Preimpoundment water-quality data were collected on the Raystown Branch and six tributary st.reams in the basin. Specific conductance values varied inversely with water discharge. The pH values were extremely low only at the Shoup Run site. Dissolved oxygen concentrations observed at all sites indicated a relatively high oxygen saturation level throughout the year. Seasonal variations in nitrate-N and orthophosphate-P levels were measured at the main inflow station at Saxton, Pa. The highest concentrations of nitrate-N and orthophosphate-P occurred in the winter and spring months and the lowest concentrations were measured dur:l.ng the swnmer and fall. Bacteriological data indicated no excessive -amounts of fecal matter present at the inflows. Soil samples collected at four sites in the impoundment area were predominantly of the Barbour, Philo, and Basher series, which are considered to be highly fertile soils with silt-loam and sandy~loam textures. The basins ranged in size from 1.58 to 64.0 square miles and ranged in extent of manmade impervious cover from 3 to 37 percent. The flood-frequency characteristics were defined by weighting frequency curves based on simulated discharges with those based on observed discharges. The average record length of the three rain gages used in simulation was 72 years, and the average record length of observed discharges was 11 years. Discharges corresponding to 2-, 5-, 10-, 25-, 50-, 100-year floods from the modeled basins were compared with discharges from regional equations for estimating peak discharge rates from rural basins. Basin lag times of the urban basins were compared with those of nearby rural basins. The analyses indicated that in a fully-developed residential area, the flood peaks and the basin lag times will not be significantly different from those expected from an undeveloped area. Data were not sufficient to determine if an increase in flood peaks would occur from extremely small basins with extremely intensive development. The basins range in size from 0.17 to 64 square miles (0.44 to 166 square kilometers) and are distributed throughout the State. Model parameters were determined by calibration with observed data from each site. Average error of peak discharge simulation was about 36 percent. Techniques used in screening data for calibration as well as those used to optimize parameter values are discussed. A scheme developed to assess the relative accuracy of the frequency curves based on observed and simulated data indicated that the simulated data are equivalent to nine years of observed data in defining 2-year floods, and fifteen years in defining 100-year floods. Discharges corresponding to the best estimate of flows for selected recurrence intervals are tabulated for each modeled basin. Frequency-discharge profiles are shown for regulated reaches on eleven major streams. These regression equations and discharge profiles enable the design engineer to estimate flood-frequency characteristics for almost all streams that drain more than 2 square miles.</p><p>Ten regression models for eight flood-frequency regions consist of regression equations that relate floods for recurrence intervals of 2.33, 10, 25, 50 and 100 years to readily determinable drainage-basin characteristics. Individual equations include no more than two of the following drainage-basin characteristics as independent variables: drainage area, channel slope, percent of area which serves for storage of surface water, and index of average annual excess precipitation.</p><p>Standard errors of estimate for regression equations applicable to drainage areas of more than 15 square miles range from 16 to 33 percent. For smaller drainage areas, the highest standard error of estimate is 56 percent. The equations do not apply to streams whose drainage basins are highly urbanized or extensively strip mines; neither do they apply if runoff from more than 15 percent of the drainage basin upstream from the site of interest is regulated.</p><p>Peak discharges for recurrence intervals of 2.33, 10, 25, 50, and 100 years, as attenuated by installed and planned reservoirs, are presented for the Total storm precipitation equaled or exceeded 3 inches (76 mm) in some areas. The total storm yield on the area of significant runoff was probably between 20,000 and 25,000 acre-feet (2.5 x 107 m3 and 3.1 x 107 m3) of water. Of this amount, probably less than 3,000 acre-feet (37 x 106 m3) flowed directly to Lake Mead. \r\n\r\nPeak flows of Tropicana Wash, Flamingo Wash, Las Vegas Creek, and Las Vegas Wash were the highest ever determined. Flooding caused the loss of two lives and inflicted extensive property damage. Total damage was reportedly estimated by the Clark County Flood Control District at $4-5 million. \r\n\r\nProblems associated with sediment erosion, transportation, and deposition occurred throughout the flooded area. An unknown amount of the material transported during the flood was deposited in Lake Mead near the mouth of Las Vegas Wash. Lateral erosion appeared more prominent than vertical erosion along most major channels, except on Las Vegas Wash at Northshore Road where downcutting threatened the loss of the highway. Water-quality variables investigated were discharge, temperature, major chemical constituents, selected trace metals, specific conductance, suspended sediment, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, pH , total alkalinity, carbon dioxide, total organic carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, algal growth potential, coliform bacteria, periphyton, and benthic invertebrates. Results indicate that water in the reach of the Merced River studied is a dilute system of good quality. Mean concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus were highest in the Merced River at Rancheria Flat. Algal growth potential tests revealed that phosphorus was limiting algal growth at Happy Isles Bridge, El Capitan Bridge, and South Fork Merced River, which nitrogen was limiting it at Rancheria Flat. Input of excessive nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations in the Merced River during the summer low-flow period, and mixing with warm tributary inflow could cause excessive algal growth and production.
