Two overlapping basin structures underlie Mare Serenitatis: a larger one to the south and a smaller one to the north. The massifs and sculptured hills in the Taurus-Littrow area and the mountains and knobby terrain in the outer Rook ring (third ring) of the Orientale basin are similar in morphology ; the Apollo 17 site lies approximately on the third ring of the southern Serenitatis basin structure. Assuming the third ring represents the approximate rim of the transient cavity of the southern Serenitatis structure, we suggest that ejecta many kilometres thick was deposited in the Taurus-Littrow area by the southern Serenitatis impact. This ejecta is visible in the massifs in the Apollo 17 landing site as discontinuous, irregular lenses of variable lithology. This formation, which was derived from erosion of intertidal bars in Turnagain Arm, averages 1.5 m thick seaward of the Seward Highway and 0.9 m thick landward. Its distribution is controlled both, by the arrangement of the major streams that enter tidewater and by manmade features such as the highway and railroad embankments. The Placer River Silt is still being deposited. The contemporary lowland sedimentation system of the Portage area includes a number of depositional settings: (1) In the Placer River Silt upper tidal flats, levees, and channelway fans, (2) elsewhere in the intertidal zone tidal stream channels, lower tidal flats, and saltwater marsh, and (3) in the supratidal zone gravel levees, freshwater marsh, bogs, and lakes. The complex is an ophiolite assemblage and indicates that a Late Cretaceous arc-trench system, probably a southerly extension of the Middle America Trench, lay along and west of the present Pacific coast. Polarity of the system is indicated by the presence of a volcanic olivine basalt arc east of the ophiolite belt and by a younger magmatic arc farther east. Relative lack of metamorphism of the ophiolite assemblage suggests that the rocks were obducted rather than subducted. Fossil evidence indicates that the complex was emplaced no later than the late Campanian. By the late Eocene both the ophiolite assemblage and the olivine basalt arc had been established as major sediment sources for basins that lay to the east, and they continued as such through the Oligocene and possibly into the middle Miocene. Widespread deposition of trachyandesite lava and volcaniclastic sediments, local marine planation, uplift, and renewed volcanism mark what is presumed to be the end of the Miocene. Extreme south-to-north coarsening of the unconformably superposed Doan Formation and the presence of corals in the shaly facies of the Doan in the southern part of the mapped areas suggest that marine sedimentation there was undisturbed by orogeny and that intrusion of the Talamancan magmatic rocks must have followed deposition of the Doan. Volcaniclastic block breccia, characteristic of northern exposures of the Doan, indicates that volcanism in the proto- Cordillera Central had begun by at least Doan time. Volcanism has been a dominant process in central Costa Rica since that time.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","usgsCitation":"Krushensky, R.D., Malavassi, E.V., and Castillo, R.M., 1976, Geology of central Costa Rica and its implications in the geologic history of the region: Journal of Research of the U.S. Geological Survey, v. 4, no. 2, p. 127-134.","productDescription":"8 p.","startPage":"127","endPage":"134","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":402203,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":402202,"rank":1,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/journal/1976/vol4issue2/report.pdf"}],"country":"Costa Rica","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -83.638916015625,\n              9.112944562617598\n            ],\n            [\n              -82.96875,\n              9.893098633379584\n            ],\n            [\n              -83.51806640624999,\n              10.563422129963456\n            ],\n            [\n              -84.88037109375,\n              10.055402736564236\n            ],\n            [\n              -84.66064453125,\n              9.611582210984674\n            ],\n            [\n              -83.638916015625,\n              9.112944562617598\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"4","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Krushensky, Richard D.","contributorId":106994,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Krushensky","given":"Richard","email":"","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":844705,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Malavassi, Enrique V.","contributorId":18853,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Malavassi","given":"Enrique","email":"","middleInitial":"V.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":844706,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Castillo, Rolando M.","contributorId":27143,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Castillo","given":"Rolando","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":844707,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Five observation points were selected within a 610-metre reach of the stream below the injection site. Water samples were collected at the observation points during and immediately after the injection. A mathematical model of the stream was obtained by solving analytically and optimally the one-dimensional mass transport equation of the solutes in the stream. Animal abundance is about ten times greater in Costa Rican lowland wet forest than in Borneo. Radically different routes and rates of energy flow are postulated to account for the difference. In a series of upland (1010-1425 m) samples in the Philippines, the number of litter lizards and frogs increases with elevation. A single upland (1200 m) Costa Rican sample contains about three times as many animals per 100 m2 as two lowland sites. This increase with altitude correlates well with hypotheses that overall tropical forest productivity is greatest at intermediate elevations. Herpetofaunal densities are greater in wet areas compared to dry sites and flat terrain compared to slopes. These observations are linked to the greater variation and lesser total litter fall in dry sites and/or slopes. The number of species of amphibians and lizards regularly inhabiting the litter is similar in all wet lowland forests studied. Increasing elevation and decreasing rainfall correlate with faunas having fewer species. The former is seen as the result of the differential ability of lowland species to invade uplands, and the latter as a decrease in the kind and duration of frog-spawning sites. Reduced equitability with increasing elevation is principally due to the much greater proportional increase of the commonest species. In the evolution of American and Bornean-Philippine wet lowland faunas, frogs with direct development (Eleutherodactylus) have radiated in the former in the same fashion that skinks have in the latter.
