The principal objectives of this program have been to use data recorded by this network to precisely locate earthquakes in the active seismic zones of southern Alaska, delineate seismically active faults, assess seismic risk, document potential premonitory earthquake phenomena, investigate current tectonic deformation, and study the structure and physical properties of the crust and upper mantle. A task fundamental to all of these goals is the routine cataloging of earthquake parameters for earthquakes located within and adjacent to the seismograph network.</p><p><br Potentiometric levels decreased 5 to 36 feet between September 1979 and May 1980, in the citrus and farming sections of southern Hillsborough, southwestern Polk, northwestern DeSoto , Hardee, and Manatee Counties. Water levels in these areas are widely affected by pumping for irrigation and have the greatest range in fluctuations. Water-level decreases ranged from 0 to 8 feet in coastal, northern, and southern areas of the Water Management District. Generally, potentiometric levels were lower than previous May levels except in the northernmost and southernmost counties where water levels were 1 to 5 feet higher. The Floridan aquifer is the principal source of potable water in the area. Water-level measurements were made on approximately 1200 wells and on several springs. The potentiometric surface is shown by 5-foot contour intervals except in the Fernandina Beach area where 20-foot intervals are used to show a deep cone of depression. This is the fourth map of a series covering the entire St. Johns River Water Management District and vicinity. Two maps cover the low water-level period in May and two show the high-water period in September. The potentiometric surface ranged from 125 feet above the National Vertical Datum of 1929 (NGVD) in Polk County to 120 feet below NGVD in Nassau County. Water levels in the principal artesian aquifer underwent a long-term decline during the period 1970-79. In some areas water levels dropped more than 10 feet. Wells tapping the Clayton Limestone in the Albany area showed a long-term decline during the period 1970-79, and in some wells water levels dropped more than 20 feet. Water levels in the Cretaceous aquifer system showed little fluctuation during 1979. In the Piedmont area mean water levels remained the same to 4 feet higher in 1979 than in 1978 and showed no long-term trend. The amount of ground water withdrawn in 1978 decreased more than 1.2 million acre-feet from the amount withdrawn in 1977 and is the smallest amount withdrawn since the mid-1950 's except in 1966. Nearly all the decrease was in the amount of ground water used for irrigation in the Basin and Range lowlands province. Possible causes for the decrease include above-average precipitation, greater availability of surface water, and some comparatively new conservation practices. The Salt River Valley and the lower Santa Cruz area are the largest agricultural areas in the State; the amount of ground water withdrawn for agricultural use in the Salt River Valley and the lower Santa Cruz area decreased nearly 613,000 and 291,000 acre-feet, respectively, between 1977 and 1978. The report contains two small-scale maps of Arizona that show (1) pumpage of ground water by areas and (2) the status of the ground-water inventory in the State. The main map, which is at a scale of 1:500,000, shows potential well production, depth to water in selected wells in spring 1979, and change in water level in selected wells from 1974 to 1979. The brief text that accompanies the maps summarizes the current ground-water conditions in the State. These submerged lands are under federal jurisdiction. The authority to lease tracts for resource development is vested with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), of the Department of Interior, pursuant to the terms of the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act of 1953 and the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969; the latter Act requires that the inevitable social and environmental effects of development be considered in leasing decisions.</p><p>The Georges Bank region, part of the Continental Shelf off New England, is one of three designated Atlantic OCS target areas for petroleum exploration. The coarse silt and sand parts of these loads are deposited on the Lake Agassiz Plain. Transport of sediment is lowered and flow duration is increased on the Middle Branch Park River due to the presence of small dams. Observations suggest that bedload transport is a significant process, particularly in the upstream reaches. However, no quantitative bedload data were collected.</p><p>During periods of low flow, analyses of water from the rivers in both watersheds show downstream increases in sodium and chloride due to ground-water seepage or the unregulated flow of wells. </p><p>Diversity of benthic invertebrates indicates water-quality conditions are better on the Middle Branch Park River than on the North Branch, and are better at upstream sites than at downstream sites. </p><p>A program through which the Soil Conservation Service can monitor the effects of present and future works of improvement on the watersheds was designed. The Hunter Drift drains an underground area of about 400 acres, the Anna S 1 main entry, an area of 330 acres, and Mitchel 2 discharge an area of about 120 acres. As of August 1, 1979, about 55 acres (15%) had been daylighted in the Hunter Drift basin, about 15 acres (5%) in the Anna S main entry basin and about 30 acres (25%) in the Mitchel basin. The acidity of the Mitchel 2 discharge changed the most, from 176 milligrams per liter (as CaCO3) in 1975-76 to 1,190 in 1978-79, an increase of 580%. The acidity of the Hunter Drift discharge increased from 348 milligrams per liter during 1975-76 to 710 milligrams per liter during 1978-79, an increase of 100%.
