Problems related to development of the aquifer include maximum safe yield, local contamination, local salt-water intrusion, corrosiveness of the water, areas of high iron concentration, and increasing nitrate concentration. The city of Pensacola is seeking hydrologic information, including water-quality data, to plan for future expansion of the water-supply system.

This report summarizes the third year's findings of a 6-year study of the sand-and-gravel aquifer. Although the thickness of the aquifer locally exceeds 1,000 feet (300 metres) most of the clean sand layers are no more than 450 feet (140 metres) below land surface. The highest head is at the north edge of the area; the head is drawn down below sea level in areas of heavy pumping. Ground water moves southward from the northern half of the county to be intercepted near Cantonment. Virtually all ground water discharged south of Cantonment derives from local precipitation.

The report contains maps showing concentrations of carbon dioxide, nitrate, and iron in water from the aquifer, potentiometric maps, geohydrologic sections, and lithologic and radioactive logs of test holes.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological But more than simple preservation of such an environment is involved in its inclusion in our National Park System. Its isolation from the mainland provides an almost untouched laboratory for research in the natural sciences, especially those studies whose very nature depends upon such isolation.

One excellent example of such research is the intensive study of the predator-prey relationship of the timber wolf and moose, long sponsored by the National Park Service and Purdue University. In probably no other place in North America are the necessary ecological conditions for such a study so admirably fulfilled as on Isle Royale. The development of a natural laboratory with such conditions is ultimately dependent upon geologic processes and events that although not unique in themselves, produced in their interplay a unique result, the island archipelago as we know it today, with its hills and valleys, swamps and bogs the ecological framework of the plant and animal world.

Even the most casual visitor can hardly fail to be struck by the fiordlike nature of many of the bays, the chains of fringing islands, the ridge-and-valley topography, and the linear nature of all these features. The distinctive topography of the archipelago is, of course, only the latest manifestation of geologic processes in operation since time immemorial. Fragments of geologic history going back over a billion years can be read from the rocks of the island, and with additional data from other parts of the Lake Superior region, we can fill in some of the story of Isle Royale. After more than a hundred years of study by man, the story is still incomplete. But then, geologic stories are seldom complete, and what we do know allows a deeper appreciation of one of our most naturally preserved parks and whets our curiosity about the missing fragments.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","doi":"10.3133/b1309","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the National Park The first detailed analyses were reported by Gooch and Whitfield (1888). Allen and Day (1935) were second. White, Brannock, and Murata (1956) and Morey, Fournier, Hemley, and Rowe (1961) reported field analyses of dissolved silica content of hot springs. White, Hem, and Waring (1963) reported six new chemical analyses. Noguchi and Nix (1963) reported partial analyses of five geysers. Rowe, Fournier, and Morey (1973) published the analyses of 166 samples from 89 different locations and the previous analyses of the same hot springs and geysers from 1888 to their study. The analyses compiled here are from 541 samples from 405 different locations of streams, rivers, cold springs, warm springs, hot springs, pools, and geysers.

We are indebted to many colleagues at the Survey who have contributed to this report. These include Manuel Nathenson for his help in writing the computer program, E. E. Bell and H. S. Cortez for coding the analyses, R. O. Fournier, L. P. J. Muffler, A. H. Truesdell, and D. E. Considering only those sites (approximately one square city block in size) for which there is good evidence for the degree of ascribed intensity, the empirical relation derived between 1906 intensities and distance perpendicular to the fault for 917 sites underlain by rocks of the Franciscan Formation is: Intensity = 2.69 - 1.90 log (Distance) (km).\r\n\r\nFor sites on other geologic units intensity increments, derived with respect to this empirical relation, correlate strongly with the Average Horizontal Spectral Amplifications (AHSA) determined from 99 three-component recordings of ground motion generated by nuclear explosions in Nevada. The resulting empirical relation is: Intensity Increment = 0.27 +2.70 log (AHSA), and average intensity increments for the various geologic units are -0.29 for granite, 0.19 for Franciscan Formation, 0.64 for the Great Valley Sequence, 0.82 for Santa Clara Formation, 1.34 for alluvium, 2.43 for bay mud. The maximum intensity map predicted from these empirical relations delineates areas in the San Francisco Bay region of potentially high intensity from future earthquakes on either the San Andreas fault or the Hazard fault.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Dept. of the Interior, Geological Survey, National Center for Earthquake Research,","doi":"10.3133/ofr75180","usgsCitation":"Borcherdt, R.D., and Gibbs, J., 1975, Prediction of maximum earthquake intensities for the San Francisco Bay region: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 75-180, 25 leaves, 2 sheets, :ill., maps (2 fold. in pocket) ;27 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr75180.","productDescription":"25 leaves, 2 sheets, :ill., maps (2 fold. in pocket) ;27 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":145559,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0180/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":41142,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0180/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":41143,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0180/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":41144,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0180/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b07e4b07f02db69add7","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Borcherdt, Roger D. 0000-0002-8668-0849 borcherdt@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8668-0849","contributorId":2373,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Borcherdt","given":"Roger","email":"borcherdt@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[{"id":237,"text":"Earthquake Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":166623,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Gibbs, James F.","contributorId":95880,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gibbs","given":"James F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":166624,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Four of the ruptures occurred in the western coastal plain and foothills, and two occurred in the Longitudinal Valley of eastern Taiwan. Maps are included showing the locations and dimensions of the displacements. The published geological literature probably would not lead one to infer the existence of a fault along most of the 1906 rupture, except for descriptions of the rupture itself. Over most of its length the 1935 rupture on the Chihhu fault is parallel to but more than 0.5 km from nearby faults shown on geologic maps published in 1969 and 1971; only about 1.5 km of its 15 km length coincides with a mapped fault. The coastal plain part of the Tuntzuchio fault which ruptured in 1935 is apparently not revealed by landforms, and only suggested by other data. Part of the 1946 Hsinhua faulting coincides with a fault identified in the subsurface by seismic work but surface indications of the fault are obscure. The 1951 Meilun faulting occurred along a conspicuous pre-1951 scarp and the 1951 Yuli faulting occurred near or in line with pre-1951 scarps. \r\nMore than 40 faults which, according to the published literature, have had Pleistocene or later movement are shown on a small-scale map. Most of these faults are in the densely-populated western part of Taiwan. The map and text calls attention to faults that may be active and therefore may be significant in planning important structures. \r\n\r\nEquivocal evidence suggestive of fault creep was found on the Yuli fault and the Hsinhua fault. Fault creep was not found at several places examined along the 1906 fault trace. \r\n\r\nTectonic uplift has occurred in Taiwan in the last 10,000 years and application of eustatic sea level curves to published radiocarbon dates shows that the minimum rate of uplift is considerably different in different parts of the island. Incomplete data indicate that the rate is high near Hualien, where an uplift of at least 0.6 m and probably more than 1 m occurred in the 1951 earthquake, and near and south of the 1946 faulting. Sudden uplifts can have serious consequences for installations near the shore. Investigation of this process, study of recently active faults, and continuing study of seismicity are necessary parts of a practical earthquake-hazard reduction program.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr7541","usgsCitation":"Bonilla, M.G., 1975, A review of recently active faults in Taiwan (Version 1.1): U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 75-41, 43 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr7541.","productDescription":"43 p.","costCenters":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":145535,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":976,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/of75-41/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"edition":"Version 1.1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b19e4b07f02db6a7fa4","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bonilla, Manuel G.","contributorId":74384,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bonilla","given":"Manuel","email":"","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":166615,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The areas most seriously affected by flooding were: Central and southern California (January and February); the upper Midwestern States of North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Illinois (April); north-central Ohio (July); Mississippi, Alabama, and Virginia (Hurricane Camille in August); and Florida and Georgia (September). Severe floods in central and southern California were caused by three storms during January and February. At least 60 lives were lost. Homes and property were destroyed or damaged, by rainstorms, floods, and mudflows. Many floods approached or exceeded the maximum known. The severe flood damage was due partly to recent home construction in floodprone areas. The April floods in the upper Midwestern States of North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Illinois were expected because of a large accumulation of snow containing as much as 8 inches of water. Flood-protection procedures, together with cool temperatures, had a mitigating effect on the flood. The floods were the largest since the late 1800's, and their recurrence intervals exceeded 50 years at many of the gaged sites. Estimates of flood damage were about $147 million. More than a million acres of rich agricultural land were inundated, thousands of culverts and bridges were washed out, 23,000 people were forced from their homes and 11 lives were lost in the six-State flood area. Intense rainstorms and wind with gusts as much as 100 miles per hour, July 4-5, caused record floods in north-central Ohio, July 4-8. The storm and floods left trees uprooted, more than $66 million in damage, and 41 deaths. In many places the floods were the largest of record. Together with the wind and rainstorm, the hydrologic conditions were among the most significant experienced in the area. Hurricane Camille was the most intense hurricane on record to enter the United States mainland. It struck the Mississippi-Alabama coast on August 18, with tidal waves as high as 25 feet above mean sea level and wind velocities more than 190 miles per hour. Tidal wave and flood damage was about $1.3 billion. In Mississippi the known dead totaled 139 and 76 other persons were missing. The hurricane intensity decreased as it moved inland until it merged with severe rainstorms over the Appalachian mountains. The intensified hurricane then caused record-breaking floods of streams in a 50-mile-wide area as it moved eastward from Sulphur Springs, W. Va., to Fredericksburg, Va. Total flood damage in Virginia exceeded $116 million. There were 113 known deaths, 102 injuries, and 39 people missing. A tropical storm that was nearly stationary over northwest Florida for about 48 hours, September 20-23 produced record rains and floods. Near Quincy, Fla., the total rainfall for the period exceeded 20 inches. On Little River near Quincy, the peak discharge was nearly twice the previous maximum of record and was three times that of a 50-year flood. Flood damage to agricultural lands, bridges, culverts, and roads was about $1.7 million.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological With these are always associated galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, pyrite, and minor amounts of marcasite. The gangue is generally a breccia of various rock types, mostly volcanics, cemented by calcite that has been largely replaced by quartz. The quarts is often amethystine, and is the carrier of the metallic minerals. The breccia fragments are pyritized, but not markedly mineralized otherwise; most of the ore minerals are in the quarzitic cementing materials; however, relatively large crystals of the complex sulphosalts appear to be younger than, i.e., deposited on, the quarts crystals in vugs.

