The articles are arranged alphabetically because of the diverse aspects in style and subject matter. A comprehensive list of references was forwarded to Gas Research Institute to avoid duplication of bibliographic effort and because I have been unable to unscramble Russian references to the satisfaction of our editors.</p><p><u>The workshop on Clathrates in NPRA</u>: The workshop was convened in Menlo Park on July 16-17, 1979, to review our \"knowledge of clathrates and to help develop background for ONPRA 1 s program on clathrates. Speakers were invited to discuss clathrates or some aspect of the physical or chemical relations of clathrates. The letters of invitation, schedule of talks, list of attendees, and a list of workers interested in clathrates are inserted, although the procedure is unusual because these define the scope and objectives of the meetings.</p><p><u>Conclusions from the meeting</u>: Conclusions of the discussions are: (a) very little is known about in situ clathrates, (b) our ability to identify in situ clathrates while drilling is poor, (c) the engineering of ONPRA wells is not conductive to the study of clathrates because of the large holes drilled, and (d) ONPRA could justify only limited investigations of clathrates. The attendees unanimously agreed that the next step to be taken by ONPRA should be to examine the wire-line logs and drilling records of NPRA wells to identify probable zones of natural occurring gas hydrates (clathrates). The atttendees stressed the need for more accurate data on natural thermoclines and additional compositional analyses of gases encountered in NPRA wells in order to more accurately define the P/T fields of natural clathrates of NPRA. The major categories of parameters analyzed are field measurements, physical characteristics, macronutrients (carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus), major ions, trace elements, and algae.</p><p>Chemical data for bulk-precipitation stations within and adjacent to the East Everglades are also given. The parameters analyzed include macronutrients, major ions, and trace elements. The period of record for these stations is October 1977 through April 1980.</p><p>Bottom material at the canal and marsh stations was collected twice during the investigation. In addition, the late Cenozoic stratigraphy has been modified, chiefly on the basis of radiometric dates of volcanic rocks by U.S. Geological Survey personnel and others. The Hot Springs Mountains are in the western part of the Basin and Range province, which is characterized by east-west crustal extension and associated normal faulting. In the surrounding Trinity, West Humboldt, Stillwater, and Desert Mountains, Cenozoic rocks overlie ' basement ' rocks of the Paleozoic and Mesozoic age. A similar relation is inferred in the Hot Springs Mountains. Folding and faulting have taken place from the late Tertiary to the present. These wells are strategically located so as to intercept groundwater enroute through the Memphis Sand from the outcrop-recharge area. Although water quality analyses are available for many wells in the shallow water-table aquifer, no specific investigation has been made to characterize the quality of the water in this aquifer from which the Memphis Sand also receives part of its recharge. This investigation is to determine the chemical character of groundwater in the shallow water-table aquifer at selected localities in the Memphis area. Methods used to install eight shallow wells at abandoned dump sites containing chemical and/or industrial waste are described. Water samples from the eight shallow wells and two deep wells in the Memphis Sand were collected and analyzed. Results of the analysis are presented and the locations of the wells and dumps are shown on maps. The hydrologic units of this mass vary in thickness, lateral extent, lithology, and water-bearing characteristics. Some of the units act as aquifers, whereas other units act as confining layers. The entire sediment wedge is almost an independent and isolated hydrologic system. Components of the long-term hydrologic budget for the Coastal Plain are precipitation, streamflow, and water loss. Under natural conditions, average precipitation is about 44 inches per year; while streamflow and water loss are about 20 and 24 inches per year, respectively. More than 75 percent of the streamflow in the Coastal Plain is derived from ground-water runoff. Some activities of man have modified the natural hydrologic cycle in the Coastal Plain. The primary activity affecting the system has been the withdrawal of ground water. Major changes in the flow patterns of water in several aquifers have been recognized during the past few decades partially as a result of increasing ground-water withdrawal. Where head gradients are large enough, water can be induced to flow from adjacent surface-water bodies or through confining beds. Induced recharge from the Delaware River to the Potomac-Raritan-Magothy aquifer system is occurring as a result of pumping stresses in the outcrop area of the aquifer. Recharge from the river to the aquifer from Salem to Burlington County was estimated to be about 113 cubic feet per second in 1978. The large sand waves are found on the bank crest where the surface tidal currents are strongest, and are bordered, north and south, by areas of small sand waves and/or megaripples, formed where tidal currents are moderate in strength. Featureless sea floor is found farthest from the bank crest where surface tidal currents are weakest.</p><p>Bed-form asymmetry and surface-sediment texture have been used to infer bedload transport paths on the bank. In the large sand-wave area, bed forms converge on linear northwest-striking ridges from both sides implying erosion from the troughs and growth of the ridges. The asymmetry of the small sand waves along the south side of the bank indicates that sand is also transported southward away from the bank. Though the bed-form asymmetry of megaripples could not be determined in this study, the occurrence of megaripples between the sand-wave provinces and areas of featureless sea floor suggests a decreasing effectiveness of sand transport away from the bank crest.
