Total area is 340 square miles (880 square kilometres). Soils are sandy and excessively well-drained. Crops grown on the outwash would benefit from supplemental irrigation. Irrigation supplies can be obtained from wells in the surface outwash aquifer in significant parts of the large outwash areas near Carlos and Parkers Prairie and the small outwash area near Clotho. Irrigation supplies are unlikely in the outwash areas near Alexandria, Urbank, and Rose City. Major use of ground water for irrigation may lower ground-water levels sufficiently to affect lake and marsh levels and streamflow out of the irrigation areas. The Green River is the largest tributary, and for the 1957-72 water years it contributed 81 percent of the total streamflow and 70 percent of the total load of dissolved solids. The principal constituents in the tributary streamflow are calcium and sulfate during periods of lowest flow and calcium and bicarbonate during periods of highest flow.</p><p>Flaming Gorge Dam was closed in November 1962, and the most significant load changes of chemical constituents due to the net effect of inflow, outflow, leaching, and chemical precipitation in the reservoir have been load changes of sulfate and bicarbonate. The average increase of dissolved load of sulfate in the reservoir for the 1969-72 water years was 110,000 tons (99,790 t) per year, which was 40,000 tons (36,287 t) per year less than for the 1963-66 water years. The average decrease of dissolved load of bicarbonate in the reservoir for 1969-72 was 40,000 tons (36,287 t) per year, which was the same as the decrease for 1963-66.</p><p>Anaerobic conditions were observed in the deep, uncirculated part of the reservoir near the dam during the 1971 and 1972 water years, and anaerobic or near-anaerobic conditions were observed near the confluence of the Blacks Fork and Green River during the summers of 1971 and 1972.</p><p>The water in Flaming Gorge Reservoir is in three distinct layers, and the upper two layers (the epilimnion and the metalimnion) mixed twice during each of the 1971-72 water years. The two circulation periods were in the spring and fall. The water in the deepest layer (the hypolimnion) did not mix with the waters of the upper zones because the density difference was too great and because the deep, narrow shape of the basin probably inhibits mixing.</p><p>The depletion of flow in the Green River downstream from Flaming Gorge Dam between closure of the dam and the end of the 1972 water year was 4,500,000 acre-feet (5,550.8 hm<sup>3</sup>). Of this total, water stored in the reservoir accounted for 3,500,000 acre-feet (4,317.2 hm<sup>3</sup>), evaporation consumed 700,000 acre-feet (863.4 hm<sup>3</sup>), and 300,000 acre-feet (370.0 hm<sup>3</sup>) went into bank storage.</p><p>The net load of dissolved solids added to the river system during the 1963-72 water years, due to leaching and chemical precipitation, was 1,730,000 tons (1,569,421 t). The leaching rate was 200,000 tons (181,436 t) per year for 1963-68,115,000 tons (104,326 t) per year for 1969-70 and 150,000 tons (136,077 t) per year for 1971-72. It appears that the leaching rates should decrease in the future since the reservoir level in 1972 was near maximum pool level.</p><p>The most significant increase in concentration of the chemical constituents in the water below the reservoir involved the sulfate ion, which increased from about 115 milligrams per litre (42 percent of the anions) in 1957 to about 200 milligrams per litre (54 percent), in 1972. It reflects a major tectonic event in the middle and late Paleozoic history of the North American Cordillera. Tailleur and Brosge (1970) interpreted the Endicott as a clastic wedge derived from land to the north during the Late Devonian and from land to the northeast during Early Mississippian, when a shallow sea transgressed the area. In the north-central and eastern parts of the range, the Endicott is composed of three formations, in ascending order, the Upper Devonian Hunt Fork Shale and Kanayut Conglomerate and the Lower Mississippian Kayak Shale; in the western part of the range, the stratigraphic relations of these formations with formations in the Endicott is uncertain. Donovan systematically collected paleocurrent and clast-size data from the Endicott Group along the Brooks Range for Mobil Oil Corporation in 1967 and 1968. Sedimentary rocks ranging from at least Middle Devonian to Cretaceous, and perhaps Early Tertiary age lie between ridge-forming granodiorite intrusions and are cut by thrust faults. The thrust planes dip 10? to 40? to the north- west. Movement of the upper thrust plates has been toward the southeast relative to the lower blocks. \r\n\r\nIf this area is structurally typical of the Hindu-Kush and Karakoram Ranges, then these mountains are much more tectonically disturbed than previously recorded, and suggest compression on a scale compatible with the hypothesis that the Himalayan, Karakoram, and Hindu Kush Ranges form part of a continental collision zone. \r\n\r\nThe thrust faults outline two plates consisting of distinctive sedimentary rocks. The lower thrust plate is about 3,000 feet thick and consists of the isoclinally folded Upper Cretaceous to perhaps lower Tertiary Reshun Formation. It has overridden the Paleozoic metasedimentary rocks of the Chitral Slate unit. This thrust plate is, in turn, overridden by an 8,000-foot thick sequence consisting largely of Devonian to Carboniferous limestones and quartzites.\r\n\r\nA key factor in the tectonic processes has been the relatively soft and plastic lithology of the siltstone layers in the Reshun Formation which have acted as lubricants along the principal thrust faults, where they are commonly found today as fault slices and smears. \r\n\r\nThe stratigraphic sequence, in the central Mastuj Valley was tentatively divided into 9 mapped units. The fossiliferous shales and carbonates of the recently defined Shogram Formation and the clastlcs of the Reshun Formation have been fitted into a sequence of sedimentary rocks that has a total thick- ness of at least 13,000 feet and ranges in age from Devonian to Neogene. The metamorphic units consist of probable correlatives of the Precambrian(?) Salkhala Series; the upper Paleozoic, slightly metamorphosed schists, quartzites, and calcareous rocks of the Chalt Schist; the higher metamorphosed (garnet and staurolite grades) schists, gneisses, and marbles of the Baltit Group; the Pasu Slate; and the Triassic(?) and older(?) greenstone complex consisting in large part of metavolcanic rocks.</p><p>The metamorphism of the area is due at least in part to the intrusions of two huge silicic to intermediate batholiths of Cretaceous to Tertiary age composed largely of biotite granodiorite.</p><p>The structural grain is west-northwest throughout the area and represents a part of the structural pattern whose focus is the Hazara-Kashmir syntaxial bend. Although steep faults and isoclinal folds are present, no large thrust faults were seen. The area apparently is structurally less complicated than comparable parts of the Hindu Kush mountains farther west in Chitral State. Deeply incised streams and elevated terraces indicate very recent uplift of considerable magnitude.</p><p>Although traces of potential ore minerals are common in the Gilgit-Hispar area, deposits of possible commercial value were not seen. Heavy-mineral samples of stream sands contain fairly high concentration of scheelite. The radioactivity of the stream sands is in large&nbsp; part due to the thorium and uranium content of zircon.