","language":"English","publisher":"Wiley","doi":"10.2307/2387818","usgsCitation":"Scott, N.J., 1976, The abundance and diversity of the herpetofaunas of tropical forest litters: Biotropica, v. 8, p. 41-58, https://doi.org/10.2307/2387818.","productDescription":"18 p.","startPage":"41","endPage":"58","numberOfPages":"18","costCenters":[{"id":651,"text":"Western Ecological Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":129860,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"8","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aace4b07f02db66acbe","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Scott, Norman J. Using this method, estimates of inbreeding depression in populations of rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) following one generation of brother‐sister mating was calculated for three production traits–percent egg hatchability, percent fry survival from swim‐up to 150 days, and weight at 150 days. The inbreeding depression estimates obtained from male and female half‐sib families were 1.7 and 4.4% for percent egg hatchability, 22.2 and 16.1% for percent fry survival, and 12.0 and 9.8% for weight at 150 days, respectively. Estimates for fry survival and weight at 150 days were significant at P < 0.01 while egg hatchability estimates were nonsignificant. Following one generation of full‐sib mating, the calculated effect of inbreeding on the number of live fish and total weight of fish at 150 days of age showed a reduction of 16.1 and 24.4% in female families and 22.1 and 31.4% in male families, respectively. Thermal waters of sodium bicarbonate‐chloride composition are usually associated with hot‐water reservoirs. Chloride concentrations and stable isotope data indicate that the thermal waters have had varied histories. All of the thermal springs issue a mixture of fluid from the thermal reservoir and less saline, cooler water from one or more shallow aquifers. The composition of springs in Hot Creek Gorge may have been further altered by minor subsurface boiling. Thermal springs between Hot Creek and Lake Crowley issue mixtures of fresh and thermal waters which have lost heat by conductive cooling and changed composition by reaction with rock in the shallow aquifer. The silica content of water from Magma Richie 5 and mixing calculations based on the concentrations of silica in thermal waters collected from springs in Hot Creek Gorge and along Little Hot Creek indicate a temperature of at least 200°C in the thermal reservoir. The sodium‐potassium‐calcium geothermometer yields a reservoir temperature estimate near 200°C for most of the thermal springs. Bats were present in the area from March or April until November and roosted in cliffs in colonies generally including 20 or more individuals.  Pallid bats were highly selective in their choice of roost sites and minimized diurnal energy output by adaptive hypothermia and behavioral thermo-regulation.  In spring and autumn the bats roosted in vertical crevices responsive to changes in ambient temperatures.  Here temperatures remained low and the bats were torpid for much of the day, but when the crevices became heated in the late afternoon the bats were passively warmed prior to emergence.  Deep, horizontal crevices were preferred in summer; cliffs function as massive heat sinks, and in summer crevice temperatures remained moderate and relatively stable.  Throughout most of the day both the deep parts of the crevices and the body temperatures of the bats remained close to 30ºC; at this body temperature pallid bats have unexpectedly low metabolic rates (Trune, 1974).  By adjusting their positions and closeness to other bats in the thermal gradient within the crevice, bats dissipate heat early in the day, maintain a low metabolic rate through most of the fat and elevate the body temperature prior to emergence in the evening.  Of vital important to pallid bats in the summer are social behaviors that promote communal roosting at \"traditional\" crevices.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Journal of Mammalogy","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"American Society of Mammalogists","publisherLocation":"Provo, UT","doi":"10.2307/1379510","usgsCitation":"Vaughan, T.A., and O'Shea, T., 1976, Roosting ecology of the pallid bat, Antrozous pallidus: Journal of Mammalogy, v. 57, no. 1, p. 19-42, https://doi.org/10.2307/1379510.","productDescription":"24 p.","startPage":"19","endPage":"42","numberOfPages":"24","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":291841,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":291840,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.2307/1379510"}],"volume":"57","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"53e492cfe4b0fff40428a5e7","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Vaughan, Terry A.","contributorId":90648,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Vaughan","given":"Terry","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":497713,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"O'Shea, Thomas J. 0000-0002-0758-9730","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-0758-9730","contributorId":78071,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"O'Shea","given":"Thomas J.","affiliations":[{"id":291,"text":"Fort Collins Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":497712,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Earth resources data as discussed here are those obtained by remote-sensing instruments, including aerial cameras, multispectral cameras, multispectral scanners, and radar. They are obtained by spacecraft and high-altitude aircraft. Also, various agencies have been acquiring vast quantities of conventional aerial mapping photography from low and medium altitudes for more than 50 years. There is also brief information to assist the reader in locating published references and identifying research projects relating to application of Earth resources data to a variety of purposes. In all cases, it is not the intent to say what data are needed or how the data are to be used, but to describe where an interested person can begin to locate Earth resources data.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Printing Office","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","doi":"10.3133/70039205","usgsCitation":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey, 1976, Availability of Earth resources data: General Information Product, 46 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/70039205.","productDescription":"46 p.","numberOfPages":"48","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":261376,"rank":800,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/gip/70039205/report.pdf"},{"id":261377,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/gip/70039205/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5059ef08e4b0c8380cd4a0dd","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey","contributorId":128075,"corporation":true,"usgs":false,"organization":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey","id":535243,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Encompassing a total area of more than 300,000 sq km, most of the basins are either elongate structural sags, grabens, or half (asymmetric) grabens beneath the outer shelf. The regional trend of these basins is northwest, parallel with that of the continental margin. Two of the basins, St. George and Navarin, contain 7 to 10 km of Upper Cretaceous(?) and Cenozoic sedimentary strata. A major divergence in dip of beds in the upper half of the sedimentary section may reflect an abrupt shelf-wide change in the rate of sedimentation and/or subsidence, probably during the Miocene. The outer sub-shelf basement grabens and adjacent ridges (horsts) are bounded by high-angle normal faults that exhibit growth-type structure.

