National energy needs have precipitated an increased interest in the development of a large coal-based electric power industry in the western United States. This anticipated development has, in turn, spawned a great deal of interest in the environmental impact consequent upon the mining and utilization of these coal supplies. Numerous studies directed to assessing this impact are underway or are in the planning stages by agencies of government at all levels as well as by educational institutions and private firms. It is expected that such studies will continue to increase in number in the foreseeable future. Some idea of the diversity of this work is given by Boulding (1974), who surveyed a broad spectrum of people and organizations concerned about the environmental impact of coal development in the Northern Great Plains. This survey included over 50 governmental organizations and over 50 nongovernmental organizations.

The Dismal Swamp, on the border between eastern Virginia and North Carolina is one of the few remaining large (approximately 210,000 acres) areas of wet wilderness in the eastern United States. There has been much speculation concerning the hydrologic conditions that led to the formation of the swamp.

Oaks and Coch (1973) recently completed a detailed investigation of the geology and morphology of the area. An analysis of their geology and the pollen work of Whitehead (1972) has lead the authors to the following hypothesis concerning the hydrologic conditions that led to the formation of the peat in the swamp.

A permeable sand facies of the Norfolk Formation underlies Dismal Swamp. This facies was originally completely covered by the Sand Bridge Formation, which is a confining layer, and underlain by the impermeable Yorktown Formation. Movement of water eastward within the Norfolk Formation from the outcrop area on the top of the Suffolk Scarp was further restricted by a less permeable facies of the Norfolk east of the swamp; thereby creating an artesian head within the permeable sand facies of the Norfolk Formation.

Erosion during the Pleistocene age breached the Sand Bridge confining layer and allowed upward seepage of water along the shallow stream valleys. This seepage, combined with the abundant rainfall and naturally sluggish surface drainage, may have been sufficient to trigger the formation of peat along stream valleys about 9,000 years ago. The peat further inhibited surface drainage, which in turn, accelerated the accumulation of peat until the interfluve areas were covered. The present role of the Norfolk Formation in the hydrology of the swamp is not clear, but it is considered to be one of the most important aspects of the hydrology to be studied in future investigations.

Surface inflow is from small streams draining from the west. The flow of these streams varies widely, being generally less in the summer than in winter. Outflow is primarily through the Feeder Ditch-Dismal Swamp Canal system, which discharges at South Mills and Deep Creek locks.

Rates and direction of surface flow within the swamp are partly controlled by gates on many of the ditches. Inadequately controlled ditches penetrating the Norfolk Formation plus withdrawal of water from wells along Suffolk Scarp have altered the flow of ground water under the swamp. These modifications and the loss of water through the Dismal Swamp Canal have probably resulted in a generally drier swamp as indicated by changes in the vegetation. It is feasible to preserve Dismal Swamp, but more detailed studies of the hydrology are needed to aid in future management.

The Office of the Solicitor, Department of the Interior, requested the Geological Survey to evaluate the reliability of streamflow records in the Truckee River basin and to determine the long-term average annual runoff.

The reliability of streamflow records was evaluated by comparisons between pairs of records at six locations along the Truckee River between Lake Tahoe and Pyramid Lake.

The observed or estimated annual runoff near Nixon, Nevada was adjusted for changes in storage, evaporation losses, diversions, and depletions to approximate the inflow into Pyramid Lake under natural conditions.

The long-term average annual runoff near Nixon was computed on the basis of streamflow records since 1899. The long-term (124-year) record of precipitation at Sacramento and tree ring information were used to substantiate the conclusion that the average runoff during the 74 years of streamflow record is a reliable measure of the average runoff for a longer period.

This review of selected segments of the stream-gaging network of Brazil was undertaken by the writer in March and April, 1973, pursuant to an agreement between Companhia de Pesquisa de Recursos Minerais (CPRM) and Centrais Eletricas Brasileiras S.A. (ELETROBRAS) as a part of the cooperative program of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and CPRM under the auspices of the Ministerio das Minas e Energia (MME) and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). Its primary purpose is to provide an evaluation of the adequacy of streamflow data on streams which are being considered for or are already being utilized for hydroelectric power sources. Some comments are included pertaining to the general coverage hydrologic network. These comments were generated by the examination of the streamflow data useful for power purposes because all gaging stations form a part of the total network for hydrologic investigations. Present plans are that the entire network will eventually be operated by or under the jurisdiction of the MME through the Departamento National de Aguas e Energia Eletrica (DNAEE).

