The first detailed analyses were reported by Gooch and Whitfield (1888). Allen and Day (1935) were second. White, Brannock, and Murata (1956) and Morey, Fournier, Hemley, and Rowe (1961) reported field analyses of dissolved silica content of hot springs. White, Hem, and Waring (1963) reported six new chemical analyses. Noguchi and Nix (1963) reported partial analyses of five geysers. Rowe, Fournier, and Morey (1973) published the analyses of 166 samples from 89 different locations and the previous analyses of the same hot springs and geysers from 1888 to their study. The analyses compiled here are from 541 samples from 405 different locations of streams, rivers, cold springs, warm springs, hot springs, pools, and geysers.</p><p>We are indebted to many colleagues at the Survey who have contributed to this report. Upper Cretaceous deposits, which dip to the southwest at about 35 feet per mile, range in thickness (d from about 400 feet in the northern part of the county to about 2,300 feet in the southernmost part. Most wells tapping Upper Cretaceous deposits range in depth from 20 to 950 feet; the deposits are potential sources of water to depths of 2,000 feet. Yields of wells that tap individual aquifers in the Upper Cretaceous Series range from about 0.5 to 2 mgd (million gallons per day). Water levels in wells tapping the Upper Cretaceous deposits range from 40 feet above land surface in low areas along the streams to 245 feet below land surface in upland areas.</p><p>Beds of sand and gravel in the alluvial deposits underlying the major stream valleys and terraces along these valleys are sources of water to wells. Where these beds are hydraulically connected to streams, they potentially will yield large supplies of water to wells.</p><p>Annual rainfall averages about 55 inches and the average rate of runoff per square mile is about 0.8 mgd. The Cahaba River and Oakmulgee Creek are the largest sources of surface water in the county. The Cahaba River at Sprott has an average flow of about 1,300 mgd and a 7-day low flow (7-day Q<sub>2</sub>) of 200 mgd. Cakmulgee Creek near Perryville has an average flow of about 140 mgd and a 7-day Q<sub>2</sub> of about 15 mgd. the total average flow of all streams in the county is about 1,300 mgd.</p><p>Water from aquifers and streams in Perry County is chemically suitable for most uses. Water from wells ranges from soft to moderately hard but locally is hard and has an iron content that exceeds 0. 3 mg/l (milligrams per liter). Methods are described that deal with unique boundary conditions and aquifer anisotropy at two sites. Extreme aquifer heterogeneity precluded the determination of aquifer coefficients at one of the sites and probably affected the results of the tests at the other two. Therefore, the calculated aquifer coefficients reported should be regarded only as estimates. Calculated coefficients of horizontal hydraulic conductivity ranged from 0.025 to 3,500 gallons per day per square foot (0.0010 to 143 metres per day) and calculated coefficients of vertical hydraulic conductivity ranged from 0.05 to 23,000 gallons per day per square foot (0.0021 to 943 metres per day). Ratio of horizontal to vertical hydraulic conductivity ranged from 0.09 to 2.9.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U. S. Two or three runs at different discharge rates\nwere made in 13 subreaches on the 7 streams except for a subreach of\nEllicott ·creek. In the Ellicott Creek subreach from the Lehigh Valley\nRailroad bridge (above the Tonawanda Sewer District No. 3 sewage treatment\nplant) to the mouth, only one time-of-travel run could be made\nbecause of the unexpected shutdown of the treatment plant.</p>\n<br>\n<p>On Cattaraugus Creek, the reach was extended to Versailles after\nthe first run. To complete the three runs, a partial run was made on\nNovember 16, 1964. On Ellicott Creek, in the subreach between Amherst\nsewage treatment plant and Sweet Home Road, a partial run was made to\ncheck a previous run.</p>\n<br>\n<p>Time-of-travel data for several subreaches are depicted in a series\nof graphs that show time-distance relationships for several discharge\nrates.</p>\n<br>\n<p>Flow-duration curves and minimum average consecutive 7-day discharges\nfor a 10-year return period were dete'rmined for one site each on Cattaraugus,\nCayuga, and Murder Creeks, and for two sites on Tonawanda and Ellicott\nCreeks. The 7-day frequency data were also developed for a site on\nBuffalo River.</p>\n<br>\n<p>Effluent discharge was measured at nine treatment plants. Considerable\nfluctuation in discharge was recorded at some of the plants.</p>\n<br>\n<p>In the Cazenovia Creek basin, time of travel was determined on the\nEast Branch for 16.45 miles, on the West Branch for 13.8 miles, and on\nCazenovia Creek for 16.62 miles. Three runs at different discharge rates\nwere made at most subreaches. On those subreaches where less than three\nruns were made, a comparison of the relationship with other sites was\nmade to determine the shape of the curves.</p>\n<br>\n<p>Time-of-travel data are shown in graphic form depicting the timedistance\nrelationships for the three major reaches in the Cazenovia Creek\nbasin for several discharge rates.
