Triassic (Bocas Formation), Jurassic (Jordan and Giron Formations).and Cretaceous (Tambor, Rosa Blanca, Paja, Tablazo, Simiti, La Luna, and Umir Formations) sedimentary rocks overlie the metamorphic rocks and are younger than most of the intrusions. A geological and geochemical reconnaissance of part of the central Santander Massif included the Vetas and California gold districts. At Vetas the gold is generally in brecciated aphanitic quartz and phyllonite. Dark-gray material in the ore may be graphite. The ore veins follow steep west-northwest- and north-northeast-striking fracture zones. No new gold deposits were found. Additional geochemical studies should concentrate on western Loma Pozo del Rey and on improvement of the gold extraction process. \r\n\r\nAt California the gold is in pyritiferous quartz veins and quartz breccia. Ore containing black sooty material (graphite?) is highly radioactive. Some of the mineralization is post-Lower Cretaceous. Soil samples indicate that gold deposits lie under the thick blanket of soil on the ridges above the zone of mining. Three principal gold targets are outlined by gold and associated minerals in pan concentrates. The close relation of gold and copper anomalies suggests that copper may be useful as a pathfinder for gold elsewhere in the region. Based on occurrences of gold or high concentrations of pyrite or chalcopyrite in pan concentrates and on analytical data, eight potential gold targets are outlined in the central massif. Reconnaissance of the surrounding region is warranted.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr77281","usgsCitation":"Evans, J.G., 1976, Geological and geochemical reconnaissance in the central Santander Massif, Departments of Santander and Norte de Santander, Colombia: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 77-281, iii, 43 p. :ill., 13 maps (12 fold. in envelope) ;29 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr77281.","productDescription":"iii, 43 p. :ill., 13 maps (12 fold. in envelope) ;29 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":94875,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0281/plate-01.pdf","size":"3419","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":94876,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0281/plate-02.pdf","size":"3720","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":94877,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0281/plate-03.pdf","size":"3941","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":94878,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0281/plate-04.pdf","size":"2632","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":94879,"rank":404,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0281/plate-05.pdf","size":"2477","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":94880,"rank":405,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0281/plate-06.pdf","size":"2456","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":94881,"rank":406,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0281/plate-07.pdf","size":"2452","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":94882,"rank":407,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0281/plate-08.pdf","size":"2379","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":94883,"rank":408,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0281/plate-09.pdf","size":"2504","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":94884,"rank":409,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0281/plate-10.pdf","size":"2643","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":94885,"rank":410,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0281/plate-11.pdf","size":"2465","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":94886,"rank":411,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0281/plate-12.pdf","size":"2379","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":141659,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0281/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":36332,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0281/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b11e4b07f02db6a23d9","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Evans, James George","contributorId":73578,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Evans","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"George","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":158289,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

This growth has resulted in an increased demand for information for additional domestic, industrial, and municipal water supplies. A knowledge of the occurrence of ground water will permit a more efficient allocation of the resource. Aquifers in the two drainage basins include: alluvium, basalts, the Mesa Verde Formation, Mancos Shale, Dakota Sandstone, Morrison Formation, Entrada Sandstone, Maroon Formation, Eagle Valley Evaporite, and undifferentiated formations. Except for aquifers in the alluvium, and basalt, well yields are generally low and are less than 25 gallons per minute. Well yields form aquifers in the alluvium and basalt can be as much as several hundred gallons per minute. Water quality is dependent of rock type. Calcium bicarbonate is the predominant type of water in the study area. However, calcium sulfate type water may be found in aquifers in the Eagle Valley Evaporite and in the alluvium where the alluvial