Occasionally reports from other sources have been included; in such instances references have been summarized in greater detail than those to the kinds of reports listed above. Certain, mainly statistical reports such as the annual Minerals Yearbook of the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the biennial and annual reports of the State of Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys and its predecessor State and Territorial agencies are not included.
This report is divided into three parts: a section made up of summaries of references arranged alphabetically first by quadrangle and second by occurrence name; a section that lists synonyms for names in the first section, claim names, and the names of operators and owners of mines and prospects; and a section that lists, by author, all references summarized in the first section.

Ground-water yields are low and may be locally inadequate for single family requirements where wells produce from bedrock in the eastern Hillside region. At lower altitudes single family water requirements of 3 to 10 gallons per minute or 0.2 to 0.6 litre per second usually can be obtained, but aquifers capable of being pumped at larger yields for public supplies are uncommon. However, in a few localities, wells do produce 40 to 300 gallons per minute or 2.5 to 19 litres per second from sand and gravel aquifers lying within thick sequences of glacial till. Streamflow within the Hillside area is inadequate as a significant source of water for public supply. Springs, swamps, and water-logged surficial sediments in the Hillside area are mainly caused by hilly terrain and low permeability of surficial materials.
The relative vulnerability of streams, lakes, and ground water to pollution caused by the discharge of liquid waste, particularly from onsite sewage-disposal systems, is moderate to high in about half the study area. At higher altitudes contamination of bedrock aquifers may occur if discharge of liquid wastes is not regulated. The deep sedimentary aquifers at lower altitudes are less susceptible to contamination. However, shallow groundwater bodies may become polluted by discharge of sewage effluent and, consequently, some deep wells may be contaminated by seepage down the outside of casings or through leaky casing joints and underground seals.

A well-structured land-use policy for the entire Front Range Urban Corridor, in which compatible land uses are taken into account, could lead to overall improvements in land values. A land classification map is the first step toward implementing such a policy.

Relatively few new data were collected.
The White River can be subdivided into five distinct river-quality sections. Section 1, above Winchester, drains a rural area and is affected by agricultural land use, although the river quality generally is good. Section 2, between Winchester and Muncie, is affected by urbanization at Winchester and Muncie. The river quality generally is good, although stretches near the cities occasionally have problems. Section 3, Muncie to Anderson, is polluted by urban effluent. Section 4, Anderson to Indianapolis, is further polluted (particularly at Anderson), but the river tends to recover considerably at Indianapolis, and becomes relatively clean. Section 5, below Indianapolis, is polluted. The river continues to be polluted below the project boundary.
The river is affected most severely in the Indianapolis area. For example, in October 1972 the nitrogen load increased from 5.45 tons per day (4.94 tonnes per day) above Indianapolis to 18.43 tons per day (16.72 tonnes per day) below the city. Ten micrograms per kilogram of DDD, 20 micrograms per kilogram of chlordane, and 20 micrograms per kilogram of polychlorinated biphenyls were extracted from the sediments in the White River below Indianapolis. The median coliform bacteria count below Indianapolis is 360,000 colonies per 100 millilitres of water. The only benthic invertebrates found in the White River below Indianapolis are pollution-tolerant species, and very few fish are found. Conditions are similar, but to a somewhat lesser degree, below Muncie.

Physical, chemical, and biological parameters were determined in surface water, bottom sediment, and bulk precipitation (rainfall and dry fallout).
The geology of the area, bottom sediment, bulk precipitation, natural, urban, and agricultural runoff, and the characteristics of the hydrologic system in the Everglades influence the type and concentration of each chemical constituent and how it affects the water quality.
The quality of surface water in the agricultural area between Lake Okeechobee and the water conservation areas is markedly different from that of other surface water in southeastern Florida. In general, the water in this area is higher in concentrations of most chemical constituents. Man has engaged in cultural activities, both agricultural and urban, which have affected the water quality in the northern and eastern segments of the area of investigation.
The quality of the water improves, however, as it flows to the south and east because there is minimal input from man's activities and many of the constituents are assimilated by plants, sorbed on organic material and clay in the bottom sediments, and entrapped within the sediments. Dilution by rainfall and concentration by evapotranspiration are also important factors that influence the quality of surface water in the area of investigation.
The area of investigation in the Everglades is a sink for macronutrients, trace metals, and chlorinated-hydrocarbon insecticides. These constituents do not move through the system freely. They become tied up in various complexes and for that reason, the water being delivered to Everglades National Park is of better quality than the water entering the northern edge of the water conservation areas. The various physical and biological processes and chemical reactions combine to improve the water quality as the water flows southward.
The data presented in this report may be used as a baseline for determination of future changes in water quality at the several places in the Everglades where recurrent sampling of rainfall, surface water, and bottom sediments was undertaken during the course of the investigation.
