Three geohydrologic terranes, which underlie large parts of the basin, are described in terms of their aquifer characteristics and of the magnitude and duration of their base runoff: (1) fractured rock having a thin regolith, (2) fractured rock having a thick regolith, and (3) carbonate rock. \r\n\r\nCrystalline rock in the mountainous part of the Blue Ridge province and shale with tight sandstone in the folded Appalachians are covered with thin regolith. Water is stored in and moves through fairly unmodified fractures. Average transmissivity (T) is estimated to be 150 feet squared per day, and average storage coefficient (S), 0.005. Base runoff declines rapidly from its high levels during spring and is poorly sustained during the summer season of high evapotranspiration. The rocks in this geohydrologic terrane are the least effective in the basin for the development of water supplies and as a source of dry-weather streamflow. \r\n\r\nCrystalline and sedimentary rocks in the Piedmont province and in the lowland part of the Blue Ridge province are covered with thick regolith. Water is stored in and moves through both the regolith and the underlying fractured rock. Estimated average values for aquifer characteristics are T, 200 feet squared per day, and S, 0.01. Base runoff is better sustained in this terrane than in the thin-regolith terrane and on the average .is about twice as great. \r\n\r\nCarbonate rock, in which fractures have been widened selectively by solution, especially near streams, has estimated average aquifer characteristics of T, 500 feet squared per day, and S, 0.03-0.04. This rock is the most effective in the basin in terms of water supply and base runoff. Where its fractures have not been widened by solution, the carbonate rock is a fractured-rock aquifer much like the noncarbonate rock. At low values the frequency of specific capacities of wells is much the same in all rocks in the basin, but high values of specific capacity are as much as 10 times more frequent in carbonate rock than in noncarbonate rock. Nearly all the large springs and high-capacity wells in the basin are in carbonate rock. Base runoff from the carbonate rock is better sustained during dry weather and on the average is about three times as great as base runoff from fractured rock having a thin regolith. \r\n\r\nThe potential role of these water-bearing terranes in water management probably lies in the local development of large water supplies from the carbonate rock and in the possible manipulation of underground storage for such purposes as providing space for artificial recharge of ground water and providing ground water to be used for the augmentation of low streamflow. The chief water-quality problems in the basin--acidic mine-drainage water in the western part of the basin, local highly mineralized ground water, and the high nitrate content of ground water in some of the densely populated parts of the basin--would probably have little adverse affect on the use of ground water for low-flow augmentation.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Govt. The favorable climate and the perennial supply of irrigation water made available through the canals instituted the beginning of intensive farming. However, because of generally poor drainage and the high rate of canal leakage, the water table began to rise. As the population increased and agriculture expanded, the demand for irrigation water soon exceeded the available supply. Spreading of the canal supply to meet the expanded needs locally created shortages that prevented adequate leaching. Increased evaporation from the rising water table further contributed to the progressive accumulation of soluble salts in the soil. By the late 1930's the combined effect of waterlogging and salinity had reduced the agricultural productivity of the region to one of the lowest in the world. \r\n\r\nIn 1954, after several unsuccessful projects were undertaken to reclaim affected areas and to stop the progressive encroachment of waterlogging and salinization, the Government of Pakistan in cooperation with the U.S. International Cooperation Administration undertook a study of the geology and hydrology of the Indus Plain that ultimately resulted in the formulation of a ground-water reclamation program. The principal feature of the program is the utilization of a network of deep wells spaced about a mile apart for the dual purpose of lowering the water table and for providing supplemental irrigation water. Through financial assistance and technical and engineering support principally from the United States, construction began in 1960 on the first of 18 proposed reclamation projects that eventually will include 21 million acres and more than 28,000 wells having an installed capacity of more than 100,000 cubic feet per second. \r\n\r\nAn area of about 1.3 million acres a few miles west of the City of Lahore was selected for the pilot project. The first Salinity Control and Reclamation Project (SCARP-l) was completed in 1962. Within the project area about 2,000 wells were drilled as deep as 350 feet and equipped with turbine pumps having a capacity of up to 5 cubic feet per second each and a combined operating capacity of about 3.5 million acre-feet per year. \r\n\r\nTo July 1968 pumping from project wells and from private and other governmental agency wells supplied about 12 million acre-feet of water. This pumping more than doubled the available irrigation supply and lowered the water table to a depth of 10 feet or more below most of the project area. As a result, approximately 66 percent of the 400,000 acres of land damaged by waterlogging and accumulation of excessive salt was wholly or partially reclaimed. The cropping intensity was increased from about 77 percent in 1962 to 101 percent in July 1968, and the annual value of crops increased \r\n186 percent over 1962. \r\n\r\nAnnual water budgets for the first 6 years of project operation indicate that pumping caused a decrease in annual ground-water outflow from the project area from about 57,000 acre-feet to 32,000 acre-feet, caused an increase in annual ground-water inflow to the project area from 35,0'00 acre-feet to 52,000 acre-feet, and depleted about 1.71 million acre-.feet of groundwater storage. Net