Monthly measurements were attempted at 44 sites in the basin during the 1971 and 1972 water years. Some measurements could not be made because some sites were not accessible at all times, some of the streams did not have flow at all times, or some of the streams could not be measured during high flow. For those sites at which measurements could not be made, monthly discharge was determined by an alternative method involving the use of daily hydrographs for nearby gaging-station sites.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr74214","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Utah Department of Natural Resources Division of Water Rights","usgsCitation":"Cruff, R., 1974, Estimating mean streamflow in the Duchesne River basin, Utah: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 74-214, Report: 32 p.; 4 Plates: 27.67 x 26.36 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr74214.","productDescription":"Report: 32 p.; 4 Plates: 27.67 x 26.36 inches or smaller","costCenters":[{"id":610,"text":"Utah Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":146907,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1974/0214/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":430627,"rank":6,"type":{"id":29,"text":"Figure"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1974/0214/figure-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":430626,"rank":5,"type":{"id":29,"text":"Figure"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1974/0214/figure-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":430625,"rank":4,"type":{"id":29,"text":"Figure"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1974/0214/figure-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":430624,"rank":3,"type":{"id":29,"text":"Figure"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1974/0214/figure-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":430619,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1974/0214/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"scale":"250000","country":"United States","state":"Utah","otherGeospatial":"Duchesne River basin","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -112.027587890625,\n              39.10875135935859\n            ],\n            [\n              -112.027587890625,\n              40.896905775860006\n            ],\n            [\n              -109.127197265625,\n              40.896905775860006\n            ],\n            [\n              -109.127197265625,\n              39.10875135935859\n            ],\n            [\n              -112.027587890625,\n              39.10875135935859\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0ce4b07f02db5fc8c8","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Cruff, R.W.","contributorId":77510,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Cruff","given":"R.W.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":167420,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