material has been derived from the Eagle Valley Evaporite. Concentrations of selenium in excess of U.S. Public Health Service standards for drinking water can be found locally in aquifers in the Eagle Valley Evaporite. A portable neutron logger was used to record monthly soil-moisture profiles in the unsaturated zone at 11 sites in the basin. Moisture content, computed in inches of depth over the basin, ranged from 51.41 inches in April to 37.62 inches in August. Thickness of the unsaturated zone was greatest in April and was least in June. The observed absence of a pulse, or wave, of moisture moving down through the soil at most sites may be due to the infrequency of measurements, the location of sites in sandy, well-drained areas, and a relatively constant source of moisture (precipitation) at the surface. The study does not indicate a strong correlation between volume of snowmelt and soil-moisture; this may be due to the high porosity and permeability of soil material at the observation sites. The recording of aerial thermographic data on videotape is established as one of the prerequisites for the preparation of more accurate mosaics. Post-mission processing of the videotape record can rectify the nadir line to a topographic map base, correct for v/h variations in adjacent flight lines, correct for yaw distortions, rectify distortions caused by pitch, and rectify distortions produced by non-linearity of the side-wise scan. Installation of a thermal infrared scanning radiometer in a gyrostabilized mount and post-mission processing of the videotape record (principally rectification of side-wise scan distortion) would yield a controlled, photogrammetrically accurate thermographic mosaic. However, the techniques used in the preparation of the uncontrolled thermographic mosaic of Yellowstone National Park can be immediately applied to the preparation of regional thermographic mosaics, important to geologists and other scientists and engineers in studies of geothermal and volcanic areas, and to other types of environmental investigations such as pollution studies of large water bodies (e.g., harbors, estuaries, lakes, etc.), where a precise planimetric image is not critical.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"American Society of Photogrammetry","publisherLocation":"Falls Church, VA","usgsCitation":"Williams, R., Hasell, P.G., Sellman, A.N., and Smedes, H.W., 1976, Thermographic mosaic of Yellowstone National Park: Photogrammetric Engineering and Remote Sensing, v. 42, no. 10, p. 1315-1324.","productDescription":"10 p.","startPage":"1315","endPage":"1324","numberOfPages":"10","costCenters":[{"id":222,"text":"Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":288546,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://www.asprs.org/Photogrammetric-Engineering-and-Remote-Sensing/PE-RS-Archive-Search-2009-and-earlier.html"},{"id":288547,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Idaho;Montana;Wyoming","otherGeospatial":"Yellowstone National Park","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -111.156,44.1324 ], [ -111.156,45.109 ], [ -109.8242,45.109 ], [ -109.8242,44.1324 ], [ -111.156,44.1324 ] ] ] } } ] }","volume":"42","issue":"10","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"539acc59e4b0e83db6d09037","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Williams, Richard S. For the three divergent rangeland test areas, centered on Broken W, Alice Springs and Kalgoorlie, detailed interpretation of the imagery only partially satisfied the information requirements set. It was most useful in the Broken Hill area where fenceline contrasts in range condition were readily visible. At this and the other sites an overstorey of trees made interpretation difficult. Whilst the low resolution characteristics and the lack of stereoscopic coverage hindered interpretation it was felt that this type of imagery with its vast coverage, present low cost and potential for repeated sampling is a useful addition to conventional aerial photography for all rangeland types.","language":"English","publisher":"Australian Rangeland Society","publisherLocation":"Cottesloe, Australia","doi":"10.1071/RJ9760053","usgsCitation":"Graetz, R., Carneggie, D.M., Hacker, R., Lendon, C., and Wilcox, D., 1976, A qualitative evaluation of Landsat imagery of Australian rangelands: The Australian Rangeland Journal, v. 1, no. 1, p. 53-59, https://doi.org/10.1071/RJ9760053.","productDescription":"7 p.","startPage":"53","endPage":"59","numberOfPages":"7","costCenters":[{"id":222,"text":"Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":288543,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":288542,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1071/RJ9760053"}],"country":"Australia","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ 112.9,-54.8 ], [ 112.9,-9.2 ], [ 159.3,-9.2 ], [ 159.3,-54.8 ], [ 112.9,-54.8 ] ] ] } } ] }","volume":"1","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"539acbe4e4b0e83db6d08ead","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Graetz, R.D.","contributorId":64568,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Graetz","given":"R.D.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":494679,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Carneggie, David M.","contributorId":62758,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Carneggie","given":"David","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":494678,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Hacker, R.","contributorId":70691,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hacker","given":"R.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":494680,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Lendon, C.","contributorId":72304,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lendon","given":"C.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":494681,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Wilcox, D.G.","contributorId":62141,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wilcox","given":"D.G.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":494677,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5}]}}

