The State was divided into eight regions and separate multiple-regression equations for each region were developed that relate logarithms of annual flood magnitude to logarithms of basin characteristics for exceedance probabilities of 50, 20, 10, 4, 2, and 1 percent. The standard errors of estimate for an exceedance probability of 1 percent ranged from 39 to 58 percent in the western and central parts of the State and from 47 to 83 percent in the eastern part. The standard errors of estimate indicate a substantial improvement over previous studies. Techniques for transferring annual flood-frequency information at gaged sites to ungaged sites on the same stream have been updated. Included are curves relating flood-frequency information to drainage area for eight major streams in the State. Maximum known flood peaks in Montana are compared with estimated 1-percent-chance flood peaks and with national maximum known flood peaks. Values of flood discharges for selected exceedance probabilities and values of significant basin characteristics for all gaging stations used in the analysis are tabulated. Included are data for 339 stations in Montana and 34 nearby stations in Canada and adjoining States. Textural analysis of cores from this area indicates that the deposit consists of sandy to clayey silts overlying a well sorted relict sand. The maximum thickness of the fine sediments is about 6 meters as determined from a core near the center of this deposit.</p><p>The mineralogy of the &lt;2 um size fraction is similar in both the fine sediments of the contemporary deposit and the underlying coarse sands. The assemblage consists of about 60% illite, 20% chlorite, and 10% kaolinite with minor amounts of mixed-layered clay and smectites.</p><p>Heavy mineral analysis from a core near the center of the deposit reveals that opaque minerals, framboidal pyrite, muscovite, hornblende, garnet, and tourmaline constitute over 65% of the total downcore assemblage.</p><p>Pyrite concentrations vary widely at some intervals and may reflect areas of micro-reducing conditions within the core or changes in source area with time. A persistent mica content indicates the presence of a low-energy environment throughout the depositional history of these fine sediments.</p><p>Downcore organic carbon concentrations are generally uniform in the fine sediments and average about 1.5 percent. In all, 18.5 kilometers of high-resolution seismic profiles and sidescan-sonar data were obtained.</p><p>The systems used included an 80-J minisparker and an EPC-32001 recorder and an EDO Western sidescan system. The navigation was by Northstar LORAN-C and by buoy-to-buoy dead reckoning within Duxbury Harbor.</p><p>The original records may be viewed at the U.S. Geological Survey, Woods Hole, Massachusetts. Two studies were made on the upper Willamette River and one was made on the Santiam River, a Willamette River tributary. Nitrification, occurring in both the upper Willamette and South Santiam Rivers, accounted for about 62% and 92% of the DO sag in the rivers, respectively. Rates of nitrification were found to be dependent on ammonia concentrations in the rivers. Periphyton and phytoplankton algal samples were collected on the main stem Willamette River and selected tributaries during August 1978. Diatoms were the dominant group in both the periphyton and phytoplankton samples. The most common diatom genera were Melosira, Stephanodiscus, Cymbella, Achnanthes, and Nitzschia. Comparisons with historical data indicate no significant difference from previous years in the total abundance or diversity of the algae. Degradation has occurred as a result of wastewater discharge and irrigation return. Characteristics of the degraded ground water include concentrations of dissolved solids exceeding 1,000 milligrams per liter, odor threshold numbers exceeding 5, dissolved organic carbon exceeding 2.0 milligrams per liter, chloride exceeding 250 milligrams per liter, phenols exceeding 1 microgram per liter, and methylene blue active substances exceeding 0.20 milligram per liter. Large flows in the river during the winters of 1977-78 and 1978-79 recharged the aquifer with water from storm runoff. The ground-water-quality monitoring data showed that few changes in the concentration and distribution of chemical constituents occurred between 1974 and 1977, but between 1977 and 1979 there were overall decreases in most constituents and in odor. The monitoring data also showed that between 1977 and 1979 the degraded ground water spread and moved downgradient, whereas prior to 1977 it had been generally confined to an area between Barstow and the U.S. Marine Corps Supply Center. Of 96 stations with available data, 53 stations or 55 percent were considered to have sufficient data for analysis. The classification of water type was based on the relation of the major ions: calcium, magnesium, sodium, carbonate, bicarbonate, sulfate, and chloride to each other within the range of measured specific conductance. The suitability of the water for use as a public supply was based on the concentration distribution of selected constituents. The constituents selected were those with maximum contaminant levels established by regulation, or constituents for which recommended maximum limits have been established and for which historic data are available. The probability of spill occurrences, likely movement of oil slicks, and locations of resources vulnerable to spilled oil were analyzed. The times between spill occurrence and contact with various resources were also estimated. The combined results yielded estimates of the overall risks associated with development of the proposed lease area. Assuming that oil exists in the lease area (a 40-percent chance) and depending upon the routes chosen to transport oil from OCS platforms to the shore, the leasing of the tracts proposed for OCS Sale 52 will result in an expected 10.2 oilspills (of 1,000 barrels or larger). The estimated probability that land will be contacted by one or more oilspills (of 1,000 barrels or larger) that have been at sea less than 30 days is 0.71. Their gradients are gentle, averaging 10 feet per mile. All streams in the area studied have a mean annual discharge of less than 20 cubic feet per second, and most are from 3 to 10 miles long. Under natural conditions, about 95 percent of total streamflow originates as ground-water seepage from the upper glacial aquifer; the remaining 5 percent consists of direct runoff. Thus, the streams of Long Island function as ground-water drains, the flow of which in dry weather is controlled directly by ground-water levels adjacent to the stream channels. Monthly low-flow discharge measurements of 18 south-shore streams in Nassau County from 1978-79 are tabulated in this report. Measurement sites were established at 1,000-foot intervals between the southern tide-affected reach and the northern headwaters of each stream. About one-half of this water was used to artificially recharge the Upper Penitencia Creek alluvial fan in Santa Clara Valley. In order to determine the relative amounts of local ground water and recharged imported water being pumped from the wells, stable isotopes of oxygen and hydrogen were used to trace the movement of the imported water in the alluvial fan. To trace the movement of imported water in the Upper Penitencia Creek alluvial fan, well samples were selected to give areal and depth coverage for the whole fan. The stable isotopes of oxygen-16, oxygen-18, and deuterium were measured in the water samples of imported water and from the wells and streams in the Santa Clara Valley. The d18oand dD compositions of the local runoff were about -6.00 o/oo (parts per thousand) and -40 o/oo, respectively; the average compositions for the local native ground-water samples were about -6.1 o/oo and -41 o/oo, respectively; and the average compositions of the imported water samples were -10.2 o/oo and -74 o/oo, respectively. (The oxygen isotopic composition of water samples is reported relative to Standard Mean Ocean Water, in parts per thousand.) The difference between local ground water and recharged imported water was about 4.1 o/oo in d18o and 33 o/oo in dL.\r\n\r\nThe isotopic data indicate dilution of northern California water with local ground water in a downgradient direction. Two wells contain approximately 74 percent northern California water, six wells more than 50 percent.
