Viewpoints from these three major areas of concern are not always compatible, yet the ecological nature of disease makes it essential that each is recognized and understood. Within wildlife agencies, resistance or apathy toward controlling wildlife disease arises because: (1) seldom is this action initiated primarily for the direct benefit of wildlife, (2) the action may be at the direct expense of wildlife, (3) there has been little to demonstrate that wildlife diseases can be controlled in free-living wild populations, and (4) the role of disease in the population dynamics of wildlife species has not been adequately documented and, as a result, the importance of many diseases has not been ascertained.

In addition to knowing better the effects of disease on the population dynamics of wildlife species, it is essential to investigate chemical-microbial and chemical-parasitic interactions. Greater efforts must be made to prevent the introduction of disease into wildlife populations and to control disease when it occurs. Although management of wildlife populations often parallels intensive agricultural operations, knowledge of animal husbandry and associated disease problems in domestic animals has not been adequately utilized. As a result, disease problems are created that might otherwise be avoided or reduced in magnitude. If we are to be successful in controlling diseases of wildlife, each of us must translate his knowledge into forms that will utilize differing viewpoints in the resolution of common problems.
","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Wildlife diseases","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":12,"text":"Conference publication"},"conferenceTitle":"Third International Wildlife Disease Conference","conferenceDate":"1975","conferenceLocation":"Munich, Germany","language":"English","publisher":"Springer","publisherLocation":"New York, Ny","doi":"10.1007/978-1-4757-1656-6_3","usgsCitation":"Friend, M., 1976, Wildlife diseases: philosophical considerations, chap. of Wildlife diseases, p. 7-18, https://doi.org/10.1007/978-1-4757-1656-6_3.","productDescription":"12 p.","startPage":"7","endPage":"18","costCenters":[{"id":456,"text":"National Wildlife Health Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":127757,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e0e4b07f02db5e3fdf","contributors":{"editors":[{"text":"Page, L.A.","contributorId":113474,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Page","given":"L.A.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":504630,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":1}],"authors":[{"text":"Friend, M. 0000-0002-2882-3629","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2882-3629","contributorId":82634,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Friend","given":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":296192,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

