Emittance spectra in the 7.5 μm to 14 μm wavelength region and chemical compositions of 26 igneous rocks are reported. Experimental measurements on the rocks were made under simulated daytime field conditions. Some surface silicate contaminants, such as clayey silt, significantly altered the spectral emittance of a fresh sample, whereas, for these samples, hydrous and anhydrous ferric oxide weathering products did not mask important silicate spectral information. In the 11.75 μm to 13.75 μm wavelength region, the mean emittance of all the silicate samples was0.956 ± 0.008, except for periodtite, which had an average emittance of 0.895. This region of uniform emittance should be useful in remote sensing experiments for the separation of the effects of temperature and chemical composition on the spectral emittance of silicate rocks.

Within a swarm of late middle Eocene subsilicic-alkalic diatremes, one diatreme 270 by 370 m and an associated dike contain common xenoliths of granulite and rare xenoliths of spinel peridotite and garnet peridotite. Six garnet lherzolite xenoliths have been found and these show a range of textures. Four are granular, and two are intensely sheared. Phlogopite is absent from the intensely sheared xenoliths and is thought to be primary in part in the granular xenoliths. Estimated temperatures and depths of equilibration of xenolith pyroxenes range from 920°C, 106 km (32 kbar) to 1315°C, 148 km (47 kbar). The xenoliths show increasing amounts of deformation with greater inferred depths of origin. The temperature-depth points suggest a segment of an Eocene geotherm for Montana which is similar in slope to the steep portion of the pyroxene-determined Lesotho geotherm (BOYD and NIXON, this volume) and is considerably steeper than typical calculated shield and continental geotherms at present. The steep trend could be a result of plate-tectonic shearing and magma ascension within an Eocene low-velocity zone. Preservation of intensely sheared textures requires rapid transport of material from about 150 km depth during active deformation of relatively dry rock. The occurrence of monticellite peridotite in this kimberlite diatreme suggests that magmas which crystallized to monticellite peridotite at relatively shallow depth could be one of the primitive types of kimberlite magma.

Ultramafic xenoliths in basalts from the western United States are divided into Al-augite and Cr-diopside groups. The Al-augite group is characterized by Al, Ti-rich augites, comparatively Fe-rich olivine and orthopyroxene, and Al-rich spinel, the Cr-diopside group by Cr-rich clinopyroxene and spinel and by Mg-rich olivine and pyroxenes. Both groups have a wide range of subtypes, but the Al-augite group is dominated by augite-rich varieties, and the Cr-diopside group by olivine-rich lherzolites.

This report describes methods for estimating flood-peak discharges having 2- to 50-year recurrence intervals on North Dakota streams draining less than 100 square miles ( 259 square kilometres). For gaged sites, frequency estimates are provided directly. For ungaged sites, flood peaks are estimated from multiple-regression equations using drainage-area size and, in two regions, soil-infiltration index as estimating variables.  Nomographs provide simple solutions for the equations for flood-peak discharges having recurrence intervals of 10, 25, and 50 years. The methods described are not applicable to streams draining urban areas or basins affected by man-made regulation.

Information is also provided on the maximum flood magnitude experienced.

Water from California streams has been analyzed for concentrations of selected chemical constituents since the early 1950's. This summary includes about 1,200 water years of data from 88 sampling sites on 66 streams.

Results of this summary show that about 80 percent of the sites had a mean dissolved-solids concentration of 400 milligrams per litre or less. All the sites that had mean concentrations ranging from 601 to 800 milligrams per litre were in either the South Coastal or Central Coastal subregions.

Results of regression analysis between specific conductance and calcium, magnesium, sodium, bicarbonate, dissolved solids, and hardness usually indicated a high percentage of explained variance. Other constituents, such as potassium, sulfate, chloride, and particularly nitrate, were not as frequently highly associated with specific conductance.

At sites where the water discharge was highly regulated, the variation in specific conductance that was explained as a function of discharge ranged from 0 to more than 90 percent. Whereas at the unregulated sites, the explained variance ranged from 50 to more than 90 percent.

The Tehama-Colusa Canal Service Area is in the northwestern part of the Sacramento Valley, in parts of Yolo, Colusa, Glenn, and Tehama Counties. The area includes 450 square miles (1,160 square kilometres). The boundaries are: West, the eastern slopes of the Coast Ranges; north, Elder Creek; northeast, the Sacramento River and the Glenn-Colusa Canal; east and southeast, the Colusa Basin Drainage Canal; and south, Oat Creek.

