As a result, the volcanic ash fell some 50 miles to the south in the Bull Run watershed, the principal water-supply source for the metropolitan area of Portland, Oreg. Water samples collected from three stream sites within the watershed were compared with samples collected during the same season in previous years. No detectable changes were noted in chemical characteristics. Precipitation samples collected immediately after the June 12-13 ash fall ranged in specific conductance from 20 to 41 micromhos per centimeter at 25C and in pH from 4.0 to 4.3 pH units. Stream samples collected during the May-June period ranged in specific conductance from 18 to 28 micromhos per centimeter at 25C and in pH from 6.7 to 7.5 pH units. Volcanic-ash samples were collected and analyzed for particle size, chemical composition, and weight. Significant differences in particle size of ash were found in samples from two separate eruptions. The assistance was to be provided in four specialty areas, but the scope of this report is limited to making recommendations on the design of a hydrologic data base for Portugal.</p><p>It is recommended that a small data base be developed initially to meet the needs for ground-water data in the Algarve region utilizing personnel in the Division of Geohydrology in the Directorate of Water Resources Development. This data base may eventually be expanded to cover all regions of Portugal and include all types of hydrologic data, including streamflow, precipitation, and surface-water quality, as well as groundwater data. The overlying surficial aquifer contains a constant-head water table and is coupled to the Floridan aquifer by a leakage term that represents flow through a confining layer separating the two aquifers. Under the steady-state condition, all storage terms are set to zero. Utilization of the head-controlled flux condition allows head and flow to vary at the model-grid boundaries. Procedures are described to calibrate the model, test its sensitivity to input-parameter errors, and verify its accuracy for predictive purposes. Also included are attachments that describe setting up and running the model. An example model-interrogation run shows anticipated drawdowns that should result from pumping at the newly constructed Cross Bar Ranch and Morris Bridge well fields. Because of the available water-level control and the rough terrain throughout the area, the delineation of the water table was limited to 20-foot contour intervals. On the basis of recent river-stage and precipitation records, this delineation should represent near or slightly below average conditions.</p>\n<p>In addition to the alluvium, several other geologic formations crop out in the areas. These formations are capable of producing small to large quantities of water to wells, but the current (1981) pumping demand is small. The pressure heads in each of these formations appear to be in continuity, and the contours indicate that no barriers restrict ground-water movement from one formation to another. Several water-producing horizons may be present at many locations. The water-table map was constructed by using the head in the horizon that is nearest the land surface. The configuration of the water table closely approximates the topography. The water table slopes from the highland areas toward the Colorado River and small creeks.</p>\n<p>The delineation of the water table in the alluvium of the Colorado River is fairly well defined, and 10-feet contour intervals may be interpreted with confidence in the area called ' potential lignite-mining area. These projects were made in cooperation with 6 State and local and 11 Federal agencies. State and local cooperative funding amounted to $720,670; Federal funding amounted to $2,437,628.</p><p>Eighty-three persons were employed--40 full time and 43 other than full time. In addition, the Water Resources Division maintains a project office at the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory. Work there is done in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Energy, the sole funding source.</p><p>Projects other than continuing programs for collection of hydrologic data included flood-characteristics and flood-mapping studies, geothermal-resource investigations, ground-water quality assessments, basin- and region-wide water-resource investigations, river quality-of-water monitoring studies, volcanic-ash related studies, and ground-water-trends and stream-gaging program evaluations.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological
