The aquifers are composed of permeable materials including sand, sandstone, limestone, or combinations of these sediments. Results of phase one, a reconnaissance of water quality at 150 sites, indicated that acid mine drainage generally occurred where abandoned drift or strip mines were located, whereas areas characterized by reclaimed or active strip mines showed few instances of acid drainage. Phase two was a detailed study of four small basins: One contained abandoned drift mines; the second, abandoned strip mines; the third, reclaimed strip mines; the last, active strip mines. Results of phase two were similar to those of phase one. These data can be used in making rational decisions in formulating effective flood-plain regulations that would minimize flood problems in the Tallaboa Valley.

The Tallaboa Valley (fig. 1) lies on the southwestern coast of Puerto Rico about 12 km (7.5 mi) west of the city of Ponce. The climate is semiarid with a mean annual precipitation of about 1,020 mm (40 in). It is a relatively small valley which until the late fifties was dedicated mainly to the product ion of sugarcane. Since then, the economy started changing from agriculture to industry. At present the lower part of the valley is completely industrialized. The upper part of the valley is used for agriculture--mostly as pastureland. The reach from Highway 132 downstream to the new Highway 2 is mainly agricultural with a few scattered communities. The lower part of the valley that includes the area from the Highway 2 bridge to the mouth is covered with heavy industry concerned with the refinement of oil, and associated industries.

The continuous growth of industry and consequently of the urban area of Peñuelas has encouraged growth onto the
flood plain. The study area is subject to flooding by the Rio Tallaboa and the Rio Guayanes, its main tributary. The Rio Guayanes is the- cause of flooding in the urban area of Penuelas, encompassing the reach from the northern edge of town downstream to Highway 132 where it joins the Rio Tallaboa.

Data are generally referred to in SI (International System) units followed by corresponding inch-pound units in parentheses. The principal coal seams mined are the Van Lear in Johnson County and the Alma in Martin County. Coal mines that contained water were located by field inventory and coal-mine maps.\r\n\r\nThe principal factors that affect the occurrence of water in coal mines are the size of the recharge area overlying the mine, the intensity and duration of precipitation, and the altitude of the mine relative to that of the nearest perennial stream.\r\n\r\nTen above-drainage mines (that is, mines at higher elevations than that of the nearest perennial stream) are considered potential sources of water. Discharge from these mines ranged from 12 to 1,700 gallons per minute. The highest sustained discharge from a mine ranged from 750 to 1,200 gallons per minute.\r\n\r\nThe water in coal mines is part of the hydrologic system and varies seasonally with precipitation. Annual discharge from most above-drainage mines ranged from 3 to 10 percent of annual precipitation on the 1and-surface area above the mine.\r\n\r\nEight below-drainage mines are considered potential sources of water. Two were test-pumped at rates of 560 to 620 gallons per minute for as long as 6 hours. After test pumping the Warfield Mining No. 1 mine during September 1977 and March 1978, the recovery (or recharge) rates were significantly different. In September, the recharge rate was about 1,150 gallons per minute, but in March the recharge rate was 103,500 gallons per minute. This difference reflects the seasonal variations in the amount of water available to the ground-water system. Estimates of water stored in below-drainage mines ranged from 22 to 1,462 million gallons. This storage represents a safety factor sufficient to provide water through periods of limited recharge to the mine.\r\n\r\nMost mine water is of the calcium magnesium sulfate type. In general, water from below-drainage mines had lower concentrations of dissolved constituents and higher pH than water from mines above drainage. The hardness of water ranged from soft to very hard and pH ranged -from 3.1 to 8.0 units. Dissolved iron ranged from 0.01 to 64 milligrams per liter. Phenol concentrations in water from eight coal mines ranged from 0 to 5 micrograms per liter.\r\n\r\nThere seems to be a significant difference in the chemical quality of water from above- and below-drainage mines. The concentration of most constituents was lower in water from below-drainage mines than it was from above-drainage mines.\r\n\r\nThe better quality water from below-drainage mines may reflect (1) lower mineralization resulting from less atmospheric oxygen available to react with pyrite or, (2) the result of sampling only the upper zones of water in below-drainage mines where the water has been diluted by less mineralized surface water or inflow or recharge.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"Geological Survey (U.S.)","doi":"10.3133/wri81690","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Kentucky Geological Survey and the University of Kentucky","usgsCitation":"Mull, D.S., Cordivio1a, S., and Risser, D.W., 1981, Availability and Quality of Water from Underground Coal Mines in Johnson and Martin Counties, Kentucky (WRI/OFR 81-690): U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 81-690, viii, 55 p.; Plates, https://doi.org/10.3133/wri81690.","productDescription":"viii, 55 p.; Plates","costCenters":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":124648,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1981/0690/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":91361,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1981/0690/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"scale":"48000","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -83,37.666666666666664 ], [ -83,38 ], [ -82.58333333333333,38 ], [ -82.58333333333333,37.666666666666664 ], [ -83,37.666666666666664 ] ] ] } } ] }","edition":"WRI/OFR 81-690","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a85e4b07f02db64d4be","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Mull, D. A storm-sewer inlet to Alimagnet Lake was also sampled during two storms in 1978. The 1976-77 drought caused a more noticeable effect on the quality of the lakes than any other factor. Chloride concentrations were 10 to 15 milligrams per liter before the drought, but increased 2 to 4 times during the drought. Dissolved solids reacted similarly. Dissolved oxygen and pH were governed mainly by biological activity. In February 1977, dissolved-oxygen concentration was less than 0.5 milligrams per liter in the three lakes. Ratios between mean total nitrogen and mean total phosphorus ranged from 22:1 to 26:1. Trophic-state indices indicate that the lakes are eutrophic. Blue-green algae dominated the phytoplankton populations. Storms sampled at a storm-sewer inlet to Alimagnet Lake showed higher concentrations of chromium, copper, nickel, and zinc than of lead, arsenic, cadmium, and mercury. Total phosphorus for the September 1978 storm had a concentration of 1.7 milligrams per liter, which means that approximately 29 pounds entered the lake during the 5.5-hour sampling period.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"St. Paul, MN","doi":"10.3133/wri8140","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the City of Apple Valley, Minnesota","usgsCitation":"Have, M., Payne, G.A., and Ayers, M.A., 1981, Water quality of Alimagnet, Farquar, and Long Lakes in Apple Valley, Minnesota: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 81-40, iv, 38 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri8140.","productDescription":"iv, 38 p.","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":392,"text":"Minnesota Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":158801,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1981/0040/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":95645,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1981/0040/report.pdf","size":"2132","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Minnesota","city":"Apple Valley","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -93.24766159057617,\n 44.75404787477275\n ],\n [\n -93.25796127319336,\n 44.75356026127114\n ],\n [\n -93.25830459594727,\n 44.73734476963528\n ],\n [\n -93.25521469116211,\n 44.73429623703402\n ],\n [\n -93.2516098022461,\n 44.73258898857743\n ],\n [\n -93.2516098022461,\n 44.71709950382894\n ],\n [\n -93.1534194946289,\n 44.717343464865316\n ],\n [\n -93.1541061401367,\n 44.7751332217051\n ],\n [\n -93.24800491333008,\n 44.77403648591524\n ],\n [\n -93.24766159057617,\n 44.75404787477275\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a07e4b07f02db5f9a26","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Have, M.R.","contributorId":79115,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Have","given":"M.R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":198379,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Payne, G. The quantity and quality of streamflow were affected mostly by soils, slopes, and land use. Average annual precipitation during the study (196476) was 35.12 inches, or 2.3 percent greater than the long-term (1929-76) average. The average streamflow in Soldier Creek at Topeka, Kansas, was 23 percent greater than the long-term average.

