Most of this gravity relief is indirectly related to regional topographic relief or lithologic variations that are revealed in the rock outcrops. However, some significant features of the gravity map are not easily explained by the map geology, and several important features on the geologic map seem to have little gravitational expression. These failures in correlation suggest that there may be considerable differences between the deep and shallow structures of the quadrangle. Two or three runs at different discharge rates\nwere made in 13 subreaches on the 7 streams except for a subreach of\nEllicott ·creek. In the Ellicott Creek subreach from the Lehigh Valley\nRailroad bridge (above the Tonawanda Sewer District No. 3 sewage treatment\nplant) to the mouth, only one time-of-travel run could be made\nbecause of the unexpected shutdown of the treatment plant.</p>\n<br>\n<p>On Cattaraugus Creek, the reach was extended to Versailles after\nthe first run. To complete the three runs, a partial run was made on\nNovember 16, 1964. On Ellicott Creek, in the subreach between Amherst\nsewage treatment plant and Sweet Home Road, a partial run was made to\ncheck a previous run.</p>\n<br>\n<p>Time-of-travel data for several subreaches are depicted in a series\nof graphs that show time-distance relationships for several discharge\nrates.</p>\n<br>\n<p>Flow-duration curves and minimum average consecutive 7-day discharges\nfor a 10-year return period were dete'rmined for one site each on Cattaraugus,\nCayuga, and Murder Creeks, and for two sites on Tonawanda and Ellicott\nCreeks. The 7-day frequency data were also developed for a site on\nBuffalo River.</p>\n<br>\n<p>Effluent discharge was measured at nine treatment plants. Considerable\nfluctuation in discharge was recorded at some of the plants.</p>\n<br>\n<p>In the Cazenovia Creek basin, time of travel was determined on the\nEast Branch for 16.45 miles, on the West Branch for 13.8 miles, and on\nCazenovia Creek for 16.62 miles. Three runs at different discharge rates\nwere made at most subreaches. On those subreaches where less than three\nruns were made, a comparison of the relationship with other sites was\nmade to determine the shape of the curves.</p>\n<br>\n<p>Time-of-travel data are shown in graphic form depicting the timedistance\nrelationships for the three major reaches in the Cazenovia Creek\nbasin for several discharge rates. It is a small owl, 20 cm (8 in) in length from the tip of the bill to the tip of the tail, with a wing span of 56 cm (22 in); it has yellow eyes and prominent ear tufts (see Frontispiece). Although the species is common throughout much of North America, it has not been studied intensively, particularly over a long period. The published literature is concerned mostly with food habits, color phase, taxonomy, and miscellaneous observations. Breeding biology and population dynamics have received little attention. </span></p><p><span>This report presents the basic life history and population information about screech owls in northern Ohio over a 30-yr period. The owls studied were nesting in boxes (Fig. 1) established for wood ducks (</span><i><span>Aix</span></i> <i><span>sponsa</span></i><span>) along rivers, creeks, and marshes in a four-county area (Ottawa, Sandusky, Wood, and Lucas Counties) near Lake Erie (Fig. 2). No special trapping techniques were required as the screech owls readily used these nesting boxes and could be easily captured while in them. More than 3,000 owls were captured and banded; 500 were recaptured after the initial banding, some 10 or 15 times. But more than simple preservation of such an environment is involved in its inclusion in our National Park System. Its isolation from the mainland provides an almost untouched laboratory for research in the natural sciences, especially those studies whose very nature depends upon such isolation. </p><p>One excellent example of such research is the intensive study of the predator-prey relationship of the timber wolf and moose, long sponsored by the National Park Service and Purdue University. In probably no other place in North America are the necessary ecological conditions for such a study so admirably fulfilled as on Isle Royale. The development of a natural laboratory with such conditions is ultimately dependent upon geologic processes and events that although not unique in themselves, produced in their interplay a unique result, the island archipelago as we know it today, with its hills and valleys, swamps and bogs the ecological framework of the plant and animal world. </p><p>Even the most casual visitor can hardly fail to be struck by the fiordlike nature of many of the bays, the chains of fringing islands, the ridge-and-valley topography, and the linear nature of all these features. The distinctive topography of the archipelago is, of course, only the latest manifestation of geologic processes in operation since time immemorial. Fragments of geologic history going back over a billion years can be read from the rocks of the island, and with additional data from other parts of the Lake Superior region, we can fill in some of the story of Isle Royale. After more than a hundred years of study by man, the story is still incomplete. But then, geologic stories are seldom complete, and what we do know allows a deeper appreciation of one of our most naturally preserved parks and whets our curiosity about the missing Gould, of the University of Michigan, was the first to recognize the geologic and scenic values of the Arches area in eastern Utah and to urge its creation as a national monument. Mrs. Faun McConkie Tanner told me that Professor Gould, who had done a thesis problem in the nearby La Sal Mountains, was first taken through the area by Marv Turnbow, third owner of Wolfe cabin. Two procedures are available for determining 10 constituents: one, from a single solution prepared by a nitric-acid dissolution of a lithium metaborate-lithium tetraborate fusion, and the other, a two-solution method in which one portion of sample is dissolved in an HF-H<sub>2</sub>SO<sub>4</sub>,-HNO<sub>3</sub> mixture and another portion is fused with NaOH. In both techniques, SiO<sub>2</sub>, Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>, Fe<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>, TiO<sub>2</sub>, P<sub>2</sub>O<sub>5</sub>, and MnO are determined spectrophotometrically, and CaO, MgO, Na<sub>2</sub>O, and K<sub>2</sub>O are determined by AAS. Separate portions of samples are used for the following determinations: FeO by titration with K<sub>2</sub>Cr<sub>2</sub>O<sub>7</sub> after decomposition with HF and H<sub>2</sub>SO<sub>4</sub>; total H<sub>2</sub>O by its weight when evolved on heating a mixture of sample plus flux; H<sub>2</sub>O by loss of weight at 110° overnight; CO<sub>2</sub> by its volume upon evolution with acid; fluorine by a new indirect measurement of SiO<sub>2</sub> evolved with fluorine on heating; and. sulfur by a new procedure based on a turbidimetric measurement of BaSO<sub>4</sub>, after an aqua regia attack.
