale development of irrigation in the Platte River basin is the major cause of the reduction in channel width upstream from Grand Island. From simple geometrical considerations of macroform shape, an equation is developed to predict the depth and duration of flow required to erode the stoss sides of the macroforms to remove new vegetal growth each year. The methods developed in this report to eliminate vegetal growth on macroforms may provide a useful management tool for controlling width of the Platte River channels. Although further testing is required to establish the validity of these methods at actual stream sites, a sample calculation for the Silver Creek reach shows good agreement between the flow conditions predicted by the methods developed in this report and actual flow conditions. S. Geological Survey and the Ministry of Development, Sultanate of Oman, during late 1973 and early 1974. The purpose of the investigation was to provide an evaluation of the mineral potential of northern Oman and produce recommendations leading toward the utilization of any viable mineral deposits that were found. The widespread copper deposits located within the Semail volcanics appear to be mineable, the iron-nickel laterites developed upon the weathered surface of the Semail ophiolite have economic potential. Manganese and chromite deposits investigated have only a marginal value and are not likely to be of economic importance in the near future. Discovery of economic copper and iron deposits warrants further geologic mapping and mineral exploration in northern Oman. The study area encompasses part of the Virgin Mountains and the Sullivans Canyon area. Precambrian metamorphic and igneous rocks are exposed in the core and are overlain by folded and faulted Paleozoic and Mesozoic quartzose and carbonate rocks. Mesozoic sedimentary rocks are overlain by Cenozoic volcanic and sedimentary units. The geochemical and mines and prospects survey indicates that the study area contains some mineral deposits that presently are not economically significant. Oil and gas has not been discovered in the area, and the resource potential is apparently nil or at best very low; any future oil and gas exploration would most likely be conducted outside the study area where favorable exploration localities exist. Other combustibles such as coal and oil shale are not known to occur in the study area. There is no evidence of geothermal activity or surficial radioactive mineralization.</p>\n<p>Several areas in the Paiute Instant Study Area are judged to have at best a low mineral potential. These include areas of copper, lead, manganese, molybdenum, nickel, silver, tungsten, and zinc mineralization, as well as occurrences of dumortierite, beryllium, arsenic, barium, gypsum, gem minerals, sand, gravel, and limestone. The metallic deposits and dumortieri te, beryllium, and arsenic occur over small surface areas. Significant production has not resulted from mining activity in mineralized areas. Sand, gravel, limestone, gem minerals, gypsum, and barium occurrences are far from major markets. The folded upper Tertiary subbottom was eroded during the first of five major Quaternary glacial advances over the inlet, and later fluvial, fluvioglacial, glacial, and marine erosional and depositional processes shaped the bottom to its present configuration.</p><p>Most of lower Cook Inlet has a relative smooth topography showing small local highs and lows, and slopes with gradients generally ranging from less than a degree to locally about 5°. Around the southwestern Kenai Peninsula and the Barren and Kodiak Islands, strong faulting with vertical movement has added to the complexity of bottom topography. Less complex, nonfaulted areas occur near Kalgin Island and south Kachemak Bay and around Augustine Island.</p><p>To facilitate description of lower Cook Inlet the estuarine body is divided into three large regions, northern and central, southern, and eastern; and these regions are divided into smaller physiographic areas on the basis of submarine topographic characteristics and 20-m depth zonations. Each area is named by combining the geographic name of a nearby place or feature on land with a common term for a marine physiographic feature -- trough, platform, ramp, slope, plateau. The purpose of the investigation was to provide geologic data so that the U.S. Forest Service and U.S. Geological Survey can jointly draft an Environmental Impact Statement. The location of the proposed road corridor is shown on Fig. 1. The general geologic conditions within the corridor are described and their anticipated impacts on the proposed road are discussed. The data and conclusions presented in this report are suitable for evaluating general impacts; however, additional detailed studies will be required for final design purposes.</p><p>The geologic conditions in the proposed road corridor were evaluated by reviewing published regional geologic maps, a field reconnaissance, and interpretation of aerial photographs. The largest scale geologic map available for the area is the 1:24,000, Geologic Map of the Bull Creek Quadrangle, Schroeder (1976). In early October, 1980, a field reconnaissance was made by Doug Stack and Ralph Mock of Chen and Associates, Inc. along the proposed road alignment. The knob is in the western part of the Blue Grass region. Hilltops in the rolling farmland adjacent to the knob are underlain by the nearly flat-lying Grant Lake and Callaway Creek Limestones of middle Late Ordovician age, and the valleys are cut in interbedded limestone and shale of the Clays Ferry Formation of late Middle and early Late Ordovician age. Precambrian basement is estimated to be 4,000 ft below the surface. The mapped area is 50 miles west of the crest of the Cincinnati arch; the regional dip is westward 16 ft per mile. The 38th parallel lineament is 50 miles to the south. The structure, about 14,000 ft in diameter, consists of a central area 6,300 ft in diameter of uplifted Clays Ferry Formation surrounded by a belt of annular faults that are divided into segments by radial faults. The grass structure of the Clays Ferry Formation is that of a broad dame, but same evidence indicates that, in detail, the beds are complexly folded. The limestone of the Clays Ferry is brecciated and infiltrated by limonite. The brecciation is confined to single beds, and there is no mixing of fragments from different beds. A small plug of the Logana Member of the Lexington Limestone (Middle Ordovician) has been upfaulted at least 700 ft and emplaced within the Clays Ferry. The central uplift is separated by high-angle and, in places, reverse faults from the belt of annular faulting. The concentric faults in the zone of annular faults are extensional, and the general aspect is of collapse and inward movement. Lenses of breccia are present along many of the concentric faults, but not along the radial faults. At least same of the breccia was injected from below. The youngest beds involved in the faulting are in the Bardstown Member of the Drakes Formation of late Late Ordovician age. The faulted and brecciated beds are overlain by nearly horizontal dolomite and shale of Early and Middle Silurian age. The basal 5 ft of the oldest Silurian unit, the Brassfield Formation, contains calcarenite and calcirudite composed, in large part, of locally derived fragments from the Upper Ordovician formations. The Jeptha Knob structure was formed in latest Late Ordovician or earliest Early Silurian time. At the time of formation, the area was either very slightly above or very slightly below sea level; the sediments were already largely indurated. At the onset of Silurian deposition, the area of the central uplift was probably a broad shallow depression not more than about 15 ft deep, possibly surrounded by a rim of Upper Ordovician rocks or rock fragments. The origin of the Jeptha Knob structure cannot be determined from the available data. Shatter cones and coesite, considered by many to be definitive criteria far origin by impact, have not been found.
