These dates, combined with fossil identifications and measured stratigraphic sections, provide significant insights into the history of glaciation, climatic change, and related events of late Quaternary time in the north-central Brooks Range.

Two dates from Tulunga Valley show that peat-forming intervals during the middle Wisconsin and during an earlier period were terminated by episodes of loess accretion that probably correspond to glaciations in the Brooks Range.

The Anayaknaurak Bluff exposure in Anaktuvuk Valley contains a weathered till of the Banded Mountain (Itkillik I) glaciation overlain by unweathered outwash gravel of Antler Valley (Itkillik II) age. Radiocarbon dates from finer alluvium above the outwash indicate that a subsequent glacial readvance north of the range front occurred shortly after 13,000 yr B.P. This event was synchronous with a major glacial readvance that culminated between about 12,900 and 12,700 yr B.P. farther east in the Atigun and Sagavanirktok Valleys.

Additional dates from Anaktuvuk Valley show that glacier ice had retreated from the Antler Valley end-moraine complex by 10,600 yr B.P. The elongate basin that formed behind the moraine dam was being filled by alluvium at this time, and filling continued as late as 6200 yr B.P. near the range front. A possible climatic reversal during this interval is suggested by dates from Anaktuvuk Valley and from Toolik Valley farther east, which show peat formation between about 9500 and 8200 yr B.P. followed by solifluction and fan-building.

Soil test pits and other excavations near Anaktuvuk Pass show that the pass was deglaciated some time prior to 7250 yr B.P., and was suitable for human habitation by at least 6500 yr B.P. Dated buried peat suggests a change to more severe frost climate sometime after about 4750 yr B.P.