It also contains significant flood data and related information for many gaged sites on Montana streams. Frequency curves are provided for 442 gaged sites as defined by log-Pearson Type III analysis. To allow estimates at ungaged sites, mathematical equations relate the 2-, 5-, 10-, 25-, 50-, and 100-year flood magnitudes to basin characteristics. Drainage area, main channel slope, and mean annual precipitation were found to be the most significant estimating variables. Equations presented are limited to use on streams with drainage areas from about 0.1 to 2,600 square miles (0.3 to 6,700 square kilometres), with slope from about 5 to 1,200 feet per mile (1.5 to 366 metres per kilometre), and with precipitation from 10 to 100 inches (250 to 2,500 millimetres). \r\n\r\nNomographs provide a simple graphical means of solving the estimating relations, and illustrative examples are presented.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr75650","usgsCitation":"Johnson, M.V., and Omang, R.J., 1976, A method for estimating A magnitude-4.7 earthquake occurred at a depth of 5 km in the centre of the gap on October 3, 1973. The sequence of immediate aftershocks usually accompanying shallow earthquakes of this magnitude in central California did not occur. A bridge crossing the reservoir near its southeast end has been severely deformed, apparently the result of tectonic creep on the Calaveras fault. The occurrence of creep and absence of small earthquakes along the Calaveras in the vicinity of the reservoir suggest a transition from stick slip to stable sliding, possibly brought about by increased pore pressure.
","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0013-7952(76)90025-9","issn":"00137952","usgsCitation":"Bufe, C., 1976, The Anderson Reservoir seismic gap - Induced aseismicity?: Engineering Geology, v. 10, no. 2-4, p. 255-262, https://doi.org/10.1016/0013-7952(76)90025-9.","productDescription":"8 p.","startPage":"255","endPage":"262","numberOfPages":"8","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":221787,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"10","issue":"2-4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505ba683e4b08c986b32119d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bufe, C. Less well known, but probably equally widespread are faulting and shallow seismicity attributable solely to fluid extraction, particularly in association with petroleum production. Two unequivocable examples of seismicity and faulting associated with fluid extraction in the United States are: The Goose Creek, Texas oil field event of 1925 (involving surface rupture); and the Wilmington, California oil field events (involving subsurface rupture) of 1947, 1949, 1951 (2), 1955, and 1961. Six additional cases of intensity I-VII earthquakes (M < 4.6) without reported faulting may be attributable to shallow production from other large oil and gas fields. In addition to these examples are thirteen cases of apparently aseismic surface rupture associated with production from California and Texas oil fields. Small earthquakes in the Eloy-Picacho area of Arizona may be attributable to withdrawal of groundwater, but their relation to widespread fissuring is enigmatic. The clearest example of extraction-induced seismicity outside of North America is the 1951 series of earthquakes associated with gas production from the Po River delta near Caviga, Italy. Faulting and seismicity associated with fluid extraction are attributed to differential compaction at depth caused by reduction of reservoir fluid pressure and attendant increase in effective stress. Surface and subsurface measurements and theoretical and model studies show that differential compaction leads not only to differential subsidence and centripetally-directed horizontal displacements, but to changes in both vertical- and horizontal-strain regimes. Study of well-documented examples indicates that the occurrence and nature of faulting and seismicity associated with compaction are functions chiefly of: (1) the pre-exploitation strain regime, and (2) the magnitude of contractional horizontal strain centered over the compacting materials relative to that of the surrounding annulus of extensional horizontal strain. The examples cited include natural systems strained only by extraction of fluids, as well as some subsequently subjected to injection. Faulting and seismicity have accompanied both decrease and subsequent increase of fluid pressures; reversal of fluid-pressure decline by injection may enhance the likelihood of subsurface faulting and seismicity due chiefly to earlier fluid pressure reduction. A consistent common denominator appears to be continuing compaction at depth; the relative effects of fluid extraction followed by injection are not easily separated.
","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0013-7952(76)90017-X","issn":"00137952","usgsCitation":"Yerkes, R.F., and Castle, R.O., 1976, Seismicity and faulting attributable to fluid extraction: Engineering Geology, v. 10, no. 2-4, p. 151-167, https://doi.org/10.1016/0013-7952(76)90017-X.","productDescription":"17 p.","startPage":"151","endPage":"167","numberOfPages":"17","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":220963,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"10","issue":"2-4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505b8b8ce4b08c986b317903","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Yerkes, R. This great rupture in the Earth's crust rivals the San Andreas fault in California; it is long (approximately 900 kilometers), complex, and possibly has a lateral displacement of hundreds of kilometers similar to that on the San Andreas fault. The Soviet geologist V. S. Burtman suggested that right-lateral offset of 250 kilometers has occurred, citing a shift of Devonian rocks as evidence (fig. 3). By no means do all Soviet geologists agree. Some hold the view that there is no lateral displacement along the Talas-Fergana fault and that the anomalous distribution of Paleozoic rocks is a result of the original position of deposition.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","usgsCitation":"Wallace, R.E., 1976, The Talas-Fergana Fault, Kirghiz and Kazakh, USSR: Earthquake Information Bulletin (USGS), v. 8, no. 4, p. 4-13.","productDescription":"10 p.","startPage":"4","endPage":"13","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":314829,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan ","otherGeospatial":"Talas-Fergana Fault","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              71.630859375,\n              48.80686346108517\n            ],\n            [\n              86.8798828125,\n              42.61779143282346\n            ],\n            [\n              91.2744140625,\n              41.80407814427234\n            ],\n            [\n              92.2412109375,\n              43.229195113965005\n            ],\n            [\n              83.5400390625,\n              48.80686346108517\n            ],\n            [\n              74.619140625,\n              50.401515322782366\n            ],\n            [\n              71.630859375,\n              48.80686346108517\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"8","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"56a7556ee4b0b28f1184d896","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wallace, R. The main shock on March 27, 1975, was the strongest in the United States since the 1971 San Fernando Valley, Calif., event and was reported in newspapers across the country.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S Geological Survey","usgsCitation":"Platt, L., 1976, Geologic mapping and earthquakes in southeastern Idaho: Earthquake Information Bulletin (USGS), v. 8, no. 5, p. 8-12.","productDescription":"5 p.","startPage":"8","endPage":"12","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":318585,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Idaho","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -112.642822265625,\n              42.309815415686664\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.54693603515625,\n              42.282389042899574\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.56478881835938,\n              41.99726342796974\n            ],\n            [\n              -112.68264770507812,\n              42.00338672135348\n            ],\n            [\n              -112.642822265625,\n              42.309815415686664\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"8","issue":"5","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"56dabfdee4b015c306f84c99","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Platt, L.B.","contributorId":48633,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Platt","given":"L.B.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":621965,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

This amount is roughly equivalent to man's present gross energy consumption rate. A sub-seafloor geothermal reservoir, to be exploitable under future economic conditions, will have to be hot, porous, permeable, large, shallow, and near an energy-deficient, populated land mass. Furthermore, the energy must be recoverable using technology achievable at a competitive cost and numerous environmental, legal and institutional problems will have to be overcome. The highest-temperature reservoirs should be found adjacent to the zones of the seafloor extension or volcanism that are subject to high sedimentation rates. The relatively impermeable sediments reduce hydrothermal-discharge flow rates, forcing the heat to be either conducted away or released by high-temperature fluids, both of which lead to reservoir temperatures that can exceed 300??C. There is evidence that the oceanic crust is quite permeable and porous and that it was amenable to deep (3-5 km) penetration by seawater at least some time in the early stages of its evolution. Most of the heat escapes far from land, but there are notable exceptions. For example, in parts of the Gulf of California, thermal gradients in the bottom sediments exceed 1??C/m. In the coastal areas of the Gulf of California, where electricity and fresh water are at a premium, this potential resource lies in shallow water (< 200 m) and within sight of land. Other interesting areas include the Sea of Japan, the Sea of Okhotsk and the Andaman Sea along the margins of the western Pacific, the Tyrrhenian Sea west of Italy, and the southern California borderland and west flank of the Juan de Fuca Ridge off the west coast of the United States. Many questions remain to be answered about the physical and other characteristics of these systems before they can be considered a viable resource. Until several of the most promising areas are carefully defined and drilled, the problem will remain unresolved. ?? 1976.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Journal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","issn":"03770273","usgsCitation":"Williams, D., 1976, Submarine geothermal resources: Journal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research, v. 1, no. 1, p. 85-100.","startPage":"85","endPage":"100","numberOfPages":"16","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":220811,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"1","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505b9d24e4b08c986b31d67a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Williams, D.L.","contributorId":7681,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Williams","given":"D.L.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":360150,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
