With these are always associated galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, pyrite, and minor amounts of marcasite. The gangue is generally a breccia of various rock types, mostly volcanics, cemented by calcite that has been largely replaced by quartz. The quarts is often amethystine, and is the carrier of the metallic minerals. The breccia fragments are pyritized, but not markedly mineralized otherwise; most of the ore minerals are in the quarzitic cementing materials; however, relatively large crystals of the complex sulphosalts appear to be younger than, i.e., deposited on, the quarts crystals in vugs.

The mineralization is not of the banded-vein type, but consists of discrete ore particles in patches and streaks in the quarts. In general there is no,clear indication that any of the base-metal sulfides are in a definite age sequence; there is evidence of argentite replacing galena, as well as the other sulfides.

There are local variations in the gangue - a soapstone (\"jabon\") is worked locally, and also a porous leached (?) siliceous rock (\"charasco\"). The character of the mineralisation, however, is essentially constant throughout the area studied, and in particular no significant variation was noted in the several vein systems.

Investigation of gas-liquid inclusions in the quartz suggests that the ores were deposited at about 254°C and, therefore, that the mineralization is hydrothermal.

Possible recovery of the base-metal content of the ore is considered; it is computed that several hundred thousand dollars worth of copper, zinc, and lead is mined and milled annually, and discarded as tailings and/or slag. This with similar waste from not-too remote mining districts might be processed at some central point for profitable recovery. Hitherto unrecognized germanium is also present, but in the absence of a cheap and reliable method of estimating small percentages of this metal, it is not likely that germanium can be produced economically.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr7570","usgsCitation":"Wilson, I.F., Milton, C., and Houston, J.R., 1975, A mineralogical study of the Guanajuato, Mexico, silver ores: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 75-70, 157 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr7570.","productDescription":"157 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":492201,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0070/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":148455,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0070/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"Mexico","state":"Guanajuato","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -103.07143132538243,\n              22.06160830209653\n            ],\n            [\n              -103.07143132538243,\n              19.796004819064265\n            ],\n            [\n              -99.39564170640034,\n              19.796004819064265\n            ],\n            [\n              -99.39564170640034,\n              22.06160830209653\n            ],\n            [\n              -103.07143132538243,\n              22.06160830209653\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b23e4b07f02db6adfc9","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wilson, Ivan Franklin","contributorId":103724,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wilson","given":"Ivan","email":"","middleInitial":"Franklin","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":173107,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Milton, Charles","contributorId":13616,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Milton","given":"Charles","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":173105,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Houston, Joseph Rollins","contributorId":44239,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Houston","given":"Joseph","email":"","middleInitial":"Rollins","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":173106,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

The deposits are as much as 300 feet (91 m) 2/ thick, of which as much as 145 feet (44 m) is saturated.

In 1972, there were about 1,040 large-capacity wells--yielding 100 gallons per minute (6.3 1/s) or more--in the counties, mostly for irrigation supplies. The wells yield as much as 2,000 gallons per minute (130 1/s). Withdrawals of ground water average about 220,000 acre-feet (270 hm3) annually.

Water levels have declined in parts of the area where large-capacity wells are concentrated, resulting in as much as 60-percent reduction in saturated thickness. Water-level declines during 1948-72 ranged from less than 10 to about 55 feet (3-17 m). The largest decline, about 55 feet (17 m), has occurred near Leoti, in central Wichita County. As of January 1972, about 5 million acre-feet (6,000 hm) of ground water were in storage in Greeley and Wichita Counties; however, only about 70 percent of this amount is considered to be available for pumping.

The water from the unconsolidated aquifer is a mixed chemical type in which calcium, sodium, and bicarbonate are the principal constituents. Generally, the water is suitable for all common domestic, stock, and irrigation uses.