To determine what measures are required to provide a better quality mine-water discharge in the Wyoming Valley, mine hydrology and mine-water quality are related to mine-pool management. The addition of mine-pool outlets at several locations would increase the rate of discharge and reduce interpool flow, which would reduce the total mineral load discharged to the river. Additional outlets would act as relief overflows to reduce the maximum fluctuation of mine-pool levels, decrease related mine-surface instability, and eliminate surface flooding.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr74237","usgsCitation":"Hollowell, J.R., 1974, Hydrology of the abandoned coal mines in the Wyoming Valley, Pennsylvania: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 74-237, 47 [i.e. 50] leaves :ill. Predictive modeling, monitoring, and management of radionuclides dissolved and transported by ground water can best be done for sites in relatively simple hydrogeologic settings; namely, in unfaulted relatively flat-lying strata of intermediate permeability such as silt, siltstone and silty sandstone. In contrast, dense fractured or soluble media, and poorly permeable porous media (aquitards) are not suitable for use as burial sites, first because of media heterogeneity and difficulties of sampling, and consequently of predictive modeling, and second, because in humid zones burial trenches in aquitards may overflow. A buffer zone several thousands of feet to perhaps several miles around existing or proposed sites is a mandatory consequence of the site selection criteria. As a specific example, the Maxey Flats, Kentucky low-level waste disposal site is examined. The Chicot aquifer overlies the Evangeline aquifer, which is underlain by the Burkeville confining layer. Both aquifers consist of unconsolidated and discontinuous layers of sand and clay that dip toward the Gulf of Mexico. Heavy pumping of fresh water has caused large declines in the altitudes of the potentiometric surfaces in both aquifers and has created large cones of depression around Houston. The declines have caused compaction of clay layers, which has resulted in land surface subsidence and the movement of saline ground water toward the centers of the cones of depression. An electric analog model was used to study the hydrologic system and to simulate the declines in the altitudes of the potentiometric surfaces for several alternative plans of ground-water development. The results indicate that the largest part. of the pumped water comes from storage in the water-table part of the Chicot aquifer. Vertical leakage from the aquifers and water derived from the compaction of clay layers in the aquifers are also large sources of the water being pumped. The response of the system, as observed on the model, indicates that development of additional ground-water supplies from the water-table part of the Chicot aquifer north of Houston would result in a minimum decline of the altitudes of the potentiometric surfaces. Total withdrawals of about 1,000 million gallons (5.8 million cubic meters) per day may be possible without seriously, increasing subsidence or salt-water encroachment. Analyses of the recovery of water levels indicate that both land-surface subsidence and salt-water encroachment could be reduced by artificially recharging the artesian part of the aquifer.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr74113","usgsCitation":"Jorgensen, D.G., 1974, Analog-model studies of ground-water hydrology in the Houston S. Geological Survey made seismic noise measurements in the East Mesa area of Imperial Valley, California, to find out if a noise anomaly was associated with the Mesa thermal anomaly. Thirty-three locations were occupied in the area using slow-speed tape-recording seismic systems. One of the stations (CEN) was operated close to where a geothermal test well was subsequently drilled by the U. S. Bureau of Reclamation. Several sources of cultural noise are present in the area. Large fluctuations in noise level, superposed on a constant high level of noise, occur from traffic on a freeway to the south of the region. There is noise generated by canals to the west and south and agricultural activity to the west of the region. Noise at 2.5 Hz frequency generated by a small waterfall (power drop) on the All American Canal propagates as far as 10 km. Average noise levels were computed at each station using several quiet samples selected from 4-hour sections of data recorded at night and contoured. Spatial distribution of 2-3 Hz noise show noise radiating from the power drop. Noise in 0-2, 3-5, and 5-10 Hz bands show high levels extending along the freeway to the south and East High Line Canal to the west of the area. The Mesa thermal anomaly is centered about 2.5 km from the freeway and canal and does not seem to have any anomalous noise amplitudes associated with it. Additional results using data from two arrays of closely-spaced instruments extending from the freeway to the Mesa thermal anomaly also show no indications of high noise levels over the anomaly. This conclusion differs from the results of two previous surveys in the area (Douze and Sorrells, 1972; Geothermal Staff of Teledyne-Geotech, 1972) which show well defined noise anomalies in the 0-2, and 3-5 Hz frequency bands. A search was also made for anomalous features in noise spectra and for coherent wave trains indicating the presence of discrete sources of noise. The only predominant feature in the spectra is the 2.5 Hz peak seen at most stations, from noise generated by the power drop. Records from several three-element, L-shaped arrays with 0.3 km instrument spacing show very little visual coherence. Measurements using a cross-spectral method, however, show that highly coherent waves are found at 0.4 and 2.5 Hz; coherence is less, though significant, at 3.4 and 4.4 Hz; direction studies using phase delays from the arrays give many non-unique solutions, as the array spacing is larger than the wavelengths involved. Using the knowledge that 2.5 Hz waves are generated by the power drop, the velocity of seismic noise waves in the East Mesa area is estimated to be 0.5 km/sec.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr7496","usgsCitation":"Iyer, H.M., 1974, Search for geothermal seismic noise in the East Mesa area, Imperial Valley, California: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 74-96, 52 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr7496.","productDescription":"52 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":146467,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1974/0096/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":429673,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1974/0096/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"East Mesa area, Imperial Valley","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -115.83977020389776,\n              33.06510438800386\n            ],\n            [\n              -115.83977020389776,\n              32.72142318642486\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.51595622644872,\n              32.72142318642486\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.51595622644872,\n              33.06510438800386\n            ],\n            [\n              -115.83977020389776,\n              33.06510438800386\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e2e4b07f02db5e4e45","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Iyer, Hariharaiyer Mahadeva","contributorId":14822,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Iyer","given":"Hariharaiyer","email":"","middleInitial":"Mahadeva","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":169181,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

A detailed description of Geological Survey classifications is given on pages 40 and 41. In a following section each classification is identified, subsequent actions are summarized, and conclusions are given pertaining to the disposition of the lands involved.