Approximately 9 hours of computer and operator time were used to analyze the Lake Titicaca image, 1443-14073, acquired 9 October 1973. The total area of the lake and associate wetlands was calculated and found to be within 3 percent of previous measurements. The area was subdivided by reflectance characteristics employing cluster analysis of all 4 bands and later compared with density values of band 4. Reflectance variations may be attributed to surface roughness, water depth and bottom characteristics, turbidity, and floating matter. Wetland marsh vegetation, vegetation related to ground-water effluents, natural grasses, and farm crops were separated by cluster analysis. Sandstone, limestone, sand dunes, and several volcanic rock types were similarly separated and displayed by assigned colors and extended through the entire scene. Waste dumps of the Matilde Zinc Mine and smaller mine workings were tentatively identified by signature analysis.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>Histograms of reflectance values and map printouts were automatically obtained as a record of each of the principal themes. The saturated zone consists of separate fresh-water bodies laterally surrounded and underlain by extensive brackish aureoles, in which the meteoric water is mixed with sea water. The meteoric water enters the aquifer after passing through the soil or through marshes (outcrops of the ground-water bodies), in each case causing an influx of CO</span>2<span>&nbsp;to the saturated zone. Examination of the ground-water chemistry enables mapping of (a) the extent of mixing of meteoric ground water and sea water; (b) P</span>CO2<span>; (c) the extent of saturation with calcite and aragonite; (d) concentration of Sr; and (e) the amount of calcium and magnesium derived from the limestones. It is concluded that three processes control the chemistry of Bermudian ground water: (a) generation of elevated CO</span>2<span>&nbsp;partial pressures in soils and marshes; (b) dissolution of metastable carbonate minerals (principally aragonite); and (c) mixing with sea water. Bermuda ground water apparently approaches a steady state of aragonite dissolution (at slight subsaturation) and concurrent precipitation of calcite cement. Large Sr/Ca ratios in the ground water indicate that the dissolution of aragonite is incongruent. Dissolution is most pronounced near the marshes where CO</span>2<span>&nbsp;content is highest. Mixing with sea water is not significant in controlling calcite saturation. Only small amounts of magnesium enter the ground water by incongruent dissolution of magnesium calcite, an apparently slow process on the time scale of passage of the ground water through the saturated zone. All of the waters are well undersaturated with respect to dolomite. It is estimated that the present rate of recrystallization of aragonite to calcite is about 0.32 cm</span>3<span>&nbsp;of aragonite to calcite per m</span>3<span>&nbsp;of the saturated zone per year. At the present rate of chemical weathering, 360 m</span>3<span>&nbsp;of the saturated zone is lost each year through solution and transported to the sea by ground water.&nbsp;</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"Geological Society of America","doi":"10.1130/0016-7606(1976)87<1301:HOBACH>2.0.CO;2","issn":"00167606","usgsCitation":"Plummer, L., Vacher, H., MacKenzie, F., Bricker, O., and Land, L., 1976, Hydrogeochemistry of Bermuda: A case history of ground-water diagenesis of biocalcarenites: Geological Society of America Bulletin, v. 87, no. 9, p. 1301-1316, https://doi.org/10.1130/0016-7606(1976)87<1301:HOBACH>2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"16 p. Previous Pb and Sr isotope studies indicate derivation of the magmas from an isotopically homogeneous source. This study presents new data for rare-earth elements (REE), U, Th, Ba, Sr, Rb, and Ni from 10 samples of the Summer Coon sequence. Alkali elements are high in all rocks; as SiO2<span>&nbsp;</span>increases, Ba increases from 900 to 2,000 ppm, Rb increases from 35 to 90 ppm, Sr decreases from 900 to 350 ppm, K/Rb decreases slightly, Ba/Sr increases, U increases from 0.5 to 2.5 ppm, and Th increases from 2 to 7 ppm. Chondrite-normalized REE patterns are strongly fractionated in comparison with oceanic-arc andesite-dacite sequences. La is 80 to 120 times chondritic abundance, but Yb and Lu are less than 10 times chondritic abundance. Small negative Eu anomalies characterize the rhyolites. Nickel in the andesites is 40 to 70 ppm.</p><p>The origin of the andesite is interpreted in terms of nonmodal partial melting of a trace-element—enriched garnet-bearing source, possibly subducted crust that has converted to eclogite.
