This chapter contains practices used by the U.S. Geological Survey to assure the quality of analytical data for water, fluvial sediment, and aquatic organisms.
These practices are directed primarily toward personnel making water-quality measurements. Some detail specific quality control techniques, others document quality assurance procedures being used by the Central Laboratories System of the U.S. Geological Survey, and still others describe various statistical techniques and give examples of their use in evaluating and assuring the quality of analytical data.

These rocks have been folded to form the Panther Mountain syncline on the south and the Kinta anticline on the north. Alluvium along streams is less than 15 feet thick and consists mainly of sandy silt. Water in bedrock is under artesian conditions. Well depths range from 11 to 213 feet and average 75 feet. In 86% of the wells measured, the water level was less than 30 feet below the land surface. Because the rocks have minimal permeability, well yields probably are less than 5 gallons per minute. Ground water is commonly a mixed cation bicarbonate type with dissolved solids ranging from about 300 to 2,000 milligrams per liter. No relationship between water chemistry and well depth or geographic distribution is apparent. Streams in the area are ephemeral and there are extended periods of no flow. Blue Creek was dry 30% of the time during 1976-80 and had flows of less than 0.1 cubic foot per second for at least 80 consecutive days. Stream water is generally a mixed cation sulfate type. The maximum dissolved-solids concentration determined in stream water was 3670 milligrams per liter. Maximum suspended sediment discharge, in tons per day, was about 235 for Blue Creek, 40 for Blue Creek tributary, and 630 for Mathuldy Creek. Silt-clay particles (diameters less than 0.062 millimeter) are the dominant sediment size. Surface mining for coal undoubtedly will have some effect on the environment. The most likely deleterious effects are increased sediment loads in streams and increased mineralization of stream waters. However, these effects should be of only limited extent and duration if appropriate mining and reclamation practices are followed. The geochemical survey consisted of the collection of stream-sediment samples, stream-sediment samples taken for panning to produce heavy-mineral concentrates, and rock and water samples. The samples were analyzed by both wet chemical and semiquantita-tive emission spectrographic techniques. The sampling procedures, and methods of sample preparation and analysis were reported by Hinkle and others (1981).

Unoxidized siliceous \"black shale\" from drill hole NGA 7 is strongly enriched in Cd, Mo, Sb, Se, V, and Zn, and also contains relatively high concentrations of As, Ba, Cu, Ni, and Tl compared with nonmetalliferous shales. Analyses of 103 samples plotted against depth in drill holes NGA, NG31, and NGA7, and selected XRD data, show the following:
1. Groups of elements with distinct distribution patterns define most of major mineralogic components of the rocks. The \"normal shale\" component, which includes several detrital and authigenic phases, is indicated by covariations among Ti, Al, Fe, Na, Mg, K, B, Be, Co, Cr, Ga, La, Sc, Sr, and Zr. The shale component is diluted by varying amounts of the following minerals (and associated elements): silica (Si); dolomite (Mg, Ca, Mn, Sr); apatite (Ca, Be, Cr, La, Sr, Y); barite (Ba, Sr); sphalerite (Zn, Cd, Fe?); smithsonite (Cd, Co, Mn, Ni, Zn); bianchite (Cd, Ni, Zn) ; and bokite (V). Pyrite, gypsum, and jarosite were also identified.
2. The highly siliceous kerogenous metalliferous Gibellini facies is underlain by argillaceous and (or) dolomitic rocks. The transition zone deduced from the chemical data is not well defined in all instances, but probably represents the bottom of the black shale deposit.
3. Oxidation has reached to variable depths up to at least 150 ft, and has caused profound changes in the distributions of the enriched metals. Molybdenum, Se, and V have been partially removed from the upper parts of the sections and are concentrated near or slightly above the base of the Gibellini facies. Cadmium, Ni, and Zn have been strongly leached and now occur at or below the base of the Gibellini facies.
The variable depth of oxidation, the redistribution and separation of the metals, and the complex mineralogy of the deposit may make development of the claim complicated.