Other dates from the Chandler Lake quadrangle bear mainly on formation of low (generally 2.5 to 6 m) river terraces during intervals of renewed glaciation at valley heads during the late Holocene. Neoglaciation in the north-central Brooks Range evidently began about 3500 yr B.P., or at least was perceptible by this time as increased loess influx to sites north of the range front. Stream alluviation was in progress 2800-2700 yr B.P. at sites near Anaktuvuk Pass, and continued until sometime after 2000 yr B.P. Final phases of alluviation began about 1200 and 450 yr B.P. Independent dating of cirque-glacier advances by lichenometry supports the alluvial chronology and suggests that alluviation was controlled largely by increased sediment yield to streams during times of cirque-glacier expansion and increased rock-glacier activity.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr80790","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Hamilton, T.D., 1980, Quaternary stratigraphic sections with radiocarbon dates, Chandler Lake Quadrangle, Alaska: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 80-790, ii, 28 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr80790.","productDescription":"ii, 28 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":422864,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0790/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":155939,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0790/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Chandler Lake Quadrangle","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -153,\n              68\n            ],\n            [\n              -150,\n              68\n            ],\n            [\n              -150,\n              69\n            ],\n            [\n              -153,\n              69\n            ],\n            [\n              -153,\n              68\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a81e4b07f02db64a14c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hamilton, Thomas D.","contributorId":91474,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hamilton","given":"Thomas","email":"","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":189792,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The total estimated water use in the State in 1980 from groundwater and surface water was 3532 million gallons/day (mgd), including 662 mgd of saline water. Freshwater used from all sources in Mississippi during the period 1975 through 1980 increased from 2510 mgd to > 2870 mgd, a 14% increase. Although modest increases of freshwater use may be expected in public, self-supplied industrial, and thermoelectric supplies, large future increases in the use of freshwater may be expected primarily as a result of growth in irrigation and aquaculture. Management and protection of the quantity and quality of the available freshwater supply are often problems associated with increased use. Water use data, both temporal and spatial, are needed by the State of Mississippi to provide for intelligent, long-term management of the resources; one table gives data on the principal categories of water use, sources, and use by county. Most of the fine lithic ash that mantles the slopes of the volcano and the adjacent mountains fell from ash clouds that accompanied the pyroclastic flows. Widely scattered pumice lapilli that are present at the ground surface on the south, east, and north sides of Mount Hood may have been erupted during the mid-1800's, when the last known activity of the volcano occurred. \r\n\r\nThe geologically recent history of Mount Hood suggests that the most likely eruptive event in the future will be the formation of another dome, probably within the present south-facing crater. The principal hazards that could accompany dome formation include pyroclastic flows and mudflows moving from the upper slopes of the volcano down the floors of valleys. Ash clouds which accompany pyroclastic flows may deposit as much as a meter of fine ash close to their source, and as much as 20 centimeters at a distance of 11 kilometers downwind from the pyroclastic flows. Other hazards that could result from such eruptions include laterally directed explosive blasts that could propel rock fragments outward from the sides of a dome at high speed, and toxic volcanic gases. The scarcity of pumiceous ash erupted during the last 15,000 years suggests that explosive pumice eruptions are not a major hazard at Mount Hood; thus, there seems to be little danger that such an eruption will significantly affect the Portland (Oregon) metropolitan area in the near future.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Govt. The references listed are selected in the sense that mainly statistical reports such as the annual Minerals Yearbook of the U.S. Bureau of Mines and many annual and biennial reports of the Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys and its predecessor agencies are not included. Also not included are data on claims about which little more than their locations is known (for example, localities 40 and 41 in Reed and others, 1978 (MF-870-D)). These omissions should not be interpreted as a judgement that the claims are not on valid mineral occurrences, but only that there are insufficient data to describe any mineral deposit that might be present. The first rig began drilling in March\n1978. More rigs quickly moved into the Region, and as many as nine were\nworking at the same time for a brief period in January 1979. As of November\n1979, nineteen exploratory wells and two stratigraphic test wells had been\ndrilled by the oil companies. One of these test wells and three exploratory wells\nhave had shows of natural gas, but none of the oil companies has yet announced\nthat it has found enough gas to go forward with plans for production. Because of\nthe somewhat disappointing results so far, exploratory drilling has declined.\nOnly one company is currently operating a rig, and one other company has\nannounced plans to begin drilling this winter.
\n
\n
The most recent risked estimates by the U.S. Geological Survey of\nundiscovered, economically recoverable oil and gas resources in the Mid-Atlantic\ntracts currently under lease are 8 million barrels of oil and 860 billion cubic feet\nof natural gas. The resource estimate for oil does not represent a commercially\nproducible quantity. On the basis of the geologic information gained from wells\ncompleted to date and the huge capital costs of building a pipeline to bring the\ngas ashore, the natural gas estimate for currently leased tracts in the Mid-Atlantic\nRegion appears to be short of a commercially producible amount.
\n
\n
To date, onshore impacts resulting from OCS exploration consist of two\nsupport bases: a helicopter base in Atlantic City, New Jersey, from which crews\nare flown out to the drilling rigs; and a support base in Davisville, Rhode Island,\nfrom which equipment and supplies are ferried out to the rigs by boat. It is\nexpected that exploratory activity will remain close to present levels for at least\nthe next six months; consequently, support activity at Davisville and Atlantic\nCity for Mid-Atlantic OCS operations during the same period is expected to\ncorrespond to current levels.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr8017_1980","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Council on Environmental Quality","usgsCitation":"Macpherson, G.S., and Bookman, C.A., 1980, Outer Continental Shelf oil and gas activities in the Mid-Atlantic and their onshore impacts: a summary report, November 1979: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 80-17, viii, 63 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr8017_1980.","productDescription":"viii, 63 p.","numberOfPages":"76","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":281981,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/ofr8017_1980.jpg"},{"id":284492,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0017/report.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"New Jersey;Rhode Island","city":"Atlantic City;Davisville","otherGeospatial":"Outer Continental Shelf","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -76.99,34.91 ], [ -76.99,42.09 ], [ -69.74,42.09 ], [ -69.74,34.91 ], [ -76.99,34.91 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"53cd6a43e4b0b2908510324c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Macpherson, George S.","contributorId":75538,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Macpherson","given":"George","email":"","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":160880,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Bookman, Charles A.","contributorId":48182,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bookman","given":"Charles","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":160879,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Included are estimates of low-flow frequency at 10 gaging stations, flow duration at 8 gaging stations, and low-flow frequency characteristics at 13 low-flow partial-record stations and 81 miscellaneous sites. Equations are provided to estimate low-flow characteristics at ungaged sites and at sites where one base-flow discharge measurement is available. The equations were determined from multiple-regression analyses that related low-flow characteristics at gaging stations and low-flow partial-record stations to basin characteristics. The standard error of estimate is provided for each method of estimating the annual minimum 7-day mean flow below which the flow will fall on the average of once in 2 years and once in 10 years. The standard error of estimate for the 7-day 10-year low flow ranged from 9% to 113% depending on the type of data available. Standard error provides the user with the expected degree of accuracy for each method. In Upper Klamath Lake, average accumulation rates range from 0.9 mm/yr at a site in Howard Bay to 12.5 mm/yr at a location near the input from Agency Lake. Divers collected cores, approximately 50 cm long, from eight locations in Upper Klamath Lake and from one location in Lake Euwana; coring sites were chosen to represent a variety of sedimentary environments. Plots of excess 210Pb activity versus depth show that a sediment-mixing layer, ranging from 5 to 20 cm in thickness, is below the sediment-water interface at all coring locations; the mixing is due to biological activity, wave and current action, and gas generation. Two cores show changes in accumulation rates during the past 100-150 years that are probably related to changes in land use. X-radiographs indicate the presence of pumice layers and allow assessment of biological activity; these two kinds of information are important to the interpretation of 210Pb activity data. Trace-metal contents were determined to establish baseline information. The eight cores from Upper Klamath Lake contain much lower concentrations of all metals measured (Cd, Cu, Cr, Fe, Pb, Mn, and Zn) than are found in other lacustrine environments. The core taken from Lake Euwana contained higher concentrations of metals than the cores collected from Upper Klamath Lake.

