During relatively stable base flow in 1976-77, the discharge was about 32 cubic feet per second. Chloride concentrations at base flow increased about 800 milligrams per liter in the Smoky Hill River and 550 milligrams per liter in the Solomon River.</p><p>The source of the saline water is the underlying Wellington aquifer, a zone of dissolution, subsidence, and collapse along the eastern margin of the Wellington Formation. Locally, brine from the aquifer moves upward through collapse structures in the confining layer at the base of the alluvium. The brine discharge ranges from 0.3 to 0.8 cubic foot per second, and the chloride load ranges from 150 to 370 tons per day.</p><p>Results from a mathematical model of the fl ow system indicated that recharge from periodic flooding, as in 1973, was sufficient to reverse the normal (197677) hydraulic gradient between aquifers. Although brine discharge was temporarily reduced, saline-water discharge to the rivers increased.</p><p>The discharge of brine could be intercepted by pumping wells completed in the Wellington aquifer to lower the potentiometric head and reduce upward flow. The intercepted brine could be discharged into formations underlying the area at depth or piped to a storage reservoir from which the brine would be evaporated or released to the rivers during peak flows. Environmental geologic studies are being conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey prior to the scheduled September 1981 sale date. Seismic-reflection records, collected with 40- to 95-cm3 airgun, 800-joule minisparker, 800-joule boomer, and 3.5-and 12-kilohertz systems and covering over 6,400 km of trackline have been examined to identify geologic conditions at or below the seafloor that might affect petroleum operations. Of the total trackline distance, 865 km were collected in June 1980 aboard the Geological Survey's ship R/V S.P. LEE. The remainder were collected by Nekton Inc. in 1979, under contract to the USGS (Fig. 2). Navigation in the study area was by Loran C. The 368 kilometers of survey were conducted in Block Island Sound, in Rhode Island Sound, and over the mid-Continental Shelf south of Block Island and Martha's Vineyard.</p><p>Although the records are generally of good quality, variable ship speeds were caused by changes of wind and sail. Thus, care must be used in dimensional and orientation analysis of the bed-form features observed on the records.</p><p>On the midshelf, three bottom types were observed: 1) smooth, featureless sea floor, 2) elongated bodies of megaripples, and 3) ground-fishing trawler marks. The distribution of the .features seems to be related to current velocity, grain-size distribution, water depth, and fishing intensity. The midshelf survey results are discussed with cruise data of R/V CAPE HENLOPEN (also collected in the spring of 1978) \\ by Twichell and others.</p><p>The sonographs from Block Island and Rhode Island Sounds show a pattern indicative of a till cap atop a submerged part of the coastal end moraine, as well as the megarippled and smooth sea floor.</p><p>The original records may be examined in the U.S. Geological Survey offices in Woods Hole, Mass. Model analysis indicates that only the area within a radius of about 2 miles of the dam on the present Sheyenne River would be affected by rising water levels as a result of a lake stage at 995 feet. The rise of water levels depends on time and hydraulic properties of the aquifer. The maximum projected rise in water levels at the various stages should occur in about 50 to 100 years. Evapotranspiration and existing drains will be effective in limiting the extent of water-level rise. Water is under confined conditions in the central 3,300 square miles. Transmissivity is less than 1,000 feet squared per day. Storage coefficient is less than 0.0004 in the confined part of the aquifer and at least 0.1 in the unconfined part. Recharge is about 13,000 acre-feet per year, and storage at equilibrium, which was before 1965, was at least 180 million acre-feet. Ground-water withdrawals were less than 400 acre-feet per year before 1970 and increased to 5,300 acre-feet per year 1976-1979. By 1980, municipal-supply pumpage is expected to exceed that for a coal-slurry pipeline. Water levels have declined throughout the confined part of the aquifer. Decline of more than 100 feet was calculated for an area of 200 square miles through 1979 and was projected for 440 square miles through 2001. In the unconfined part, project declines averaged less than 1 foot. If pumping for coal slurry stopped, most of the decline would recover within 10 years. The PNAGU meeting included special volcanology sessions planned by William I. Rose, Jr., Bruce A. Nolf, amd David A. Johnston. Publication of the guidebook volume was originally planned for early 1980 by the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries (DOGAMI). Inevitable delays, subsequent scheduling problems, and the death of Dave Johnston in the May 18 eruption of Mount St. Helens led to this publication as a USGS Circular.\n\nThis circular differs from typical U.S. Geological Survey compilations in that not all these papers have been examined by the Geologic Names Committee of the Survey. This Committee is charged with ensuring consistent usage of formational and other stratigraphic names in U.S. Geological Survey publications. Because many of the contributions are from workers outside the Survey, review by the Geologic Names Committee would have been inappropriate. Each author provided camera-ready pages, and the articles have not been edited for uniformity of style or usage.\n\nThe contributions are generally ordered so as to describe the areas from north to south.
