The Rio Grande Rift, one of the major geologic structures of the Southwest, cuts through the center of New Mexico from north to south. The rift is also referred to as the Rio Grande Trench and as the Rio Grande Trough. It extends from the northern end of the San Luis Valley in Colorado southward 725 kilometres along the course of the Rio Grande River through New Mexico to near El Paso, Tex. The Rio Grande Rift is not a single trough but a series of north-trending basins arranged en echelon and separated by narrow constrictions or channels. The rift follows the western flank of the southern Rocky Mountains and apparently was formed at the same time as the moutains.

3. The concentration of TFM conjugate may exceed that of free TFM in bile by a factor of 103.

Rhyolitic domes 11-17 m.y. old are widespread, particularly in the easternmost part of the state and in adjacent parts of Idaho and Nevada. Domes younger than 11 m.y. occur principally in two 250-km-long belts that trend N. 75° W. On the basis of 47 K/Ar radiometric dates, the rhyolitic domes in and between these belts show a remarkably well defined monotonic age progression from less than 1 m.y. old in the west to about 10 m.y. old on the east. The progression in age of the domes is sufficiently well defined that the ages of the domes can be smoothly contoured and the age of most undated domes can be estimated to within 1 m.y. The age contours are oblique to the trend of the two belts; domes younger than 4 m.y. occur only in and near the northern belt. The rate of progression is about 1 cm/yr for domes younger than about 5 m.y. and 3 cm/yr for domes 5-10 m.y. old. The change in rate of progression about 5 m.y. ago is accompanied by a change in orientation of the age contours and in area of outcrop. Inferred vents for dated rhyolitic ash-flow tuffs younger than 10 m.y. are located in areas where domes are approximately the same age as the tuffs and thus also fit the age progression.
Most electric-power-producing geothermal fields in the world occur in or proximal to areas of young silicic volcanic rocks. On the basis of the well-defined age progression of rhyolitic domes in southeastern Oregon, silicic intrusive bodies sufficiently young to be heat sources for geothermal systems are likely only in the vicinity of Newberry Volcano at the west end of the northern belt of domes.

Food consumption by the alfalfa-fed ducks was significantly gr 0.01) than the other two groups. All digestive organs of the alfalfa-fed ducks were significan (P < 0.01) than those of the corn- and turkey starter-fed ducks at the end of the study. It is that mallards can adapt rapidly to fibrous, relatively indigestible foods. This ability may hav value when higher quality foods are unavailable or when food habits change rapidly duritions.

The fault zone generally dips southwestward toward the adjacent San Andreas fault at low to steep angles, and the southwest block has moved upward and northeastward. Thrusting across the fault zone has produced large-scale offset, which may increase to the southeast. If strike-slip movement has occurred, it has probably been minor. Offset Quaternary strata, physiographic features, and recent seismic activity all indicate that the Sargent-Berrocal fault zone has been active in the last one million years and that some clastic strain is currently being released along the northwest and southeast parts of the fault zone.

The correspondence of the geochemical anomalies to the negative gravity anomaly suggests the presence of altered and mineralized rock and a Tertiary intrusive body at depth. This gravity anomaly and other similar gravity anomalies in the Front Range mineral belt merit further investigation for possible ore deposits.

Quartzite (Cambrian). Regional and local geologic relationships indicate that this intervening unit is definitely the Bolsa Quartzite. The Bolsa ranges in thickness from at least 200 ft at several localities in the Vekol Mountains to 0 ft over a positive area underlain by Precambrian diabase which has intruded the Apache Group. Previous observations that the diabase intruded the quartzite unit (thereby making this quartzite unit the Troy Quartzite) have been reinterpreted; all nonfaulted exposures of the basal contact of the quartzite unit show sedimentary relationships. No evidence was found to suggest that the Troy Quartzite was ever deposited in the Vekol Mountains.

1254, or 1260 at levels that added equal amounts of chlorine to the feed. The experiment comprised two consecutive 5-day periods; three sublethal concentrations of chlorine were evaluated during the first period and three lethal concentrations during the second period. Evaluations utilized comparisons of mortality, time to death, weight change, and food consumption. Sublethal concentrations produced no detectable effects. Lethal concentrations with equal Chlorine showed Aroclor 1248 to be less toxic at the highest chlorine concentrations, but at lower concentrations Aroclor 1254 was more toxic than Aroclor 1260. Although chlorine percentage of a PCB is positively correlated with its avian toxicity, PCB toxicity is apparently not simply a function of chlorination.

Many of the data used in the report were collected by the Geological Survey in cooperation with the Division of Water Rights, Utah Department of Natural Resources.

