However, only sphene is present in the lowerr grade blueschist assemblages. In many areas of the world these blueschists pass into, or are in fault contact with, higher grade glaucophane schists, rutile-bearing amphibolites, and eclogites. The origin of the rutile may be related to a prograde metamorphic reaction that involves the alteration of sphene to rutile, but few data are available to support this hypothesis. It seems more probable that the rutile crystallized directly from ilmenite or titanium-rich clinopyroxene and magnetite in basalts and gabbros during the conversion of these rocks to amphibolites and eclogites containing omphacite, amphibolite, and garnet. Rutile in the higher grade blueschists, regardless of its origin, is a potential titanium resource and is currently being mined from eclogite and glaucophane-eclogite rocks in the Soviet Union. Records are included for 163 gaging stations of which 143 are streamflow discharge stations and 20 are reservoir or lake stations; also are included records for 23 low-flow partial-record stations, 127 crest-stage partial-record stations, and 2 flood-hydrograph stations. Locations of gaging stations are shown in figure 1. A few pertinent stations (not included above) in bordering States are also included in this report. The records were collected and computed by the Water Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey under the direction of Charles W. Lane, district chief. These data represent that part of the National Water Data System collected by the U.S. Geological Survey and cooperating State and Federal agencies in Kansas.</p><p>Beginning with the 1961 water year, streamflow records and related data have been released by the Geological Survey in annual reports on a State-boundary basis. These reports are for limited distribution and are designed primarily for rapid release of data shortly after the end of the water year.</p><p>Records of discharge and stage of streams, and contents and stage of lakes and reservoirs are published in a series of U.S. Geological Survey water-supply papers entitled, \"Surface Water Supply of the United States.\" Through September 30, 1960, these water-supply papers were in an annual series and since then are in a 5-year series. In Part 1, records are included for 355 gaging stations of which 74 are streamflow discharge stations, 8 are stage only streamflow stations, and 11 are reservoir or lake stations; also are included records for 110 flood-profile partial-record stations, 83 crest-stage partial-record stations, and 69 miscellaneous sites Locations of continuous-record gaging stations are shown in figure 1 and locations of crest-stage partial-record stations are shown in figure 2. In Part 2, water-quality data on chemical, physical, and biological characteristics of surface water were collected from designated sampling sites at predetermined intervals such as once daily, weekly, monthly, or less frequently, and at some sites data were recorded on punched paper tape at 15- or 60-minute intervals. Records are given for sampling stations of which 12 are continuous-record stations, 50 are partial-record stations, and 103 are miscellaneous sites. Locations of water-quality stations are shown in figure 3. A few pertinent stations in bordering States are also included in this report. The records were collected and computed by the Water Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey under the direction of Albert N. Cameron, district chief. These data represent that part of the National Water Data System collected by the U.S. Geological Survey and cooperating State and Federal agencies in No high-grade deposits have been .reported from these ,areas and if deposits are developed they will likely be low-grade, high-tonnage, disseminated deposits. Those localities reported from Chitral State are too remote and inaccessible to be of interest now. All lead localities found to date are of minor importance; there has been small production at one .locality in Chasai District and in the southern part of the Hazara District. This area could contain from 0.3 to 1.4 billion barrels of oil and from 0.6 to 2.7 trillion cubic feet of natural gas depending upon the statistical confidence level indicated.</p><p>The known geology of this submerged area, is extrapolated to the offshore from onshore data. The sedimentary rocks are as old as Triassic and as young as Pleistocene. The Mesozoic strata include volcanic rocks, volcanoclastic and marine clastic sediments. Tertiary, rocks from which the oil and gas in Upper Cook Inlet are produced, consist of nonmarine conglomerate, sandstone, siltstone and coal. The potential objective section for oil and gas in this OCS area ranges from Middle Jurassic through the Tertiary.</p><p>The present structural configuration of this area is a northeast trending trough filled with Tertiary sediments. The trough is flanked by two major faults, the Bruin Bay fault on the northwest and the Border Ranges fault on the southeast. Between these faults is the OCS area containing anticlinal structures and faults which may be traps for hydrocarbons.</p><p>Potential geologic hazards are present in this area. It is an area of intense tectonism expressed as seismic activity (earthquakes) and volcanic eruptions which produce many natural disturbances including tsunamis. Minor amounts of it are produced together with tantalum from columbite-tantalite concentrates from pegmatites and placers adjacent to them, in the Sao Joao del Rei district in south-central Minas Gerais. All the niobium and tantalum produced in Brazil is exported. The only pyrochlore mined is from the Barreiro carbonatite deposit near Araxa in Minas Gerais where concentrates and ferroniobium are produced. Exploration work for pyrochlore and other mineral resources are being undertaken on other carbonatites, particularly at Catalao I in southeast Goias and at Tapira and Serra Negra in western Minas Gerais. Annual production and export from the Barreiro deposit are about 8,000 metric tons of pyrochlore concentrate containing about 60 percent Nb205 and about 2,700 metric tons of ferroniobium with 63 percent Nb2O5.\r\n\r\nThe annual production capacity of the Barreiro plant is 18,000 tons of concentrate and 4,000 tons of ferroniobium. Ore reserves of the Barreiro deposit in all categories are 380 million tons with percent Nb2O5. Annual production of tantalite-columbite from the Sao Joao del Rei district, most of which is exported to the United States, is about 290 tons, of which about 79 percent is tantalite and about percent is columbite.