The samples were analyzed for common ions, dissolved metals, nutrients, dissolved organic carbon, volatile organic compounds, pH, temperature, and specific conductance. This report contains the results of the analyses, well construction data for the wells sampled, and simple statistical summaries for each parameter. Most parameters showed wide variations in concentration. Concentrations of dissolved organic carbon ranged from 0 to 108 mg/L (milligrams per liter), with a median of 1.7 mg/L. Chloride concentration ranged from 0.8 to 810 mg/L, with a median of 15 mg/L. Iron concentration ranged from 3 micrograms per liter to 79,000 micrograms per liter, with a median of 1,400 micrograms per liter. Detectable concentrations of volatile organic compounds were found in 46 wells, approximately 19 percent of the 246 wells sampled for such compounds. Trichloroethylene and benzene, the most common compounds, were detected in 24 and 18 wells, respectively. The maximum concentrations of several compounds detected include: benzene, 1,960 micrograms per liter; 1,1-dichloroethylene, 670 micrograms per liter; trichloroethylene, 472 micrograms per liter; and tetrachloroethylene, 335 micrograms per liter.

prospects have been conducted to determine the mineral resource potential of the Paiute Instant (Primitive) Study Area, Mohave County, Ariz. The study area encompasses part of the Virgin Mountains and the Sullivans Canyon area. Precambrian metamorphic and igneous rocks are exposed in the core and are overlain by folded and faulted Paleozoic and Mesozoic quartzose and carbonate rocks. Mesozoic sedimentary rocks are overlain by Cenozoic volcanic and sedimentary units. The geochemical and mines and prospects survey indicates that the study area contains some mineral deposits that presently are not economically significant. Oil and gas has not been discovered in the area, and the resource potential is apparently nil or at best very low; any future oil and gas exploration would most likely be conducted outside the study area where favorable exploration localities exist. Other combustibles such as coal and oil shale are not known to occur in the study area. There is no evidence of geothermal activity or surficial radioactive mineralization.
\nSeveral areas in the Paiute Instant Study Area are judged to have at best a low mineral potential. These include areas of copper, lead, manganese, molybdenum, nickel, silver, tungsten, and zinc mineralization, as well as occurrences of dumortierite, beryllium, arsenic, barium, gypsum, gem minerals, sand, gravel, and limestone. The metallic deposits and dumortieri te, beryllium, and arsenic occur over small surface areas. Significant production has not resulted from mining activity in mineralized areas. Sand, gravel, limestone, gem minerals, gypsum, and barium occurrences are far from major markets. Currently, there are no active mining operations in the study area.

S. Geological Survey and the Ministry of Development, Sultanate of Oman, during late 1973 and early 1974. The purpose of the investigation was to provide an evaluation of the mineral potential of northern Oman and produce recommendations leading toward the utilization of any viable mineral deposits that were found. The widespread copper deposits located within the Semail volcanics appear to be mineable, the iron-nickel laterites developed upon the weathered surface of the Semail ophiolite have economic potential. Manganese and chromite deposits investigated have only a marginal value and are not likely to be of economic importance in the near future. Discovery of economic copper and iron deposits warrants further geologic mapping and mineral exploration in northern Oman. In addition to this, recommendations regarding the organization of a geological and mining group within the Directorate of Petroleum and Minerals are presented.

This list contains information on western hemisphere strong-motion stations that have been installed and are maintained by many different organizations. It contains information on all of those stations for which there is some data in the files of the USGS, but the list is incomplete even for stations in the United States. Since the stations being maintained are continuously changing, it is impossible to have complete information about all of the stations at any one time. The objective is to provide the community of persons who have an interest in strong-motion programs an indication of the current status of the networks in this part of the world. The USGS also maintains a computerized Strong Motion Information Retrieval System (SMIRS) which permits searching for various types of information about the strong motion stations, records, and events (Converse, 1978). In general, the information in SMIRS is more current than the information in this list.
For convenience, the list has been arranged by country, north to south, alphabetically by states in the section for the United States, and then alphabetically by station name. Subsequent sections include a list by stations numbers, a cross-reference of obsolete station names, a cross-reference of station numbers as assigned by other agencies, and a cross-reference of three character designations for those that find that form of station designation useful. A list of the stations that were installed as required by a local building code or that are maintained by the owner of the facility appears in the Appendix. That list has not been updated since 1976 at which time the USGS stopped receiving information about new installations required by building codes.

The four major bedrock aquifers that occur in the basin are the Laramie-Fox Hills aquifer (the deepest aquifer), the Arapahoe aquifer, the Denver aquifer, and the Dawson aquifer (the uppermost aquifer). The Laramie-Fox Hills aquifer, which is the subject of this report, underlies the entire area of the basin in east-central Colorado (index map, fig. 1) and is an important source of water for residents in the northern Denver suburban area and in the rural areas of eastern Jefferson, Arapahoe, and Elbert Counties, Adams County, and southern Weld and El Paso Counties. About 90 percent of the estimated 1,700 wells completed in the aquifer supply water to residents and livestock. The remaining wells supply water for commercial and industrial use and limited irrigation of commercial crops.