In general, frequency curves of annual peak discharges compared poorly with curves from statewide relations due to the absence of extremely low peaks during the short period. A comparison of low-flow frequency for drainage areas of more than 100 square miles indicated that reasonable results will not be obtained for estimates of 7-day and 30-day average annual minimum discharges by linear extrapolation to basins of less than 100 square miles. Comparison of flow-duration curves confirms the extrapolation for basins of less than 100 square miles, although the percentage duration of mean flow is variable.

Water surveys showed that calcium, bicarbonate, and sulfate were the predominant ions and dissolved solids were derived mostly from limestones and shales. Suspended sediment at gaged sites ranged from 9.94 to 848 tons per day; yield per unit area increased significantly between sites due to changes in hillside slopes and land use.

","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri818","usgsCitation":"Carswell, W., 1981, Selected hydrologic relationships for Soldier Creek, northeastern Kansas: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 81-8, 68 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri818.","productDescription":"68 p.","numberOfPages":"71","costCenters":[{"id":353,"text":"Kansas Water Science Center","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":349788,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1981/0008/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":157849,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1981/0008/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Kansas","otherGeospatial":"Soldier Creek","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -96.05072021484375,\n 39.04265287290379\n ],\n [\n -95.67169189453125,\n 39.04265287290379\n ],\n [\n -95.67169189453125,\n 39.66914219401813\n ],\n [\n -96.05072021484375,\n 39.66914219401813\n ],\n [\n -96.05072021484375,\n 39.04265287290379\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49d6e4b07f02db5ddf31","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Carswell, William J. The saturated thickness of these deposits averages 175 feet and ranges from 85 to 500 feet. Where present, the silt and clay bed confines the underlying aquifer. The confining bed is absent in the area underlying the landfill and part of the airport. Model-simulated streamflow reductions in Christiana Creek for these pumpings were 9, 12, and 23 percent of base flow, respectively. The model-simulated, steady-state water-level maps for the 7.5- and 10-million-gallons-per-day pumping experiments indicated that these pumpings would not draw water from the land-fill area to the pumping center at the airport.