Brazil is a large country, larger than the conterminous United States, and it has been engaged in hydrologic investigations for more than 50 years. The network has been maintained by Federal agencies, State agencies, power companies, and consulting firms and until recently no organizational mechanism existed to coordinate the various activities or to establish uniform standards of data collection, computation, and publication.

It is estimated that stage and/or discharge data have been collected at 2,500 or more sites in Brazil. Because there has been no centralized publication system, it has not been possible to locate with assurance all measurement sites or to ascertain precisely the types and quality of the data collected or available.

For these reasons the suggestions outlined in this report are expected to be modified on the basis of local need and site information, which may not have been evident at the time of the review. For example, specific suggestions have been made to discontinue some stations which appear superfluous or which essentially duplicate other stations. In other instances additions to the network have been proposed. There may be reasons for the continued operation of a given station which cannot be discerned from the available literature. Also coverage may have been established in an area but the evidence has not yet appeared in print. DEAEE is currently (1973) working diligently to overcome a backlog of data computation and publication. Brazil is currently developing at a rapid rate with electric power demands increasing at a 12% annually, a reflection of the tremendous growth of the economy. With this rate of increase likely to continue for the foreseable future, it goes without saying that hydrologic information needed tomorrow must be collected today.

The Arkansas State Highway Department is constructing Interstate Highway 430 (1-430) across Fourche Creek in southwest Little Rock. The Highway Department requested the U.S. Geological Survey to determine the elevation, the discharge, and the frequency of the flood of April 21, 1974, and the elevation, the discharge, and the backwater for the 50-year flood, and to report on the hydrologic effects of alterations to the proposed bridges and roadway to accommodate the larger of the two floods.

All elevations in this report are given to highway datum, which is mean sea level.

This report was prepared under the provisions of the cooperative agreement between the Arkansas State Highway Commission and the Geological Survey.

The U. S. Geological Survey (USGS) first began work in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 1950 under the sponsorship of the Ministry of Finance and National Economy. The basic objective of the work was to investigate the mineral and water resource potential in western Saudi Arabia, but little was known of the region and it therefore was necessary to prepare geographic and geologic maps. Aerial photographs were taken and controlled mosaics produced, some paid for by the USGS but most paid for by the Saudi Arabian government, and reconnaissance geologic mapping was undertaken until the USGS team left Saudi Arabia in 1955. This mapping, in cooperation with mapping of the Arabian American Oil Company, was compiled as a series of scale 1:500,000 geographic and geologic maps in Arabic and English covering all of Saudi Arabia. A total of 42 of these maps were prepared. Three scale 1:2,000,000 geographic and geologic maps in Arabic and English, covering the Arabian Peninsula, also were prepared from this work. All of the maps were printed in the United States and published by the USGS, the last in 1963.

Other work done by the USGS between 1950 and 1955 included locating and examining ancient mines, indentifying the Wadi Fatima oolitic iron deposit and other iron deposits in northwest Saudi Arabia, and advising on many water supply problems including those for Riyadh, Qizan, Qunfudhah, Rabigh, Yenbo, Umm Lejh, and Al Wajh. The mapping work and the geologic investigations laid the groundwork for the more detailed studies that followed.

A 1,930-foot (588-metre) water-supply well was constructed at the Painted Canyon Overlook, Theodore Roosevelt National Memorial Park (South Unit), southwestern North Dakota. Aquifers underlying the site are in rocks of Late Cretaceous and Tertiary age. These rocks have an aggreqate thickness of about 2,000 feet (610 metres). The well screen is set in the Fox Hills Sandstone of Late Cretaceous age. The formation consists of about 200 feet (61 metres) of interbedded marine sandstone, siltstone, and claystone. The sandstone is very fine to fine grained.

The well was pumped for 24 hours w·ith a submersible pump at rates from 72 to 77 gallons per minu t e (4.5 to 4.9 litres per second) and had a specific capacity of about 0.4 gallon per minute per foot (0.08 litre per second per metre). The water was a sodium bicarbonate type and contained 1,050 milligrams per litre dissolved solids.

The production characteristics of hot-water geothermal wells which flash to steam-water mixtures in the cased part of the hole were-analyzed. The flashing flow is assumed to be isenthalpic and, for purposes of calculating pressure drop, a finely dispersed mixture of equal average velocity. Water flow in the aquifer is treated using steady, radial Darcy flow. Calculations for a typical geothermal well show the effects on production of varying the system parameters of aquifer permeability, depth to water table, and base temperature. Field data from Wairakei, New Zealand, demonstrate the reductions in flow caused by mineral deposits in the bore. Data from Imperial Valley, Calif., agree well with calculated results.