annual recharge to the ground-water reservoir during this same period ranged from a high of slightly more than 2 million acre-feet in 1964 to a low of about 1 million acre-feet in 1965. The budgets suggest that perhaps as much as half the net canal' inflow to the project area is lost through leakage. Predominantly fine-grained alluvium mantles much of the limestone and marl area and fills overdeepened south-trending valleys to depths of as much as 100 feet. Rainfall follows an orographic pattern ranging from about 30 inches in eastern St. Croix to 55 inches in the northwestern mountains. \r\n\r\nFour streams, all heading in the Northside Range, have intermittent reaches. All other streams in St. Croix are ephemeral, flowing only for a few hours or days following major rainstorms. Flow in the intermittent streams ranges from about 1 to 9 percent of the total rainfall and usually half or more of the flow is storm runoff resulting from two or three major storms. Storm runoff from individual storms seldom exceeds 5 percent of the rainfall. Only from 2 storms, one of 5 inches and the other of 7 inches in less than 48 hours, did runoff reach 20 percent, both times on River Gut at Golden Grove. The lack of storm runoff is attributed to the capability of the soil zone to accept large volumes of water and deficient soil moisture most of the year. \r\n\r\nThe dissolved-solids content of the water of St. Croix. reflects the influence of the sea and land. Bulk precipitation is believed to be the source of the initial mineral content of the island water. Additional mineralization, particularly of ground water, results from the solution of soluble salts, mixing with residual sea water, and concentration by evapotranspiration. Water in the volcanic rocks is basically a calcium bicarbonate sodium chloride type with dissolved solids ranging from 500 to 1,000 mg/l (milligrams per liter), and chloride concentration of 100 to 300 mg/1. By contrast, water in the limestone is a sodium bicarbonate sodium chloride type with dissolved-solids content ranging from less than 1,000 to more than 20,000 mg/1 and chloride concentration from less than 100 to more than 10,000 mg/l. The mineral content of water in the limestone invariably increases with depth. Water in the alluvial deposits and in the streams usually reflects the characteristics of water from the adjacent bedrock. \r\n\r\nThe retention of large volumes of rainfall in the soil zone from which it is evaporated and transpired by plants greatly reduces the water available for recharge to the aquifers of the island. Estimates of effective recharge to the aquifers range from less than 0.5 inch in some volcanic and marl rocks to 5 inches annually in more porous limestone and alluvium. Long-term yield from the aquifers is also affected by their storage capacity which may range from less than 1 percent in volcanic rocks and marl to 10 to 15 percent in limestone and alluvium. The ground-water potential (equivalent to the quantity of recharge) of St. Croix is estimated at 3.9 mgd (million gallons per day)--0.9 mgd from the Northside Range (Area 1) ; 0.4 mgd from the East End Range (Area 2), and 2.6 mgd from the central lowlands (Area 3). Most areas where major ground-water supplies are .available, principally in Central St. Croix, have already been developed. The Castle Coakley area, with a potential yield of 400,000 gpd, is the only major ground-water area still undeveloped. \r\n\r\nThe ground-water potential could be increased by reducing the brush and forest cover thus reducing water losses from transpiration; artificial recharge of alluvial aquifer by water spreading; utilizing streamflow (including storm runoff) or treated sewage effluent; or by lowering the ground-water level adjacent to streams to induce infiltration. \r\n\r\nAdvancements in desalination have made the brackish ground water in the Kingshill Marl (estimated at 35 billion recoverable gallons by Robison, 1972) a potential source of water. Recovery of this water would partly de-water the aquifer, which would cause water of better quality in the overlying rocks to","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/ofr73137","usgsCitation":"Jordan, D.G., 1975, A survey of the water resources of St. Croix, Virgin Islands: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 73-137, 131 p. part col.ill., part col.maps ; 28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr73137.","productDescription":"131 p. part col.ill., part col.maps ; 28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":162666,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1973/0137/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":84890,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1973/0137/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":84887,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1973/0137/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":84888,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1973/0137/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":84889,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1973/0137/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b17e4b07f02db6a5dae","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Jordan, Donald George","contributorId":44127,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Jordan","given":"Donald","email":"","middleInitial":"George","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":236889,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Water for domestic and stock supplies generally can be obtained from wells in either of the above deposits. Water for municipal, industrial, and irrigation supplies generally can be obtained in limited quantities from the unconsolidated deposits of sand and gravel and in adequate quantities from the consolidated rocks in the southeastern part of the area. </p><p>The unconsolidated deposits in the basin receive about 226,000 acre- feet of recharge annually, and about 775,000 acre-feet of water is in storage in the deposits. An additional 77 million acre-feet is in storage in the consolidated aquifers. In 1968 about 7,500 acre-feet of ground water was withdrawn for all purposes. About 6,300 acre-feet of surface water and 1,400 acre-feet of ground water was withdrawn for irrigation of 7,600 acres of cropland. The total annual ground-water withdrawal for irrigation may be as much as 20,000 acre-feet by year 2000.