The computed discharge of Santa Maria River at Guadalupe for the water years 1969-71 was 9,500,000 tons (8,600,000 tonnes) of suspended sediment and 6,000,000 tons (5,400,000 tonnes) of coarse sediment. Estimated mean annual coarse-sediment discharge for the 31 water years, 1941-71, is 230,000 tons (209,000 tonnes) in the Santa Ana River and 300,000 tons (272,000 tonnes) in the Santa Maria River. Streamflow in the Santa Maria River was adjusted to represent 1971 conditions. The 31-year mean annual volumes of coarse-sediment discharges are 190,000 cubic yards (140,000 cubic metres) in the Santa Ana River and 250,000 cubic yards (190,000 cubic metres) in the Santa Maria River.</p><p>Only during floodflow is any significant quantity of sediment transported. An office was established in Austin, Texas, in 1915 for surface-water studies, for ground-water studies in 1929, and water-quality studies in 1937. Previous investigations of the water resources of Texas were carried out by personnel of the U.S. Geological Survey from the Washington headquarters. The basic-data records and the results of investigations are published by the Geological Survey or by cooperating agencies.</p><p>Geologic investigations were made by personnel from Washington and Denver as early as 1887. The Geophysics Branch of the Geologic Division maintained an office in Austin from 1954 to 1974. Results of these investigations were published by the Geological Survey.</p><p>This bibliography lists alphabetically by author all reports prepared as a result of Geological Survey investigations in Texas, many of which were carried out in cooperation with the Texas Water Development Board and its predecessor agencies, river authorities, other State and local agencies, and other Federal agencies.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U. Two well-field arrangements were used at each site. The initial well-field arrangement at each site consisted of three wells located in a line parallel to the Ohio River. The simulated wells were 350 feet (107m) apart and 500 feet (152m) from the river. Pumping was simulated at a rate of 1,500 gal min<sup>-1</sup> (5,678 1 min<sup>-1</sup>) for 256 days. The second well-field arrangement allowed comparison of drawdown between the initial well-field arrangement and (a) wells located 350 feet (107m) nearer the river, (b) additional wells, located between the initial well field and the bedrock valley wall and (c) wells located on a line perpendicular to the river rather than parallel to the river. Subsidence of the land surface at Seabrook is due principally to the removal of water. Significnt subsidence of the land surface probably began after 1920, and a minimum of about 3.3 feet and a maximum of about 4.3 feet of subsidence had occurred at Seabrook by 1973.</p>\n<p>Probable future subsidence was calculated by two different methods for each of two different loading situations. Combined municipal and industrial use of ground water in the 90-square-mile area has increased from about 180 cubic feet per second in 1960 to nearly 250 cubic feet per second in 1972. The increased pumpage has resulted in continuing water-level declines in some parts of the area. </p><p>A digital model which uses a finite-difference approximation technique to solve partial differential equations of flow through a porous medium was used to evaluate the effects of pumping stresses on water levels. The simulated head values presented in map form generally are in good agreement with potentiometric-surface maps prepared from field measurements.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U. S. The </span><span>atlas was prepared in cooperation with the Water Management District to </span><span>provide pertinent water-quality information relating to the objectives </span><span>of the Florida State Water Resources Act of 1972. Under the provisions </span><span>of this act, the Water Management District is required to establish a </span><span>regional water-use plan, issue permits for water-use and water-resources </span><span>related construction, and authorize the export of water. The data </span><span>presented on these maps will be useful to those concerned with water </span><span>management and use, in assessing regional water quality, and in estab</span><span>lishing a base for comparison with future quality data. </span></p><p><span>The ranges of concentration shown on the maps represent maximum </span><span>concentrations in surface water during the sampling period, January 1965-</span><span>September 1970. Concentrations are plotted at the sampling sites and </span><span>are the major criteria for determining the extent of concentration </span><span>ranges. </span><span>In some cases the drainage basin boundaries are used in </span><span>defining concentration range boundaries because the quantity and quality </span><span>of surface runoff is characteristic of the environment of the basin and </span><span>may be entirely different from the runoff of adjacent basins. Within </span><span>drainage basins, individual streams and local drainage divides define </span><span>concentration boundaries. Some areas, although adjacent to each other </span><span>in the same basin, have entirely different concentration ranges. For </span><span>example, an area containing dissolved-solids concentrations in the </span><span>0-25 mg/1 (milligrams per litre) range may be adjacent to an area in </span><span>which concentrations exceed 100 mg/1, as in the southeast part of </span><span>Jefferson County. Concentration boundaries in these areas were selected </span><span>by extending each range about halfway between the two sampling sites, as </span><span>opposed to grading an intermediate range between them without supporting </span><span>data. The lowered ground-water levels and the consequent </span><span>threat of salt-water intrusion concern farmers and residents who </span><span>depend on ground water for irrigation and domestic purposes. Exten</span><span>sive crop irrigation is continuing; small towns such as Ruskin, River-</span><span>view, Sun City Center, and Apollo Beach are rapidly expanding; and new </span><span>communities are being planned. In addition, there are plans to mine </span><span>the extensive phosphate deposits a few miles east of this heavily-</span><span>f armed area. All these activities require large supplies of fresh </span><span>ground water.</span></p><p><span>The Hillsborough County Commission cooperated with the U. S. Geological Survey to study changes of water levels and water quality in southwest Hillsborough County. The aquifer is only a few feet thick along the Fall Line, where it is near or at the surface, but it thickens and dips to the east. At Franklin where the top of the aquifer is 220 feet (67 metres) below sea level, it is about 600 feet (180 metres) thick. Thirty five miles (56 kilometres) east of Franklin, along the eastern boundary of the model area, the top is about 900 feet (270 metres) below sea level, and the thickness is estimated to be 2,000 feet (610 metres). The aquifer consists of an alternating series of permeable and semipermeable beds, which contain various mixtures of sand, gravel, silt and clay. The sediments are continental stream deposits in the western and central parts of the area, but grade to marine deposits in the eastern part. Transmissivity is zero at or near the Fall Line, and increases eastward to 19,000 cubic feet per day per foot (1,800 cubic metres per day per metre) at Franklin. Further eastward, trans-missivity probably increases slightly, but then decreases as the marine phase is reached. The aquifer is.overlain by a semiper-meable'confining layer and is underlain by relatively impermeable rocks of the pre-Cretaceous basement.</p><p>The model used is the finite-difference digital type described by Pinder (1970). Historical water levels of the aquifer were simulated from 1891 to December 1, 1972. The 1891 water-level surface was developed by running a steady-state version of the Pinder model. Simulation runs from 1891 to 1941, 1970, and 1972 are in good agreement with historical water levels. A modeling factor was used as a multiplier for varying the coefficients of transmissivity and vertical permeability of the confining layer without altering the initial (1891) surface used to start the modeling runs. This technique should be helpful in the development of other models of artesian aquifers.</p><p>Predicitive runs show that, if pumpage continues to increase as it has in the past, serious dewatering of the aquifer will occur at Franklin and possibly at other centers of increased pumpage. However, a predictive run to the year 2022 shows that if pumpage does not increase, additional drawdown would be small.
