In Part 2, data on the quality of surface water (chemical, temperature, and sediment) were collected from designated sampling sites at predetermined intervals, such as once daily, weekly, monthly, or less frequently, and at some sites data were recorded on punched paper tape at 15-, 30-, or 60-minute intervals. Records are given for 42 sampling stations of which 30 are continuous record stations, and 12 are partial-record stations. Locations of water-quality stations are shown in Figure 1. A few pertinent stations (not included above) in bordering States are also included in this report. In Part 3, records are included for 37 observation wells of which 8 are equipped with water-level recorders that give a continuous graph of the fluctuations, 3 are equipped with digital recorders that punch the water level on a tape at hourly intervals, at 26 manual reading are made with a steel tape by observers on the days indicated. Locations of index wells are shown in Figure 2. The records were collected and computed by the Water Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey under the direction of Edwin E. Harris, district chief. These data represent that portion of the National Water Data System collected by the U.S. Geological Survey and cooperating State and Federal agencies in West Virginia.</p><p>Beginning with the 1961 water year, streamflow records and related data have been released by the Geological Survey in annual reports on a State-boundary basis. Water-quality records beginning with the 1964 water year have been similarly released either in separate reports or in conjunction with streamflow records. These reports are for limited distribution and are designed primarily for rapid release of data shortly after the end of the water year.</p><p>Records of discharge and stage of streams, and contents and stage of lakes and reservoirs are published in a series of U.S. Geological Survey water-supply papers entitled, \"Surface Water Supply of the United States.\" Through September 30, 1960, these water-supply papers were in an annual series and since then are in a 5-year series. The deposits are lenses distributed along a narrow stratigraphic zone more than 4,600 feet long. Wallrocks have been altered by silicification, leaching, and by the introduction and oxidation of iron. Alteration appears to be partly related to barite deposition, and the deposits are tentatively classified as hydrothermal.</p><p>Mime deposits are of economic interest. The largest is 30 to 80 feet thick and 1,200 feet long. Smaller deposits are 270 to 460 feet long and average about 15 feet in thickness. Preliminary estimates indicate that the deposits contain 1,280,000 short tons of barite. The study of lakes has become increasingly prevalent in recent years. Lakes are a valuable resource, and their multiple uses have made them susceptible to water-quality problems such as algal blooms, sediment deposition and fish kills. These problems are products of the eutrophication process (enrichment, aging and extinction of lakes), which is often accelerated by man. Therefore, it becomes important to understand the properties and processes of lakes which govern lake enrichment, and the measures available to control enrichment.</p>\n<p>Lakes are described in terms of their physical (light penetration, temperature, sediment, and morphology), chemical (chemical constituents, plant nutrients:, and dissolved gases) and biological (plankton, benthos, and nekton) properties. These properties are all interre]ated, and are important variables to measure to evaluate water quality. In addition, lake processes, such as photosynthesis, respiration, eutrophication, and biogeochemical cycling, are important factors in determining the sources and extent of enrichment, and managing a lake for maximum benefit. Meeting demands for water of high quality requires a general knowledge of lake properties and processes, coupled with lake-basin planning, watershed and lake management, and water-quality control. There are many lake-management and control practices, but the best tools for quality control are preventive measures. Once extensive enrichment has occurred, there are few management or control options available.</p>\n<p>As lake studies become more common, sampling techniques for data collection need increased accuracy and consistency, in order to make meaningful comparisons between different lakes. Therefore, the report discusses the main factors involved in conducting lake studies. These factors include the types and frequency of measurements useful in lake reconnaissance studies and a review of literature on sampling equipment and techniques. A glossary of selected terms begins the report, which is intended for guideline use by urban planners and managers.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Using a release-flow model and an empirical equation, the suspended-sediment discharge at Kneeland was estimated to be about 60 percent of the suspended-sediment discharge at the Arcata station. The study of the proposed impoundment determined the effect of discharge on channel configuration and concluded: The reservoir would trap about 60 percent of the potential beach-forming sediments. Release flows could transport'the expected inflow of sediment particles less than 2 millimetres in diameter for the reach of the river downstream from the impoundment site and about 130,000 tons per year (120,000 tonnes per year) of bed material particles less than 3 inches (76 millimetres) in diameter. Release flows could be expected to degrade the channel for about 15.miIes (24 kilometres) downstream from the impoundment, and downstream from that reach artificial adjustments would override most release-flow effects on channel adjustments.