To the writers’ knowledge, these are the first such effects of ground-water withdrawal reported in Utah. The fracturing is in an area about 1 mile (1.6 km) wide and 11 miles (18 km) long near Milford, in an unsaturated clay-silt zone (locally peaty at top) in the upper part of the principal ground-water reservoir. The fractures range in length from several feet to more than 100 feet (30 m), and their maximum measured depth in 1972 was 4 feet (1.2 m). Land subsidence in the Milford area is demonstrated by three lines of evidence: (1) collapse structures, (2) well casings that protrude higher above the land surface than when first placed in the borehole, and (3) lower elevations at National Ocean Survey (formerly U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey) bench marks in 1970 than in 1908. This evidence shows that land subsidence in the Milford area is of two types, each having a different origin. One type has a near-surface origin in the clay-silt zone in the upper part of the principal groundwater reservoir, and the other is in the lower artesian aquifers of the principal ground-water reservoir. The amount of observed subsidence ranges from 0.05 foot (0.015 m) at the bench mark at Read to about 6 feet (1.8 m) at collapse structures in the Hay Springs area.

The principal objective of the study was a general definition of water-quality characteristics throughout the major drainage areas tributary to Utah Lake. A secondary objective was the definition of specific problem areas or stream reaches in which deterioration in water quality was evident.
This report is intended to aid public officials and water users in the lower Bear River drainage basin to develop, conserve, and administer their water resources. Although the report is primarily about ground water, it describes the relation of ground water to surface water and presents a general water-budget analysis. It discusses the sources, occurrence, availability, quantity, movement, chemical quality, and development of the ground water and the effects of climate, geology, and development on the ground water. The appendix of the report describes the well- and spring-numbering system and defines some units and terms.

The data were obtained from regulating agencies and from recent surveys made by the U.S. Geological Survey. The history of each lake and of its respective regulating agency is presented, along with methods used for data collection and analyses.
\nThe largest reservoir, Lake Berryessa, has a volume of 1,600,000 acre-ft (1,975 hm3), with a drainage. area of 576 mi2 (1,490 km2 ). Pilarcitos Lake is one of the smallest reservoirs, with a volume of 3,100 acre-ft (3. 8 hm3) and a drainage area of 3. 80 mi 2 (9.84km2). Eleven of the 21 reservoirs are open to the public for recreation. The most intensive shoreline development and use is at Lake Berryessa and Lake Merced. All but three of the 21 reservoirs (not including Upper Crystal Springs Reservoir) were thermally stratified during the summer. Eight of the reservoirs showed evidence of dissolvedoxygen depletion during the summer. Lafayette Reservoir and Loch Lomond are mechanically aerated in order to increase the dissolved-oxygen concentration and lower the surface water temperature. The lake waters ranged from the hard (320 mg/1 CaC03) of Calero Reservoir, to the soft (27 mg/1 CaC03) of Upper Crystal Springs Reservoir. Drainage from abandoned mercury mines in Santa Clara County has resulted in mercury concentrations in Calero and Lexington Reservoir fish which exceed U.S. Food and Drug limitations (0.5 μ/g) for acceptability of mercury in fish used for human food. In Loch Lomond, four major production periods of the blue-green algae, Anabaena sp. , occurred from May to October, 1967-69. Blue-green algae were the most numerous algae in Lake Del Valle from March through July 1971, with 5,400 blue-green algal organisms per millilitre collected in April.

When related to streamflow, these data provide hydrologists with a knowledge of the flood experience of a drainage basin. If an adequate flood history is known, it is possible to estimate the probable magnitude and frequency of floods likely to occur in that basin, and this information is a valuable asset to anyone who must estimate design floods at proposed drainage structures. However, most design problems involve estimating peak flows on ungaged streams. This is difficult because the rate of storm runoff is not the same in all basins due to the influence of various basin characteristics which can either assist or retard the runoff. The crest-stage gaging program in Oregon is designed to provide a representative sampliing of peak flows at basins having a wide range in characteristics. Then, after sufficient data are collected, a statistical analysis can be made which will provide a means for estimating design floods at ungaged sites on the basis of known basin characteristics.

hydrology, Columbia Basin Irrigation Project Area, Washington","docAbstract":"Since 1952 water diverted from the Columbia River at Grand Coulee Dam has been used to irrigate parts of the Columbia Basin Irrigation Project area in eastern Washington, and as a result ground-water levels generally have risen in the area. The rapid increases in ground-water inflow, outflow, and storage from irrigation have created a need for a better understanding of the ground-water system before and after the start of irrigation to establish guidelines necessary for management of the area's ground-water resource.
