A summary of the historical data from 24 sites throughout Florida indicate that the principal ionic composition of atmospheric precipitation samples is calcium-sodium and bicarbonate-chloride with an average specific conductance of 32 micromhos per centimeter at 25 C. Historically, much of the sampling focused on primary nutrients and selected trace elements. Historical data indicate that nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations averaged 1.1 and 0.1 milligrams per liter, respectively. The limited trace metal data indicate that motor-vehicle activity may have a significant impact on local precipitation quality. Lead, for example, was measured in concentrations of as much as 2,400 micrograms per liter in samples collected in a highly populated, commerical area in south Florida. Statistical testing indicated that most major inorganic constituents, primary nutrients, and trace metals were significantly differnet among the sampling sites. The pH data indicated a range of about 5.0 to 7.0, but only limited pH data were collected and analyzed at the historical sites in such a timely manner as to represent pH conditions of the atmospheric precipitation during active rainfall. A critical review of the historical data suggested that while they may reflect local atmospheric quality conditions they likely do not define baseline conditions from a regional perspective. The application of these data were generally limited regarding regional extrapolation due to lack of standardization of sampling techniques, variable methods of sample preservation, nonuniform sampling intervals, variable sample sizes, and different periods of record. Rainfall amounts of 4 to 15.5 inches were observed. The maximum amount of 15.5 inches occurred at Jolo, WV , in about 30 hours. This was more than twice the amount which would be expected for a 100-year recurrence-interval storm. Flood discharges along the upper Guyandotte River; Tug Fork and Levisa Fork in the Big Sandy River basin; Cumberland River; and Clinch River and Dowell River in the Tennessee River basin exceeded those previously known. Severe flooding also occurred along the Holston River and along the North Fork Kentucky River. Recurrence intervals of observed flood discharges were greater than 100-years at 29 streamflow measurement sites. Substantial reductions in peak stages and discharges on Levisa Fork, North Pound River, and Guyandotte River, attained as a result of reservoir storage, were reported by U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Maximum daily suspended-sediment discharges on Guyandotte River near Baileysville, WV, and Tug Fork at Glenhayes, WV, were 54,800 tons/day and 290,000 tons/day, respectively, April 5, 1977. In general, the older pictures show an absence of riparian plants along the banks of the river. The newer photographs of each pair were taken in 1972 through 1976 and reveal an increased density of many plant species. Exotic species, such as saltcedar and camel-thorn, and native riparian plants such as sandbar willow, arrowweed, desert broom and cattail, now form a new riparian community along much of the channel of the Colorado River between Glen Canyon Dam and Lake Mead. The matched photographs also reveal that changes have occurred in the amount of sand and silt deposited along the banks. Detailed maps are presented showing distribution of 25 plant species along the reach of the Colorado River studied. The storm tide went completely across the land between the beach and Mobile Bay throughout much of the area. Most homes on the beach side of Alabama State Highway 180 were completely destroyed, and the highway was washed out in several places. The freshwater exists in two separate lenses, one in the northern half of the island and one in the southern half. The slightly larger north lens is separated from the south lens by a low-lying area 1 to 3 feet above NGVD of 1929. The lenses float on saltwater in the aquifer and are affected by tidal fluctuations. The areal and depth configuration of the lenses fluctuate in response to rainfall, evapotranspiration, lateral and vertical losses, and pumpage from local wells. In order to ascertain the viability of a proposed waste isolation site, it is necessary to study its geology without extensive drilling that might destroy its structural integrity. Hole-to-surface and hole-to-hole geophysical measurements can be useful in supplementing geologic data obtained from a few drill holes and can be used to aid the interpretation of surface geophysical measurements. The study presented in this paper was conducted at Salt Valley, Utah to test the feasibility of using hole-to-surface direct-current resistivity measurements to detect geologic inhomogeneities in evaporites. These measurements show the following:
(1) It is feasible to make hole-to-surface resistivity measurements over evaporites. However, near-surface steel casing can make it difficult to quantitatively analyze the field data with present interpretation techniques. Future investigations should include theoretical studies to solve interpretation problems when steel casing is in the hole and the mud is a high-conductivity brine.
(2) A comparison of measurements made from the three different source drill holes shows that the halite acts as an electrical insulator and most of the current emitted from the source is contained in the caprock.
(3) A comparison of measurements made parallel and perpendicular to the valley walls shows that there are more variations in the halitecaprock interface perpendicular than parallel to the axis of the Salt Valley anticline.
(4) Structurally complex interbeds within the salt may cause differences in the current distribution measured at the surface from current sources buried at different depths.
(5) Total field mapping would be more useful than the single-component data that were collected in this study.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr80981","usgsCitation":"Daniels, J.J., and Scott, J.H., 1980, Hole-to-surface resistivity measurements at Salt Valley, Utah: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 80-981, 35 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr80981.","productDescription":"35 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":403965,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0981/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":142157,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0981/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Utah","otherGeospatial":"Salt Valley","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -109.80903625488281,\n              38.852542390364235\n            ],\n            [\n              -109.65385437011719,\n              38.852542390364235\n            ],\n            [\n              -109.65385437011719,\n              38.93858247125804\n            ],\n            [\n              -109.80903625488281,\n              38.93858247125804\n            ],\n            [\n              -109.80903625488281,\n              38.852542390364235\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a54e4b07f02db62bfab","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Daniels, Jeffrey J.","contributorId":87938,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Daniels","given":"Jeffrey","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":157841,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Scott, James H.","contributorId":73579,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Scott","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":157840,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Intrinsic copper content averages 155 ppm, and two types of concentrations of copper in the Nikolai are common: (1) native copper fillings of amygdules and rubble zones typically near flow tops, and (2) veins and thin replacement zones that contain native copper and copper-iron sulfides in quartz-epidote or calcite gangue in faults and fractures. Oxygen isotope data from quartz and epidote from three copperbearing veins yield calculated ore fluid temperatures of approximately 200°C and 6180 of approximately +1 per mil in agreement with a metamorphicsegregation origin of these deposits, as suggested by Sinclair (1977).

Seven K-Ar ages of chloritized greenstone, including those adjacent to veins fall on an initial argon diagram with a zero intercept and a slope which yields an isochron age of 112 + 11 m.y. The ages define a Cretaceous thermalmetamorphic episode which is responsible for alteration and mineralization. The episode is younger than a major Jurassic progeny, accompanied by granitic intrusion, in the area, and appears to be unaffected by minor granitic intrusion in the middle to late Tertiary. We believe the Cretaceous event is related to accretion of Wrangellia to its present relative position in North America.
