The Amador Group was originally defined at its type locality on the south bank of the Cosumnes River in Amador County to include the Cosumnes Formation and the conformably overlying Logtown Ridge Formation, but the new data indicate that the lower boundary of the type Logtown Ridge should be located 600 m farther west (downsection) than originally designated and that this boundary is a fault. The strata that were originally called the Cosumnes Formation are part of a lithologically diverse assemblage of tectonically intermixed rocks that constitute a newly recognized melange and thus are not a formational rock-stratigraphic unit as the earlier workers believed. Thus, the names Cosumnes Formation and Amador Group are both inappropriate in their type area and are abandoned.</p><p>The Logtown Ridge Formation is here divided into four members, some of which cross what earlier was considered to be a formational boundary of the Logtown Ridge with overlapping pyroclastic strata. The outcrop mapping requires additional changes, although of lesser importance, in the identification and correlation of other Mesozoic rocks in Amador County.</p><p>The newly recognized melange forms a 4-km-wide belt underlying the Logtown Ridge Formation. In addition to the type section of the abandoned Cosumnes Formation and scattered fault-bounded blocks of strata of Cosumnes lithology, the melange comprises rocks heretofore mapped as \"western belt of Calaveras Formation,\" considered to be of Paleozoic age. Single clasts of this huge tectonic breccia range from a few centimeters to a few kilometers in maximum dimension. Distinctive strata are generally disrupted, and pervasive shearing is common. In the absence of fossils, no age of original deposition can be assigned to any clast or matrix of the melange, but on the basis of indirect structural evidence, the intermixing that formed the melange probably took place during the Late Jurassic or before, and therefore the now sheared and faulted strata must originally have been at least this old.</p><p>Available data are ambiguous but suggest that rocks were intermixed to form the melange when the strata were horizontal or nearly so. Similarly, the overlying Logtown Ridge and Mariposa Formations were faulted when these rocks were essentially horizontal. The entire section was subsequently tilted to its present, nearly vertical position.</p><p>Traditional syntheses of the tectonic history of the Sierra foothills argue that the faults there have always been steeply dipping. Although this may be true for some faults, the new interpretation suggests that most faulting occurred before the section was steeply tilted. Neither suggestion can yet be proved, but we maintain that the highly deformed rocks mapped in Amador County represent primarily the effects of subduction at a continental margin, possibly augmented by gravity tectonics in a trough of sediment accumulation there. On the basis of the ages of affected strata, this period of subduction was Late Jurassic but possibly began at an earlier time. Since bedrock geologic features are frequently expressed in the topography the radar lends itself to geologic interpretation. \r\n\r\nThe radar was studied by comparisons with field mapped geologic data first at a scale of approximately 1:125,000 and then at a scale of 1:500,000. The larger scale comparison revealed that faults, minor faults, joint sets, bedding and foliation attitudes, lithology and lithologic contacts all have a topographic expression interpretable on the imagery. Surficial geologic features were far less visible on the imagery over most of the area studied. The smaller scale comparisons revealed a pervasive, near orthogonal fracture set cutting all types and ages of rock and trending roughly N40?E and N30?W. In certain places the strike of bedding and foliation attitudes and some lithologic Contacts were visible in addition to the fractures. \r\n\r\nFracturing in southern New England is apparently far more important than has been previously recognized. As development proceeds along the north slope of alaska, a knowledge of the potential drift trajectories of water, ice, sediment and pollutants will be needed. In an attempt to better define the probable paths and rates of transport, 4200 surface drift cards were dropped during the U.S. Coast Guard WEBSEC cruise of August and September, 1972. The results of this release are the subject of this report. Because the data presented here will be used primarily by those interested in solving problems of transport, the emphasis has been placed on data presentation rather than a detailed analysis of the circulation. However, only sphene is present in the lowerr grade blueschist assemblages. In many areas of the world these blueschists pass into, or are in fault contact with, higher grade glaucophane schists, rutile-bearing amphibolites, and eclogites. The origin of the rutile may be related to a prograde metamorphic reaction that involves the alteration of sphene to rutile, but few data are available to support this hypothesis. It seems more probable that the rutile crystallized directly from ilmenite or titanium-rich clinopyroxene and magnetite in basalts and gabbros during the conversion of these rocks to amphibolites and eclogites containing omphacite, amphibolite, and garnet. Rutile in the higher grade blueschists, regardless of its origin, is a potential titanium resource and is currently being mined from eclogite and glaucophane-eclogite rocks in the Soviet Union. The relationships between grades and tonnages are analyzed by examining the correlation coefficients of these variables. Conclusions reached include the following: (1) Geologic factors influencing tonnage of a particular deposit type are probably distinct from those influencing grade; (2) frequency distributions of tonnages and grades approximate lognormality, making it possible to predict probability of various tonnage-grade classes and to test correlation between variables; (3) no significant correlation was found between tonnage and grade for porphyry or strata-bound deposits; ( 4) significant negative correlation between tonnage and grade was found for the massive sulfide subset, probably reflecting a mixture of high-grade low-tonnage massive ores, low-grade high-tonnage stockwork, and disseminated ores characteristic of some massive sulfide deposits; (5) significant negative correlation was found between tonnage and grade for the mixture of deposit types in the whole sample.\r\n\r\nExtrapolation on the basis of the negative grade-tonnage correlation shown for the mixed population seems to imply the occurrence of large-tonnage very low grade deposits, which could be important in supplying future copper needs. This extrapolation is misleading, however, for both statistical and geological reasons.
