The Wild Rogue Wilderness is located in Coos and Curry Counties, southwestern Oregon and covers part of the Bone Mountain, Marial,  and Agness 15' quadrangles (fig. 1). It is an elongate area, 19 mi by 0.8 to 3 mi (31 km by 1.3 to 5 km) and includes approximately 35,818 acres extending from the town of Agness northeast to Mount Bolivar.  The area is characterized by several diverse geologic terranes described in detail by Gray and others (1982). 

This paper summarizes semiquantitative chemical analyses of 256 rocks for 23 elements and analyses of 40 stream-sediment samples for 33 elements as presented in Gray and Peterson (1982).

The Lye Brook Wilderness contains no significant mineral deposits. Although the Cheshire Quartzite is a potential source of low-grade silica sand and crops out in a large area within the wilderness, its degree of induration and relative inaccessibility make its use prohibitive. No major concentation of base metals exist within the Precambrian rocks, although they contain the highest metal concentrations within the wilderness. Uranium mineralization is not extensive in the Precambrian rocks, despite the occurrence of significant deposits nearby.

The Wilderness Act (Public Law 88-577, September 3, 1964) and related acts require the U.S. Geological Survey and the U.S. Bureau of Mines to survey certain areas on Federal lands to determine their mineral resource potential. Results must be made available to the public and be submitted to the President and the Congress. This report presents the results of a geochemical survey of the Arnold Mesa Roadless Area (U.S. Forest Service number 03092) in the Prescott and Tonto National Forests, Yavapai County, Arizona. The Arnold Mesa Roadless Area was classified as a further planning area during the Second Roadless Area Review and Evaluation (RARE II) by the U.S. Forest Service, January 1979.

During 1980 the U.S. Geological Survey and the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) conducted field investigations to evaluate the mineral resource potential of the Arnold Mesa Roadless Area, Yavapai County, Arizona. Field studies included geologic mapping (Wolrfe, 1983), aeromagnetic mapping (Davis and Wolfe, 1983), geochemical sampling (this report), and a survey of known mines and prospects (McColly and Korzeb, 1981).

\n

The Arnold Mesa Roadless Area comprises about 28,000 acres (11,300 hectares) in and along the flanks of the Black Hills south of Camp Verde, Arizona. The Black Hills form a northwest-trending drainage divide, between the Agua Fria drainage on the west and Verde River on the east, that extends through the roadless area. The crest and southwest flank of the divide within the study area are moderately dissected, gently rolling uplands. The northeast flank is steep terrain that forms the western wall of the Verde Valley. The northeast flank has a total relief within the study area of almost 4,000 ft (more than 1,200 m) and is deeply incised by the canyons of Gap and Chasm Creeks. Unpaved roads provide access to much of the perimeter of the Arnold Mesa Roadless Area, but the interior is accessible only by foot, horse, or helicopter.

On the basis of geologic, geochemical, and geophysical investigations and a survey of mines and prospects, the mineral resource potential for gold, silver, lead, zinc, tungsten, and barite of the Blanco Mountain and Black Canyon Roadless Areas is judged to be low to moderate, except for one local area that has high potential for gold and tungsten resources.

\n

A geochemical survey detected moderately anomalous amounts of lead, copper, and zinc and less anomalous concentrations of tungsten, gold, and silver. Elements in anomalous samples were grouped as suites known to form in various ore deposits. Four element suites that may be indicative of mineralization are recognized in the White Mountains: (1) lead, zinc, and silver in carbonate rocks; (2) copper, barite, and lead in veins and replacement bodies; (3) tungsten, molybdenum, and bismuth in skarns; and (4) gold and arsenic in mineralized quartz veins. The assessment of the areas of resource potential was made in part by the application of ore deposit models to the geochemical results.

\n

A mineral deposit survey by the U.S. Bureau of Mines indicates that there are no properties with identified mineral resources in the Blanco Mountain Roadless Area. There is one active placer claim. In the Black Canyon Roadless Area, two properties have 40,000 tons of indicated and inferred low-grade gold, silver, or lead-bearing rock. Five properties near this roadless area have 150,000 tons of indicated and inferred low-grade gold, silver, lead, zinc, or tungsten-bearing rock. About 90 percent of this tonnage is estimated to occur at the Mirage-Mariposa and the Hope mines.

\n

The roadless areas have no known resource potential for geothermal energy, coal, oil, or gas.

A geologic and geochemical investigation and a survey of mines and prospects have been conducted to evaluate the mineral resource potential of the Spanish Peaks Wilderness Study Area, Huerfano and Las Animas Counties, in south-central Colorado. The·study area is underlain by sedimentary rocks of Paleozoic to Tertiary age (Johnson, 1969). Stocks and dikes were emplaced between 20 and 25 m.y. ago (Smith, 1979) forming East and West Spanish Peaks and the White Peaks.

\n

Most of the study area lacks significant geochemical anomalies and has a low mineral potential. Anomalous concentrations of gold, silver, copper, lead, and zinc in the rocks and drainage basins in the vicinity of the old mines and prospects on West Spanish Peak indicate a moderate potential for small mineralized veins in this area. Ore-bearing veinlets have been worked in the past, primarily for silver and lead; however, the sparsity, small size, and low grade of the veins diminish their significance.

\n

The depth of several thousand feet at which coal may underlie the surface rocks of the study area makes it a resource with little likelihood of development. The potential for oil and gas appears low because of the apparent lack of structural traps and the intense igneous activity in the area.

The Mount Eddy and Castle , Crags Roadless Areas occupy 9,600 acres (39 km2) and 3,300 acres (13 km2), respectively, in Shasta, Siskiyou, and Trinity Counties, Calif., approximately 8 mi (13 km) west of the towns of Mount Shasta City and Dunsmuir (fig. 1). Access is provided by secondary roads and trails from Interstate Highway 5, which passes through Mount Shasta City and Dunsmuir. The areas are located in rugged terrane in the easternmost part of the Klamath Mountains where altitudes range from about 2,500 ft (7.62 m) in the southern Castle Crags area to 9,025 ft (2,751 m) on Mount Eddy. Manzanita and other brush are ubiquitous at lower elevations whereas vegetation is lacking at higher elevations except for occasional gnarled conifers and ground-level plants.
