Unoxidized siliceous \"black shale\" from drill hole NGA 7 is strongly enriched in Cd, Mo, Sb, Se, V, and Zn, and also contains relatively high concentrations of As, Ba, Cu, Ni, and Tl compared with nonmetalliferous shales. Analyses of 103 samples plotted against depth in drill holes NGA, NG31, and NGA7, and selected XRD data, show the following: </p><p> 1. Groups of elements with distinct distribution patterns define most of major mineralogic components of the rocks. The \"normal shale\" component, which includes several detrital and authigenic phases, is indicated by covariations among Ti, Al, Fe, Na, Mg, K, B, Be, Co, Cr, Ga, La, Sc, Sr, and Zr. The shale component is diluted by varying amounts of the following minerals (and associated elements): silica (Si); dolomite (Mg, Ca, Mn, Sr); apatite (Ca, Be, Cr, La, Sr, Y); barite (Ba, Sr); sphalerite (Zn, Cd, Fe?); smithsonite (Cd, Co, Mn, Ni, Zn); bianchite (Cd, Ni, Zn) ; and bokite (V). Pyrite, gypsum, and jarosite were also identified.</p><p>2. The highly siliceous kerogenous metalliferous Gibellini facies is underlain by argillaceous and (or) dolomitic rocks. The transition zone deduced from the chemical data is not well defined in all instances, but probably represents the bottom of the black shale deposit. </p><p>3. Oxidation has reached to variable depths up to at least 150 ft, and has caused profound changes in the distributions of the enriched metals. Molybdenum, Se, and V have been partially removed from the upper parts of the sections and are concentrated near or slightly above the base of the Gibellini facies. The study consisted of coordinated geological, geochemical, and mineral resource studies with the objective of evaluating the potential for mineral deposits in the 200 km area. The geochemical survey consisted of the collection of stream-sediment samples, stream-sediment samples taken for panning to produce heavy-mineral concentrates, and rock and water samples. The samples were analyzed by both wet chemical and semiquantita-tive emission spectrographic techniques. Rocks comprising the aquifer were deposited in a near-shore environment ranging from marine on the west to nonmarine to the east. Because of changes in depositional environments with time and from place to place, the aquifer is a complex sequence of fine to very fine grained sandstone, siltstone, shale, and conglomerate, with interbedded very thin limestone. Aggregate thicknesses of water-bearing sandstones are greatest south of the Cimarron River where they reach a maximum of 550 feet in the vicinity of Seminole. Interpretation was based on data from the wells, a potentiometric-surface map, and chemical analyses. Four of the five landfills are in abandoned sand and gravel pits. Pumping of water from a quarry near the landfills has modified the local ground-water flow pattern, increased the hydraulic gradient, and lowered the water table. Ground water unaffected by the landfills is a hard, calcium bicarbonate type with concentrations of dissolved iron and dissolved sulfate as great as 3.0 milligrams per liter and 200 milligrams per liter, respectively. Water sampled from wells downgradient from two landfills shows an increase in sodium, chloride, and other constituents. The change in water quality cannot be traced directly to the landfills, however, because of well location and the presence of other potential sources of contamination. Chemical analysis of leachate from a collection unit at one landfill shows significant amounts of zinc, chromium, copper, and nickel, in addition to high total organic carbon, biochemical oxygen demand, and organic nitrogen. Concentrations of chloride, iron, lead, manganese and phenolic compounds exceed Ohio Environmental Protection Agency Water Quality Standards for drinking water. Water from unaffected wells within the study area have relatively small amounts of these constituents. To monitor the sediment transported by streams in the Mount St. Helens area and the particle-size distributions of the sediment, the Water Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey initially established 18 fluvial sediment stations. In this report, concentrations and discharges of suspended sediment are given for 16 fluvial-sediment stations (5 are in the Toutle River basin) and for 11 miscellaneous sampling sites. Also included are particle-size distributions of suspended sediment and bed material, water discharge, and water temperature for many of the sediment samples. Daily sediment discharges for the period May 18 to September 30 were calculated for Toutle River at Highway 99 near Castle Rock and Cowlitz River at Castel Rock. Over 150 million tons of sediment are estimated to have passed the Toutle River at Highway 99 station on May 18-19, 1980. High concentrations of suspended sediment persisted at several stations throughout the spring and summer of 1980.