Between April and July 1974, 393 wells were selectively canvassed and between August and October 1974, water samples were collected for chemical analysis from 222 wells of the 393 wells canvassed. Field determinations of alkalinity, conductance, pH, and temperature were made on the site at the time of sampling. The samples were then field prepared for shipment and analysis for individual constituents at the Geological Survey Central Laboratory, Salt Lake City, Utah. Descriptive data for water wells are listed in table 1, chemical data in tables 2 and 3, and the location of these wells is shown on maps 1-28.

High-altitude thermal-infrared images, taken at various times of the day over the Front Range and adjacent plains in Colorado, display many linear and circular topographic features. These features are enhanced by thermal shading effects and commonly are better displayed than in photographs. Comparison with geologic maps of a control area in the Front Range shows that most lineaments drawn from the thermal images represent geologic features, principally faults. A previously unobserved circular feature at the Central City-Idaho Springs mineral district bounds most of the area of gold mineralization; it is a topographic delineation of the most intensively altered ground in the district and may reflect extremely subtle structure related to the presence of an unexposed intrusive body. Lineaments in the plains probably mark subtle structural trends related to the Denver basin and to folds not otherwise expressed at the surface. © 1975 Geological Society of America.

Approximately 8,000 chemical analyses of water produced from formations of several geologic ages in south eastern New Mexico and western Texas are tabulated by both geographic location and geologic formation.

Empirical and mathematical relationships between (1) the dissolved solids and the measured and computed resistivity of water, the chloride-ion concentration and the density, and (2) the concentration of chloride-ion and the density and the resistivity of water, were established. Resistivities of water computed following a method developed by Moore, Szasz, and Whitney (1966) using the concentration of the six most common constituents dissolved in natural water correlate favorably with the measured resistivities of natural water.

The water analyses were obtained chiefly from oil companies and oil-service companies operating in the western part of the Permian basin. The data were associated with the proper well by searching location, operator, and reference number cross indexes prepared from the Permian Basin Well Data System files. The cross indexes were determined to be essential to efficient data processing operations. After preliminary screening for nonrepresentative data, all data were indexed to the Permian Basin Well Data System magnetic tape file scout records by the unique reference number. The data were then coded, punched into tabulating cards, and stored on magnetic tape for computer operations.

Data verification steps not normally required when using data received from a laboratory following standardized analytical techniques on samples obtained under standardized and controlled procedures were performed in order to upgrade reliability of the information. Data errors detected included poorly located or identified samples; mistakes including reproducing, or key punching; laboratory errors; inconsistent reporting; and nonrepresentative or contaminated samples.

Most of the terrane in the quadrangle slopes gently westward across broad expanses of pediment, from prominent mountainous north-south ridges in the east to the alluvial and eolian sand-covered plains of Wadi Bishah. Other than the widespread surficial deposits, the quadrangle is underlain by Precambrian metasedimentary, metavolcanic, and intrusive granitic to gabbroic rocks. \r\n\r\nParaschist, paragneiss, and amphibolite of the Hali Group, the oldest rocks of the quadrangle, were derived from pelitic sediments, quartzite, limestone, and mafic to felsic volcanic rocks. The rocks were intensely deformed and regionally metamorphosed to the almandine-amphibolite facies during a long and complex period of Precambrian geological events prior to deposition of the rocks of the Halaban Group. Granodiorite gneiss, the most abundant rock in the quadrangle, is intrusive into and tectonically deformed with the Hall rocks. Relatively late during Precambrian time sedimentary and volcanic rocks of the Halaban Group were unconformably deposited on the Hali and granodiorite gneiss. About three years ago, at the initiation of a major effort by the U.S. Geological Survey into studies of geothermal systems, a decision was made to evaluate the audio-magnetotelluric, AMT, technique for this application. At that time we had had no real experience with the method nor any equipment. Some prior work by Lebel [1971], and Slankis and others [1972], suggested that field operations might be slow and difficult reducing the advantages of the method. A cautious approach was used in developing equipment and field techniques until some experience was gained with the method. As no commercial equipment was available, design and fabrication of the AMT equipment to cover the frequency range 8 Hz to 18,600 Hz was done in-house. Because of the nature of the method, our approach has been to use AMT surveys for reconnaissance exploration and to follow up with other electrical methods in interesting areas. In this paper some of the results of our research are shown to illustrate the effectiveness of the technique.

A gas chromatographic method for the analysis of both water and soil-core material for TNT and RDX is presented. The explosives may be determined to 0.01 microgram per litre in 1-litre water samples and 0.2 micrograms per kilogram in 50 grams of soil.