The report advocates the revocation of Geological Survey classifications affecting 13,985 acres and the retention of 1,883 acres in existing classifications. No new classifications are recommended at this time. The proposed revocations will in no way affect the withdrawals resulting from filings for preliminary permits or licenses under the Federal Power Act.

The review of Geological Survey classifications necessarily involves a companion study of waterpower withdrawals in connection with Federal Power Commission projects which are under the jurisdiction of the Federal Power Commission. A detailed description of these actions is given on pages 75 and 76 followed by a general description of all Federal Power Commission projects in the study area. The affected lands are identified and recommendations are made pertaining to the disposition of the lands. In the Pit River basin there are about 8,553 acres in Federal Power Commission project withdrawal of which 1,963 acres have negligible power value.

The appraisal of land classifications and withdrawals is based upon the current status of planning for future water resources development and an investigation of existing constructed projects, water supply, water rights, land topography, and other land uses. Conclusions concerning Geological Survey classifications are based on a tract-by-tract evaluation as some actions cover widely scattered potentialities; however, recommendations relating to Federal Power Commission project withdrawals are based on an evaluation of the purpose of each filing.

This report has been reviewed by the following agencies: The Resources Agency of California; Sacramento, CA., Soil Conservation Service, North Cal-Neva RC&D Project; Cedarville, CA., Soil Conservation Service, Red Bluff, CA., Bureau of Reclamation, Sacramento, CA., and U.S. Forest Service, San Francisco, CA. The odd-numbered zones and the Mahogany zone are mappable subsurface units of relatively thick oil shale and are distinguished from the even-numbered zones and A- and B-grooves which are thinner units of oil shale of lower grade. \r\n\r\nLarge amounts of nahcolite found in zones 5 to 12 occur in (1) coarse-grained crystalline aggregates scattered through oil shale, (2) laterally continuous units of fine-grained crystals disseminated in oil shale, (3) brown microcrystalline beds, and (4) white coarse-grained beds that grade laterally into halitic rocks toward basin center. The original .upper limit of the nahcolite and halitic rocks is not yet completely known, but the present top is marked by a dissolution surface. Above this surface the rocks, extending from zones 11 or 12 upward into the Mahogany zone, form a water-saturated 'leached zone,' a geohydrologic unit in which large amounts of water-soluble minerals probably mostly nahcolite, and halite, were removed by ground-water dissolution. Rocks in the leached zone, mostly oil shale, are commonly broken and fractured and contain crystal cavities and solution breccias. Several solution breccias can be traced laterally into unleached beds of nahcolite and halite. Although evidence of salines is found in rocks above A-groove, the original saline facies that includes most of the bedded deposits extends from zone 5 upward into A-groove. \r\n\r\nPotentially ruinable beds of white nahcolite as much as 12 feet thick are found at depths of 1,560 or more feet below the surface. Some thicker beds of high-grade nahcolite are believed to be too close to the dissolution surface for safe room-and-pillar mining. Probably the most economical method of mining nahcolite would be as a coproduct of a shale-oil industry. Removal of nahcolite prior to retorting increases significantly the grade of oil shale by as much as 1.6 times, Several zones are more than 300 feet thick and average 30 or more weight percent nahcolite. Resources of nahcolite per square mile range as high as 489 million short tons. The total nahcolite resource in the basin is conservatively estimated at 32 billion short tons, which makes it the secondlargest deposit of sodium carbonate known .in the world.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey],","doi":"10.3133/ofr7456","usgsCitation":"Dyni, J.R., 1974, Stratigraphy and nahcolite resources of the saline facies of the Green River Formation, Rio Blanco County, Colorado: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 74-56, ii, 28 leaves, 2 sheets, :ill ;29 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr7456.","productDescription":"ii, 28 leaves, 2 sheets, :ill ;29 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":146399,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1974/0056/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":41886,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1974/0056/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b1be4b07f02db6a9179","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Dyni, John R. jdyni@usgs.gov","contributorId":756,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Dyni","given":"John","email":"jdyni@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":167815,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
