Intrinsic copper content averages 155 ppm, and two types of concentrations of copper in the Nikolai are common: (1) native copper fillings of amygdules and rubble zones typically near flow tops, and (2) veins and thin replacement zones that contain native copper and copper-iron sulfides in quartz-epidote or calcite gangue in faults and fractures. Oxygen isotope data from quartz and epidote from three copperbearing veins yield calculated ore fluid temperatures of approximately 200°C and 6180 of approximately +1 per mil in agreement with a metamorphicsegregation origin of these deposits, as suggested by Sinclair (1977). </p><p>Seven K-Ar ages of chloritized greenstone, including those adjacent to veins fall on an initial argon diagram with a zero intercept and a slope which yields an isochron age of 112 + 11 m.y. The ages define a Cretaceous thermalmetamorphic episode which is responsible for alteration and mineralization. The episode is younger than a major Jurassic progeny, accompanied by granitic intrusion, in the area, and appears to be unaffected by minor granitic intrusion in the middle to late Tertiary. We believe the Cretaceous event is related to accretion of Wrangellia to its present relative position in North America. The conceptual framework for the analysis is suggested by the economic theory of production. The minimum flow of the river and the percentage of the total waste inflow receiving nitrification are considered to be two variable inputs to be used in the production of given minimum concentration of DO in the river. Each of the inputs has a cost: the loss of dependable peak hydroelectric generating capacity at Buford Dam associated with flow augmentation and the cost associated with nitrification of wastes. The least-cost combination of minimum flow and waste treatment necessary to achieve a prescribed minimum DO concentration is identified. Results of the study indicate that, in some instances, the waste-assimilation capacity of the Chattahoochee River can be substituted for increased waste treatment; the associated savings in waste-treatment costs more than offset the benefits foregone because of the loss of peak generating capacity at Buford Dam. The sensitivity of the results to the estimates of the cost of replacing peak generating capacity is examined. It is also demonstrated that a flexible approach to the management of DO in the Chattahoochee River may be much more cost effective than a more rigid, institutional approach wherein constraints are placed on the flow of the river and(or) on waste-treatment practices. The method was developed by multiple-regression techniques and applies to floods with recurrence intervals from 2 to 100 years.</p><p>The State is divided into three regions, and sets of equations for calculating peak discharges based on physical basin characteristics are provided for each region. In the northern region, flood-peak discharges are related to drainage area, forest cover, and 2-year 24-hour rainfall. In the southern region, flood peaks are related to drainage area alone. In the eastern region, peaks are related to drainage area, slope, storage, forest cover, and two composite soil categories. Standard errors of estimate for the regression equations in the northern region range from 38 to 49 percent. For the southern region, the standard errors of estimate vary from 52 to 86 percent, and for the eastern region they vary from 37 to 40 percent.</p><p>Maximum observed flood peaks, basin characteristics, and flood-frequency characteristics are tabulated for 234 gaged sites in Maryland and nearby in surrounding states. At 39 of these sites, a rainfall-runoff model was used to obtain synthetic flood-frequency data. Parts of the area have undergone rapid population growth in recent years due to an increase of winter sports activities. This rapid growth has resulted in a demand for additional domestic, recreational, and municipal water supplies. Maximum yields of 100 gallons per minute are available from wells completed in the alluvial aquifers while as much as 60 gallons per minute may be obtained from wells completed in the Dakota and Entrada Sandstones. Yields from other aquifers generally are less than 25 gallons per minute. Calcium magnesium bicarbonate water is the predominant water type in the study area. Dissolved solids concentrations ranged from 30 to 829 milligrams per liter and hardness ranged from 18 to 400 milligrams per liter.