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr75366","collaboration":"Prepared by the U.S. Geological Survey for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers","usgsCitation":"Morton, R.B., and Fader, S.W., 1975, Ground water in the Grand (Neosho) River basin, Kansas and Oklahoma: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 75-366, Report: ii, 35 p.; 4 Plates: 41.10 x 34.85 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr75366.","productDescription":"Report: ii, 35 p.; 4 Plates: 41.10 x 34.85 inches or smaller","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":148753,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0366/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":346221,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0366/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":346222,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0366/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":346223,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0366/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":346224,"rank":5,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0366/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":346225,"rank":6,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0366/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Kansas, Oklahoma","otherGeospatial":" Grand (Neosho) River basin","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -96.2841796875,\n              39.01918369029134\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.558837890625,\n              39.11301365149975\n            ],\n            [\n              -97.05322265625,\n              39.01918369029134\n            ],\n            [\n              -97.415771484375,\n              38.839707613545144\n            ],\n            [\n              -97.55859375,\n              38.496593518947584\n            ],\n            [\n              -97.349853515625,\n              38.25543637637947\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.75659179687499,\n              37.97018468810549\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.053466796875,\n              37.579412513438385\n            ],\n            [\n              -95.712890625,\n              36.79169061907076\n            ],\n            [\n              -95.77880859375,\n              36.28856319836237\n            ],\n            [\n              -95.77880859375,\n              35.97800618085566\n            ],\n            [\n              -95.614013671875,\n              35.585851593232356\n            ],\n            [\n              -95.25146484374999,\n              35.44277092585766\n            ],\n            [\n              -94.658203125,\n              35.496456056584165\n            ],\n            [\n              -94.515380859375,\n              35.82672127366604\n            ],\n            [\n              -94.647216796875,\n              36.677230602346214\n            ],\n            [\n              -94.71313476562499,\n              37.63163475580643\n            ],\n            [\n              -94.833984375,\n              38.20365531807149\n            ],\n            [\n              -95.06469726562499,\n              38.61687046392973\n            ],\n            [\n              -95.49316406249999,\n              38.839707613545144\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.2841796875,\n              39.01918369029134\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b25e4b07f02db6aed93","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Morton, Robert B.","contributorId":50899,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Morton","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":170539,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Fader, Stuart W.","contributorId":102091,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Fader","given":"Stuart","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":170540,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

General conclusions drawn from the study are: (1) Although aluminous chromite deposits exist, no minable deposits of refractory-grade material have been made found to date; (2) small but minable reserves\nof elemental sulfur, fluorspar, and magnesite are available; (3) detailed mapping, prospecting, and sampling are required to fully assess the ore reserves in known deposits, and (4) field examination of some of the other deposits described herein may call for additional exploration which may eliminate them from further consideration as minable deposits. The sulfur deposits at Koh-i-Sultan volcano in the Chagai District of Quetta Division are the only assured source of elemental\nsulfur in Pakistan. Indicated reserves are 85,000 tons of less than 50 percent sulfur ore of solfataric origin. The deposits are currently being mined.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr75496","collaboration":"Prepared under the auspices of the Government of Pakistan and the Agency for International Development","usgsCitation":"Nagell, R.H., 1975, Sulfur, fluorspar, magnesite, and aluminous chromite in Pakistan: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 75-496, iii, 34 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr75496.","productDescription":"iii, 34 p.","numberOfPages":"46","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":148468,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0496/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":271061,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0496/report.pdf"}],"country":"Pakistan","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ 60.87,23.69 ], [ 60.87,37.08 ], [ 77.83,37.08 ], [ 77.83,23.69 ], [ 60.87,23.69 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b05e4b07f02db69982c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Nagell, Raymond H.","contributorId":70777,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Nagell","given":"Raymond","email":"","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":170624,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