The mineralization is not of the banded-vein type, but consists of discrete ore particles in patches and streaks in the quarts. In general there is no,clear indication that any of the base-metal sulfides are in a definite age sequence; there is evidence of argentite replacing galena, as well as the other sulfides.

There are local variations in the gangue - a soapstone (\"jabon\") is worked locally, and also a porous leached (?) siliceous rock (\"charasco\"). The character of the mineralisation, however, is essentially constant throughout the area studied, and in particular no significant variation was noted in the several vein systems.

Investigation of gas-liquid inclusions in the quartz suggests that the ores were deposited at about 254°C and, therefore, that the mineralization is hydrothermal.

Possible recovery of the base-metal content of the ore is considered; it is computed that several hundred thousand dollars worth of copper, zinc, and lead is mined and milled annually, and discarded as tailings and/or slag. This with similar waste from not-too remote mining districts might be processed at some central point for profitable recovery. Hitherto unrecognized germanium is also present, but in the absence of a cheap and reliable method of estimating small percentages of this metal, it is not likely that germanium can be produced economically.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr7570","usgsCitation":"Wilson, I.F., Milton, C., and Houston, J.R., 1975, A mineralogical study of the Guanajuato, Mexico, silver ores: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 75-70, 157 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr7570.","productDescription":"157 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":492201,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0070/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":148455,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0070/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"Mexico","state":"Guanajuato","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -103.07143132538243,\n              22.06160830209653\n            ],\n            [\n              -103.07143132538243,\n              19.796004819064265\n            ],\n            [\n              -99.39564170640034,\n              19.796004819064265\n            ],\n            [\n              -99.39564170640034,\n              22.06160830209653\n            ],\n            [\n              -103.07143132538243,\n              22.06160830209653\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b23e4b07f02db6adfc9","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wilson, Ivan Franklin","contributorId":103724,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wilson","given":"Ivan","email":"","middleInitial":"Franklin","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":173107,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Milton, Charles","contributorId":13616,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Milton","given":"Charles","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":173105,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Houston, Joseph Rollins","contributorId":44239,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Houston","given":"Joseph","email":"","middleInitial":"Rollins","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":173106,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}