Price increases for grain in 1973 and absence of acreage controls probably will encourage additional development of ground water for irrigation. Increased withdrawals will, however, accelerate the rate of water-level decline and reduction in ground-water storage. Increased water-level declines will be accompanied in most of the area by noticeable decreases in well yields. Any additional increase in the rate of withdrawal in areas where saturated thickness has declined about 40 percent or more may significantly shorten the economic life of the aquifer. Additional development in these areas should be considered with regard to increasing pumping costs and decreasing well yields. Development of the ground-water resource could be managed in several ways. The formation of Kansas Ground-Water Management District Number 1 provides a means by which local water users can decide on various management alternatives that would affect the future of their irrigation supply.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr75557","usgsCitation":"Slagle, S.E., and Weakly, E.C., 1975, Ground-water resources of Greeley and Wichita counties, Western Kansas: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 75-557, 63 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr75557.","productDescription":"63 p.","numberOfPages":"79","costCenters":[{"id":353,"text":"Kansas Water Science Center","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":147924,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0557/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":346206,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0557/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Kansas","county":"Greeley County,  Wichita County","geographicExtents":"{\"type\":\"FeatureCollection\",\"features\":[{\"type\":\"Feature\",\"geometry\":{\"type\":\"Polygon\",\"coordinates\":[[[-101.5669,38.2633],[-102.0443,38.2627],[-102.0443,38.2676],[-102.0454,38.6138],[-102.0455,38.6953],[-101.5694,38.7004],[-101.485,38.7002],[-101.1293,38.7001],[-101.1254,38.264],[-101.5405,38.2631],[-101.5669,38.2633]]]},\"properties\":{\"name\":\"Greeley\",\"state\":\"KS\"}}]}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a9ae4b07f02db65d79b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Slagle, Steven E.","contributorId":35284,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Slagle","given":"Steven","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":172102,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Weakly, Edward C.","contributorId":39390,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Weakly","given":"Edward","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":172103,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The data were collected as part of a joint heat-flow study by the Australian National University (ANU) and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) under the direction of J. C. Jaeger (ANU) and J. H. Sass (USGS). The format is similar to that used for basic data from United States heat-flow determinations (Sass and Munroe, 1974). Each section contains a state map showing the geographic distribution of heat-flow data followed by tables which list individual temperatures, thermal conductivities, and radiogenic heat production values. A companion volume (Bunker and others, 1975) gives details of the heat-production measurements together with individual radioelement concentrations. Localities are arranged in alphabetical order within each state. The methods and techniques of measurements have been described by Sass and others (1971a, b). Unusual methods or procedures which differ markedly from these techniques are noted and described in the comments sections of the tables.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological The largest deposits now undergoing extensive exploration and development are in the eastern Amazon Basin. Most of these deposits are in the State of Para, but some are in Amazonas and Maranhao.

Discovery of large-scale resources of bauxite in the Amazon Region is so recent that mining has not begun, it from Pops de Caldas in Minas Gerais, is about 760,000 metric tons of ore from which about 100,000 tons of aluminum metal is produced, most of which is consumed by Brazilian industry.