This study was initiated in response to a concern that possible rapid accumulation of sediments in Upper Klamath Lake poses a threat to the lake's ability to support economically critical activities. Climate, therefore, is significantly controlled by complex interaction of energy flows near and at the terrestrial surface. When man alters this delicate energy balance by his use of the land, he may alter his climatic environment as well. Land use climatology has emerged as a discipline in which these energy interactions are studied; first, by viewing the spatial distributions of their surface manifestations, and second, by analyzing the energy exchange processes involved. Two new tools for accomplishing this study are presented: one that can interpret surface energy exchange processes from space, and another that can simulate the complex of energy transfers by a numerical simulation model. Use of a satellite-borne multispectral scanner as an imaging radiometer was made feasible by devising a gray-window model that corrects measurements made in space for the effects of the atmosphere in the optical path. The simulation model is a combination of mathematical models of energy transfer processes at or near the surface. Integration of these two analytical approaches was applied to the Washington-Baltimore area to coincide with the August 5, 1973, Skylab 3 overpass which provided data for constructing maps of the energy characteristics of the Earth's surface. The use of the two techniques provides insights into the relationship of climate to land use and land cover and in predicting alterations of climate that may result from alterations of the land surface.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/pp1099A","usgsCitation":"Pease, R., Jenner, C., and Lewis, J., 1980, The influences of land use and land cover on climate; an analysis of the Washington-Baltimore area that couples remote sensing with numerical simulation: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 1099, p. Knowledge of these surface characteristics, therefore, is essential to urban climate analysis. Aerodynamic or surface roughness of urban areas is not well documented, however, because of practical constraints in measuring the wind profile in the presence of large buildings. Using an empirical method designed by Lettau, and an analysis of variance of surface roughness values calculated for 324 samples averaging 0.8 hectare (ha) of land use and land cover sample in Baltimore, Md., a strong statistical relation was found between aerodynamic roughness and urban land use and land cover types. Assessment of three land use and land cover systems indicates that some of these types have significantly different surface roughness characteristics. The tests further indicate that statistically significant differences exist in estimated surface roughness values when categories (classes) from different land use and land cover classification systems are used as surrogates. A Level III extension of the U.S. Geological Survey Level II land use and land cover classification system provided the most reliable results. An evaluation of the physical association between the aerodynamic properties of land use and land cover and the surface climate by numerical simulation of the surface energy balance indicates that changes in surface roughness within the range of values typical of the Level III categories induce important changes in the surface climate.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/pp1099C","usgsCitation":"Nicholas, F., and Lewis, J., 1980, Relationships between aerodynamic roughness and land use and land cover in Baltimore, Maryland: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 1099, p.
