Large quantities of ground water and surface water are available in Washington County. Major sources of ground water are the Gosport Sand and Lisbon Formation undifferentiated, the Miocene Series undifferentiated, and alluvium and low terrace deposits. The Miocene, the most productive source of ground water, will yield 0.5 to 1.0 mgd (million gallons per day) per well and is a potential source of larger supplies in most of the county. The quantity of potable water available is governed largely by geologic structures. Average flows of the Tombigbee and Mobile Rivers in the southeast corner of the county are 18,200 and 39,400 mgd. Average runoff originating in the county is about 1,100 mgd or 1 mgd per square mile. Water in aquifers tapped by wells generally contains less than 500 mg/l (milligrams per liter) dissolved solids. The water generally is soft to moderately hard. Water in streams is soft to moderately hard and low in dissolved solids. Estimated water use in 1966 was 43.5 mgd of which 10.9 mgd was ground water and 32.6 mgd was surface water. Lava flows underlie the entire basin, and unconsolidated sedimentary deposits overlie the lavas in the Camas Prairie-Glenwood area and in small areas elsewhere. A spring supplies water to much of the Camas Prairie-Glenwood area through a public system, so not many wells are used now. About 56 million gallons (110 acre-feet) of ground water was used in 1974. The unconsolidated deposits yield from 1 to 500 gallons per minute of water to wells, and the basalt can yield more than 100 gallons per minute and possibly several thousand gallons per minute to deep wells. Ground-water recharge and discharge on the reservation is estimated to average 550,000 acre-feet per year.

All Geological Survey reports and maps on Alaska published or released to open files during 1975 are listed by the quadrangles (scale 1:250,000) into which Alaska has been divided for topographic mapping (p. 3). Also listed are U.S. Bureau of Mines reports on the geology and mineral resources of Alaska, but not those that deal exclusively with other subjects such as economics. Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys published and open-filed reports and maps that were received by the Alaskan Geology Branch of the U.S. Geological Survey before March 1, 1976 are listed; the availability of several other reports and maps was publicly announced, but the documents were not available to me in time for them to be included here.

Most of the reports and maps in this index bear a 1975 imprint date. Others bear earlier imprint dates, but were not released until 1975. All Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys open-file reports and maps were withdrawn in 1974 for revision, consolidation, or assignment of new identification numbers. Those reissued reports and maps that I received before March 1, 1976 are listed in this index, no matter what imprint date they may bear. Also included are a few reports that were released before 1975, but hitherto had escaped my attention.

Reports that deal with Alaska as a whole, with areas that can not be identified with a specific quadrangle, or that are mainly statistical presentations are listed under ALASKA - GENERAL, as are indexes and the like. Reports and maps that deal with offshore areas not within quadrangle boundaries are listed under OFFSHORE AREAS. The ALASKA - GENERAL and OFFSHORE AREAS lists appear before the alphabetically arranged quadrangle listings.

The Helley-Smith bedload sampler operates on a pressure-difference principle and consists of an expanding nozzle, nylon-mesh sample bag , and external components for structural integrity and stability under flow conditions. The Helley-Smith bedload sampler has a hydraulic efficiency, the ratio of the mean velocity in the sampler nozzle to the mean ambient velocity, of approximately 1.54. Factors affecting the hydraulic efficiency include the geometry of the orifice and the open area of t he sampler bag .

The exit-to-entrance area ratio of the nozzle is the major factor influencing hydraulic characteristics of the sampler. For the nozzles tested, the hydraulic efficiency rapidly increased to a maximum value as the exit-to-entrance area ratio increased . The hydraulic efficiency increased from 1.06 to 1.54 as the exit-entrance area ratio increased from 1.00 to 2.62. With an exit-entrance ratio greater than 2.62 but less than 3.22, this efficiency remained constant at 1.55.

Filling the sample bag to 40 percent capacity with a sediment larger in diameter than the mesh size of the bag had no effect on the hydraulic efficiency. Particles close to the 0.2 mm mesh size of the sample bag plugged the openings and caused the efficiency to decrease in an undetermined manner.

The oval-shaped caldera is bounded by arcuate normal faults on the north and south and by rhyolite ring domes on the west. \r\n\r\nPrecollapse ash-flow tuffs exposed within the south caldera rim consist of three cooling units and are peralkaline in composition. Refractive indexes of nonhydrated glasses from basal vitrophyres of the. units range from 1.493 to 1.503 and are typical of comendites. Post-collapse intracaldera rocks consist of tuffaceous lake sediments, rhyolite flows and domes, and ash-flow tuffs. \r\n\r\nWithin the caldera are the mercury mines of Bretz, Cordero, McDermitt, Opalite, and Ruja and the Moonlight uranium mine. The mercury mines are adjacent to ring fracture faults, and the uranium mine and other uranium occurrences are located within rhyolite ring domes. Fluid inclusions in quartz indicate a deposition temperature of 340?C for the uranium deposit and 200?C for the mercury deposits. The Madison crops out in the Bighorn and Pryor Mountains and in the mountains west of the study area. These rocks consist of cyclically deposited normal-marine carbonates and restricted-marine carbonates and evaporites. The Madison ranges in thickness from about 700 feet (210 metres) in the Bighorn Mountains to about 2,000 feet (610 metres) in the Williston basin. The top of the Madison ranges in depth from land surface in the mountains to about 10,000 feet (3,000 metres) below land surface along the MontanaWyoming border. \r\n\r\nThe potentiometric surface of water in the Madison Group slopes northeastward from the outcrops. Potentiometric lows occur in the Cat Creek anticline-Porcupine dome area along the Bighorn River and at the north end of Powder River basin. Potentiometric highs occur in outcrop areas, on the interstream divide between the Bighorn, Tongue, and Yellowstone Rivers, and along the Cedar Creek anticline. The potentiometric surface ranges from 1,200 feet (370 metres) below land surface in the topographically high areas in the southern part of the area to 1,000 feet (300 metres) above land surface along the Yellowstone River. \r\n\r\nYields from wells range from about 50 gallons per minute (3 litres per second) at several places to a reported 1,400 gallons per minute (88 litres per second) from a flowing well on the north side of the Porcupine dome. Yields estimated or reported from drill-stem tests range from about 1 to 157 gallons per minute {0.1 to 9.9 litres per second). Water from the Madison generally contains less than 3,000 milligrams per litre dissolved solids south of T. 1 N., and from 3,000 to 10,000 milligrams per litre in most of the remaining area; in the Williston basin the concentration increases to more than 100,000 milligrams per litre. In the southeastern and southwestern parts of the area, calcium, magnesium, and sulfate ions constitute more than 75 percent of the dissolved constituents, in milliequivalents per litre.
