About 20,000-25,000 chemical analyses of sedimentary rocks in the United States have been published. This report brings together 2,312 of these analyses from California and Hawaii. \r\n\r\nThe samples are arranged by general lithologic characteristics and locality. Indexes of stratigraphy, rock name, commercial uses, and minor elements are provided. \r\n\r\nThe sedimentary rocks are classified into groups and into categories according to the chemical analyses. The groups (A through F2) are defined by a system similar to that proposed by Brian Mason in 1952, in which the main parameters are the three major components of sedimentary rocks: (1) uncombined silica, (2) clay (R203 ? 3Si02 ? nH20), and (3) calcium-magnesium carbonate. The categories are based on the degree of admixture of these three major components with other components, such as sulfate, phos- phate, and iron oxide. Common-rock, mixed-rock, and special-rock categories apply to rocks consisting of 85 percent or more, 50-84 percent, and less than 49 percent, respectively, of the three major components combined. \r\n\r\nMaps show distribution of sample localities by States; triangular diagrams show the lithologic characteristics and classification groups. Cumulative-frequency curves of each constituent in each classification group of the common-rock and mixed-rock categories are also included. \r\n\r\nThe numerous analyses may not adequately represent the geochemical nature of the rock types and formations of the region because of sampling bias. Daily streamflow during 1942-77 was modeled for the following reaches: Susquehanna River--Unadilla to Conklin, Conklin to Vestal, and Vestal to Waverly; Chenango River--Sherburne to Greene, and Greene to Chenango Forks; Tioughnioga River--Cortland to Itaska. The models were developed with convolution techniques and were based on the unit-response method of flow routing, assuming the diffusion analogy and using multilinearization. Overall accuracy of the models, as measured by the average difference between observed and simulated daily flows over the base period, was within the stated accuracy of published gaging-station records. As an example of one application of the models, hypothetical releases from East Sidney Lake and Whitney Point Lake during low flow were traced downstream to the Waverly gaging station at the lower end of the area studied. The leading edge of the East Sidney release arrived in 4 days, and the full release arrived in 6 days. The leading edge of the Whitney Point release arrived in 1 day, and the full release arrived in 3 days. Only earthquakes located within the borders of the state of New York are listed. Many earthquakes actually located in Canada were felt in localities within New York and are listed in the literature as a New York event.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Studies in the United States (Algermissen, 1969) which have been recompiled and updated through 1977. &nbsp;These data have been reexamined which resulted in some revisions of epicenters and intensities as well as assignment of intensities to earthquakes that previously had none assigned. &nbsp;Intensity values were updated from new and additional data sources that were not available at the time of original compilation. &nbsp;Some epicenters were relocated on the basis of new information. &nbsp;The data shown in table 1 and 2 are estimates of the most accurate epicenter, magnitude, and intensity of each earthquake, on the basis of historical and current information. &nbsp;Some of the aftershocks from large earthquakes are listed but are incomplete in many instances, especially The aquifer is under water-table conditions and in hydraulic contact with the river, so that pumping wells induces recharge from the river. Direct recharge to the aquifer from precipitation and runoff occurs throughout the valley floor. Chemical analyses since 1972 have indicated no water-quality deterioration from toxic substances, including pesticides. Geohydrologic conditions at each of the six well fields were evaluated to determine the feasibility of a monitoring system to provide warning of contamination before it reaches a pumping center. Potential contamination sources in the area are landfills, gravel pits, industrial sites, and transportation corridors. Only two of the well fields have wells that could be used for monitoring; at most sites, two or more wells would need to be installed to provide minimal means of detecting contaminants migrating toward a pumping center. Proper design of hydraulic structures and adequate flood-plain management depend on this information. Multiple-regression techniques were used to develop equations for estimating flood frequencies at ungaged sites.</p>\n<p>The State is divided into five areas and has equations developed for each area. These areas are based on areal factors determined from previous studies and physical basin characteristics. Significant characteristics in the equations are soil permeability, drainage area, slope, storage, forest cover, snowfall, precipitation intensity, and mean annual precipitation. Standard errors of estimate for the regression equations ranged from 23 to 38 percent.</p>\n<p>Annual flood peaks, basin characteristics, and flood-frequency values are presented in this report. Data from 184 gaging stations were used in the regression analysis, of which 20 had rainfall-runoff data collected. Long-term synthetic peaks were generated from the rainfall-runoff data and were weighted with the observed peak data to improve the flood-frequency distributions.</p>\n<p>A method to estimate flood-frequency values for regulated streams was developed by discharge-drainage area relationships.
