A body of moderately well sorted and well stratified ice-cemented sand, here informally called the Coral Ridge sand body, was deposited across eastern Taylor Valley before the deposition of a veneer of glaciogenic deposits related to late Pleistocene incursions of the Ross Sea ice sheet. The Coral Ridge sand body is more than 50 m thick where preserved in a north-south trending ridge that is transverse to the long axis of the valley. The ridge forms a drainage divide that stands 100 m above sea level and separates the basin of Lake Fryxell on the west from the seacoast to the east. An erosion surface having about 35 m of abrupt local relief was apparently developed on the sand body before the latest incursions of Ross Sea ice.
The Coral Ridge sand body accumulated in a fluviatile or possibly fluviomarine deltaic environment following deposition of coarse diamictons and interbedded layers of sand in a fjord that once occupied the site of Taylor Valley. From its sedimentary characteristics and topographic distribution, the sand was deposited across the valley following filling of the fjord. The 1) comparatively high degree of sorting, 2) general lack of clay and silt, and of very coarse detritus, and 3) common fluviatile cross-stratification, argue for stream transport and for accumulation principally above sea level. Coarse glacial detritus, which must have existed in the source area, was not transported to the area of sand deposition. Very fine glacial detritus that presumably was transported with the sand was deposited some place beyond the area of sand deposition. Evidence bearing on the direction of transport, and thus the source area, has not yet been developed. The source could have been a grounded ice sheet in the Ross Sea to the east, or alternatively, the source could have lay to the west in the area of the Lake Fryxell basin at a time when the basin was occupied by a more extensive Taylor Glacier.
Evidence bearing on the age of the Coral Ridge sand body also is not fully developed. West of the Coral Ridge divide, the upper 2-3 m of a 14-mthick section of Coral Ridge sand near the top of hole DVDP-11 is reversely polarized. All other beds of the ice-cemented sand have been found to be normally polarized. Two possibilities exist: 1) the Coral Ridge sand body was deposited during late Pliocene time, mainly during a time of normal polarity of the Gauss polarity epoch, or 2) the sand body is much younger and was deposited during the Bruhnes normal polarity epoch of Pleistocene time, less than 730,000 years ago (in which case, the reversely polarized strata are anomalous). Additional subsurface and surface geological and paleomagnetic study is required to resolve the problems of age and source, critical to deciphering the late Cenozoic glacial and structural history of Taylor Valley and environs.

The accompanying increase in studies of avian populations has resulted in a growing need for a comprehensive bibliography of Alaska ornithology. An initial effort by Bartonek and Lensink (1978) provided a list of published and unpublished references on marine birds, but this list was only marginally useful because it lacked adequate indexing and annotation of references cited. Their bibliography, however, plus those of Cade (1953) and Gabrielson and Lincoln (1959), provided the basis and primary reference sources for our work.
In the present bibliography we have attempted to compile all substantive references addressing water birds in Alaska because this group of birds appears to be most Vulnerable to repercussions of development, particularly along the coast. However, the works cited make up an estimated 70-80% of all literature on birds in Alaska, and this volume thus provides an initial source of references on terrestrial birds. This bibliography, which contains 1554 citations, is current for most journal sources through 1979 and most of 1980. The content of each paper has been summarized, and we have indexed the citations by subject, species, and geographic location to make the bibliography a more useful reference. Furthermore, the bibliography has been designed to facilitate future inclusion of references that have been omitted or that will be published in the rapidly growing body of literature on Alaska birds.

Tweto and Case (1972) showed that this belt of gravity lows probably reflects a series of Laramide and post-Laramide intrusions of relatively low density which may have influenced the hydrothermal systems responsible for much of the mineralization in the Colorado Mineral Belt.

Particular emphasis is placed on a comprehensive structural interpretation of the west half of the valley that is based on map compilation of concealed faults that have been inferred from geophysical methods and exposed faults that can be seen in the field and (or) on aerial photographs. The faults apparently control the location of modern geothermal activity and are thus important to geothermal exploration.

The data include continuous streamflow at four sites, monthly stream water quality at seven sites, ground-water levels and periodic ground-water quality in four wells from 1972 through 1978.
Pumpage from the Cohansey Sand in the study area was lower than anticipated because of a slowdown in construction. The average pumpage of 0.48 million gallons per day during 1978 had little effect on ground-water levels.
Dissolved-solids concentrations were lower in a well upgradient from the urbanized area. Elevated levels of dissolved solids, specific conductance, chloride, nitrate, and phosphorus were found in the shallow ground water in the vicinity of the Winslow wastewater treatment plant because of effluent infiltration ponds. Nitrate was greatly reduced in October 1974 by a change in the treatment process, which increased denitrification. Phosphorus concentrations in the ground water remained elevated, however.
Water from the most urbanized drainage basin was a magnesium bicarbonate type, while the less developed basins had sodium chloride sulfate type waters. Water from the two developed basins had higher median pH (7.1) compared with that of the other basins (5.6-6.3).
Winslow Crossing’s development had only a slight effect on the quality of water in Great Egg Harbor River. The river receives point and non-point discharges upstream from Winslow Crossing, and the quality of the water generally improves as the river flows downstream.
Streamflow and rainfall were slightly above normal. Unit hydrograph analysis of one basin showed an 80 percent increase in the peak discharge of a 60-minute unit hydrograph (from approximately 150 to 270 cubic feet per second) after the development of 14 percent of the basin. Installation of a stormwater detention basin reduced the peak discharge to 220 ft3/s. Sediment discharge from this basin averaged 0.24 tons/d/mi2 during construction but decreased to the preconstruction level of 0.06 tons/d/mi2 after the completion of construction and the installation of the detention basin.

This period saw the conclusion of the Hollister MWDM effort that has produced nearly continuous, high precision, line length measurements for the last 5 years. The establishment of an observatory similar to that used during the Hollister MWDM effort is underway near San Juan Bautista and both high precision vertical and horizontal measurements will commence in the near future. An interim measurement program was begun near Palmdale in Southern California during October 1980 and is continuing at the present time. Extensive electronic modification to the MWDM instrument has also been successfully completed during this reporting period. Each of these efforts will be discussed in more detail in the following sections of this report.
