Detailed outcrop mapping in the western Sierra foothills of Amador County, Calif., has resulted in some major changes in the interpretation of stratigraphy and structure. The Amador Group was originally defined at its type locality on the south bank of the Cosumnes River in Amador County to include the Cosumnes Formation and the conformably overlying Logtown Ridge Formation, but the new data indicate that the lower boundary of the type Logtown Ridge should be located 600 m farther west (downsection) than originally designated and that this boundary is a fault. The strata that were originally called the Cosumnes Formation are part of a lithologically diverse assemblage of tectonically intermixed rocks that constitute a newly recognized melange and thus are not a formational rock-stratigraphic unit as the earlier workers believed. Thus, the names Cosumnes Formation and Amador Group are both inappropriate in their type area and are abandoned.
The Logtown Ridge Formation is here divided into four members, some of which cross what earlier was considered to be a formational boundary of the Logtown Ridge with overlapping pyroclastic strata. The outcrop mapping requires additional changes, although of lesser importance, in the identification and correlation of other Mesozoic rocks in Amador County.
The newly recognized melange forms a 4-km-wide belt underlying the Logtown Ridge Formation. In addition to the type section of the abandoned Cosumnes Formation and scattered fault-bounded blocks of strata of Cosumnes lithology, the melange comprises rocks heretofore mapped as \"western belt of Calaveras Formation,\" considered to be of Paleozoic age. Single clasts of this huge tectonic breccia range from a few centimeters to a few kilometers in maximum dimension. Distinctive strata are generally disrupted, and pervasive shearing is common. In the absence of fossils, no age of original deposition can be assigned to any clast or matrix of the melange, but on the basis of indirect structural evidence, the intermixing that formed the melange probably took place during the Late Jurassic or before, and therefore the now sheared and faulted strata must originally have been at least this old.
Available data are ambiguous but suggest that rocks were intermixed to form the melange when the strata were horizontal or nearly so. Similarly, the overlying Logtown Ridge and Mariposa Formations were faulted when these rocks were essentially horizontal. The entire section was subsequently tilted to its present, nearly vertical position.
Traditional syntheses of the tectonic history of the Sierra foothills argue that the faults there have always been steeply dipping. Although this may be true for some faults, the new interpretation suggests that most faulting occurred before the section was steeply tilted. Neither suggestion can yet be proved, but we maintain that the highly deformed rocks mapped in Amador County represent primarily the effects of subduction at a continental margin, possibly augmented by gravity tectonics in a trough of sediment accumulation there. On the basis of the ages of affected strata, this period of subduction was Late Jurassic but possibly began at an earlier time. If this interpretation of the melange in Amador County is correct, a belt of similarly deformed rocks should extend far beyond the limits of the study area.

aquifer. The program computes head changes in the confined aquifer and the rate and volume of water withdrawn from aquifer boundaries.
The program was used to model the sandstone aquifer underlying Dane County, Wisconsin. The aquifer was modeled as a confined aquifer recharged by leakage from the overlying upper aquifer. The physical properties of the aquifer system needed for the model were approximated using aquifer-test data and by matching drawdowns resulting from aquifer development through 1970 with draw-downs computed by the model.
The sandstone aquifer should be able to supply the water needs of Dane County well beyond 1990. Maximum regional drawdowns of approximately 40 feet (12 m) between 1970 and 1990 were computed by the model. This amount of additional drawdown would not seriously deplete the ground-water supply.

Minor amounts of it are produced together with tantalum from columbite-tantalite concentrates from pegmatites and placers adjacent to them, in the Sao Joao del Rei district in south-central Minas Gerais. All the niobium and tantalum produced in Brazil is exported. The only pyrochlore mined is from the Barreiro carbonatite deposit near Araxa in Minas Gerais where concentrates and ferroniobium are produced. Exploration work for pyrochlore and other mineral resources are being undertaken on other carbonatites, particularly at Catalao I in southeast Goias and at Tapira and Serra Negra in western Minas Gerais. Annual production and export from the Barreiro deposit are about 8,000 metric tons of pyrochlore concentrate containing about 60 percent Nb205 and about 2,700 metric tons of ferroniobium with 63 percent Nb2O5.\r\n\r\nThe annual production capacity of the Barreiro plant is 18,000 tons of concentrate and 4,000 tons of ferroniobium. Ore reserves of the Barreiro deposit in all categories are 380 million tons with percent Nb2O5. Annual production of tantalite-columbite from the Sao Joao del Rei district, most of which is exported to the United States, is about 290 tons, of which about 79 percent is tantalite and about percent is columbite. Water for municipal, industrial, and irrigation supplies generally can be obtained in limited quantities from the alluvial deposits in the stream valleys. Except for water in the alluvial deposits in the stream valleys and in the outcrop areas of the bedrock aquifers, the groundwater is generally of poor chemical quality. Owing to the generally poor chemical quality of water and low yields to wells, an increase in the use of ground water from the consolidated rocks is improbable.
The unconsolidated rocks in the Verdigris River basin receive about 166,000 acre-feet of recharge annually, and about 1 million acre-fee of water is in temporary storage in the deposits. In 1968 about 4,200 acre-feet of ground was withdrawn for all uses. About 800 acre-feet of ground and 5,000 acre-feet of surface water were pumped for irrigation of 5,300 acres of cropland. The total annual withdrawal of ground water for irrigation may be 2,000 acre-feet by the year 2000.

This area could contain from 0.3 to 1.4 billion barrels of oil and from 0.6 to 2.7 trillion cubic feet of natural gas depending upon the statistical confidence level indicated.
The known geology of this submerged area, is extrapolated to the offshore from onshore data. The sedimentary rocks are as old as Triassic and as young as Pleistocene. The Mesozoic strata include volcanic rocks, volcanoclastic and marine clastic sediments. Tertiary, rocks from which the oil and gas in Upper Cook Inlet are produced, consist of nonmarine conglomerate, sandstone, siltstone and coal. The potential objective section for oil and gas in this OCS area ranges from Middle Jurassic through the Tertiary.
The present structural configuration of this area is a northeast trending trough filled with Tertiary sediments. The trough is flanked by two major faults, the Bruin Bay fault on the northwest and the Border Ranges fault on the southeast. Between these faults is the OCS area containing anticlinal structures and faults which may be traps for hydrocarbons.
Potential geologic hazards are present in this area. It is an area of intense tectonism expressed as seismic activity (earthquakes) and volcanic eruptions which produce many natural disturbances including tsunamis. This distribution of soft sediment and other submarine features which relate to geologic hazards are only generally known.