St. Matthew basin, an elongate, southwest-trending feature of the inner shelf, lies along the offshore expression of the Kaltag fault of western Alaska. The Kaltag fault, like the Denali fault in southwestern Alaska, does not extend to the outer Bering Sea shelf but ends or turns parallel with the margin within the inner shelf.

The inner shelf is underlain by a broad basement high, Nunivak arch, the seaward half of which is characterized by an arcuate belt of high-frequency and high-amplitude magnetic anomalies. This zone of intense magnetic anomalies along the shelf is probably the signature of a Mesozoic magmatic arc that extends from southwestern Alaska to eastern Siberia and consists of Jurassic to Cretaceous plutonic and volcanic rocks. We speculate that this magmatic arc resulted from oblique convergence and subduction in the Mesozoic between the Kula(?) and North American plates along the eastern Beringian margin. Folding and uplift in the area of the present outer shelf occurred contemporaneously with magmatism along the inner shelf. Plate convergence apparently ceased by the end of the Mesozoic or t e beginning of the Cenozoic. Subsequently, the foldbelt underlying the outer shelf was eroded extensively and rifted extensionally to form large, deep basins. On the average, the shelf has subsided more than 1.5 km. Data from the test well will be used by the city in the design of a proposed deep-well injection system for disposal of effluent from the treatment plant. Shallow wells in the vicinity of the drilling site were inventoried and sampled to provide a data base for detecting changes in ground water quality during construction and later operation of the deep wells. In addition, 16 small-diameter monitor wells, ranging in depth from 10 to 162 feet, were drilled at the test site. During the drilling of the deep test well, water samples were collected weekly from the 16 monitor wells for determination of chloride content and specific conductance. Evidence of small spills of salt water were found in monitor wells ranging in depth from 10 to 40 feet. Efforts to remove the salt water from the shallow unconfined aquifer by pumping were undertaken by the drilling contractor at the request of the city of West Palm Beach. The affected area is small and there has been a reduction of chloride concentration.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr7691","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the City of West Palm Beach, Florida","usgsCitation":"Pitt, W.A., and Meyer, F.W., 1976, Ground-water quality at the site of a proposed deep-well injection system for treated wastewater, West Palm Beach, Florida: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 76-91, 43 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr7691.","productDescription":"43 p.","costCenters":[{"id":27821,"text":"Caribbean-Florida Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":1000,"rank":100,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0091/ofr7691.pdf","text":"Report","size":"1.50 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"Report"},{"id":148425,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0091/coverthb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Florida","city":"West Palm Beach","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -80.13496398925781,\n 26.70513306062492\n ],\n [\n -80.09685516357422,\n 26.70513306062492\n ],\n [\n -80.09685516357422,\n 26.753581490264136\n ],\n [\n -80.13496398925781,\n 26.753581490264136\n ],\n [\n -80.13496398925781,\n 26.70513306062492\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","contact":"
Caribbean-Florida Water Science Center
U.S. Geological Survey
3321 College Avenue
Davie, FL 33314

Contact Pubs Warehouse
","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a96e4b07f02db65a870","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Pitt, William A. These nutrients are transported in the canals or into the peripheral marshes. Concentrations decrease sharply within 330 feet or less of the canals, whereas specific conductance remains essentially unchanged within this distance. The sharp decrease in inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus near the canal edge indicates net uptake in these shallow waters. Concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus also decrease as water moves through the conservation areas in canals. This decrease is due partly to dilution by rainfall and runoff, and partly to net uptake in the canals and their peripheral marsh. The large canals of the northern and eastern parts of the conservation areas often have relatively low concentrations of dissolved oxygen which show little fluctuation within 24 hours. Backpumping 50 percent of the total annual canal runoff in southeast Florida would add from 990 to 6,160 tons of nitrogen and from 10 to 62 tons of phosphorus to the conservation areas. The bottom sediments of the Everglades are a sink for nitrogen and phosphorus. They can, however, be a source of these nutrients when anaerobic conditions exist at the water-sediment interface or when bottom material becomes resuspended.