The Minor amounts of it are produced together with tantalum from columbite-tantalite concentrates from pegmatites and placers adjacent to them, in the Sao Joao del Rei district in south-central Minas Gerais. All the niobium and tantalum produced in Brazil is exported. The only pyrochlore mined is from the Barreiro carbonatite deposit near Araxa in Minas Gerais where concentrates and ferroniobium are produced. Exploration work for pyrochlore and other mineral resources are being undertaken on other carbonatites, particularly at Catalao I in southeast Goias and at Tapira and Serra Negra in western Minas Gerais. Annual production and export from the Barreiro deposit are about 8,000 metric tons of pyrochlore concentrate containing about 60 percent Nb205 and about 2,700 metric tons of ferroniobium with 63 percent Nb2O5.\r\n\r\nThe annual production capacity of the Barreiro plant is 18,000 tons of concentrate and 4,000 tons of ferroniobium. Ore reserves of the Barreiro deposit in all categories are 380 million tons with percent Nb2O5. Annual production of tantalite-columbite from the Sao Joao del Rei district, most of which is exported to the United States, is about 290 tons, of which about 79 percent is tantalite and about percent is columbite. The complex includes four major rock units, the Murdama Group, porphyritic granodiorite, quartz monzonite, alkaline granite, and areas enriched in silica. Structural and compositional relationships among some of the rock units are defined in part by aeromagnetic and gamma-ray spectrometric geophysical data. Geochemical data from -10 +30 mesh surficial debris were primarily related to the composition of the major rock units, whereas data from heavy-mineral concentrates were used to establish the location of tungsten-molybdenum-bismuth anomalies. \r\n\r\nTwo areas of about 40 sq km each are occupied by tungsten-molybdenum-bismuth anomalies interpreted to be related to the alkaline granite. Since bedrock geologic features are frequently expressed in the topography the radar lends itself to geologic interpretation. \r\n\r\nThe radar was studied by comparisons with field mapped geologic data first at a scale of approximately 1:125,000 and then at a scale of 1:500,000. The larger scale comparison revealed that faults, minor faults, joint sets, bedding and foliation attitudes, lithology and lithologic contacts all have a topographic expression interpretable on the imagery. Surficial geologic features were far less visible on the imagery over most of the area studied. The smaller scale comparisons revealed a pervasive, near orthogonal fracture set cutting all types and ages of rock and trending roughly N40?E and N30?W. In certain places the strike of bedding and foliation attitudes and some lithologic Contacts were visible in addition to the fractures. \r\n\r\nFracturing in southern New England is apparently far more important than has been previously recognized. This new information, together with the visibility of many bedding and foliation attitudes and lithologic contacts, indicates the importance of radar imagery in improving the geologic interpretation of an area.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr75212","usgsCitation":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey, 1975, Chemical analyses (raw laboratory data) and locality index maps of the Confederate Gulch area, Broadwater and Meagher Counties, Montana: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 75-212, Report: 175 p.; 4 Plate: 17.79 × 27.76 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr75212.","productDescription":"Report: 175 p.; 4 Plate: 17.79 × 27.76 inches or smaller","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":46078,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0212/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":46076,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0212/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":46080,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0212/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":407627,"rank":7,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_15123.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":46077,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0212/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":46079,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0212/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":148970,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0212/report-thumb.jpg"}],"scale":"24000","country":"United States","state":"Montana","county":"Broadwater County, Meagher County","otherGeospatial":"Confederate Gulch area","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -111.5,\n              46.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.25,\n              46.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.25,\n              46.75\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.5,\n              46.75\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.5,\n              46.5\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e2e4b07f02db5e4bb5","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey","contributorId":128075,"corporation":true,"usgs":false,"organization":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey","id":528994,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

By utilizing state-of-the-art integrated circuits, the size of the remote unit has been considerably reduced over previous equipment and the power consumption has been decreased by a factor of over 100 to less than 2 milliwatts. This reduction in size and power makes it possible to package the electronic equipment, together with a year's supply of batteries, in a container the size of a tennis-ball can. The field equipment for a short-period station is now sealed in a 3-inch plastic tube 22 inches long . The tube, together with the connecting cable to the telephone terminal, is buried; greatly reducing losses due to water flooding, pilferage, etc. An important addition to the field unit is a daily calibration of the seismometer and amplifier.

Specifications and instructions for the three units that compose the system are presented separately, as follows:

1. J302 Preamplifier and voltage controlled oscillator

2. C-4 Calibrator

3. J101 Discriminator
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr7564","usgsCitation":"Van Schaack, J.R., 1975, Self-calibrating seismic amplifier and telemetry system: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 75-64, 44 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr7564.","productDescription":"44 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":363379,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0064/ofr7564_report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":147620,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0064/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49ffe4b07f02db5f7b47","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Van Schaack, John R.","contributorId":61040,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Van Schaack","given":"John","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":172726,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
