This report provides descriptive statistics for 29 chemical or biological constituents for 109 stream sites in Nebraska sampled by the U.S. Geological Survey beginning in 1946. Also provided for each site are regression equations relating specific conductance to each of 12 chemical constituents and a regression equation relating specific conductance to stream discharge.

The descriptive statistics are presented by river basins. Water leaving these basins that has the lowest mean specific conductance (266 umho/cm) is from the Niobrara River at Verdel, and water that has the highest (1,890 umho/cm) is from the South Platte River at Roscoe. Statewide, the principal cations in streamflow are calcium and sodium, and the principal anions are bicarbonate and sulfate. Calcium and bicarbonate usually predominate where mean specific conductance is less than 1,000 umho/cm, and sodium and sulfate predominate where the mean exceeds 1,000 umho/cm.

Based on regression equations, dissolved solids, hardness, calcium, magnesium and bicarbonate, with some exceptions, correlate well with specific conductance for all stream sites.

Illustrations of how regression equations may be used to estimate water quality of streamflow are given and are compared with values from actual analyses.

The combined thermal effects of flow regulation and powerplants effluents resulted in mean daily river temperature downstream of the powerplants about equal to or less than computed natural temperatures. The average annual river temperature in 1976 was 14.0 ? Celsius just upstream of the Atkinson-McDonough thermoelectric powerplants and 16.0 ? Celsius just downstream from the powerplants. During a low-flow period in June 1977 the heat load from the two powerplants caused an increase in river temperatures of about 7 ? Celsius and a subsequent decrease in the dissolved-oxygen concentration of about 0.2 milligrams per liter. During the June low-flow period, point sources contributed 63 percent of the ultimate biochemical oxygen demand and 97 percent of ammonium as nitrogen at the Franklin station. Oxidation of ultimate biochemical demand and ammonium caused dissolved-oxygen concentrations to decrease from about 8.0 milligrams per liter at river mile 299 to about 4.5 milligrams per liter at river mile 271. Dissolved orthophosphate is the nutrient presently limiting phytoplankton growth in the West Point Lake when water temperatures are greater than about 26 ? A three-dimensional digital model of ground-water flow was constructed to represent the dipping anisotropic beds of the Tesuque aquifer system underlying the Pojoaque River basin and vicinity, New Mexico. Simulations of steady-state conditions and historical ground-water withdrawals were consistent with observed data. The model was used to simulate the response of the aquifer system to an irrigation development plan in the Pojoaque River basin. Storage is the main source of water as 34.05 cubic feet per second (86 percent of the withdrawal rate) was simulated to be withdrawn from storage after 50 years of withdrawals for irrigation development; the maximum simulated water-level decline was 334 feet; and net simulated streamflow capture from the Rio Grande, Santa Cruz, Pojoaque, and Santa Fe Rivers was 5.63 cubic feet per second (14 percent of the withdrawal rate). The sensitivity of the model was tested by varying aquifer characteristics to the limits of the plausible range. Change in hydraulic head in Pojoaque River basin is most sensitive to hydraulic conductivity. In all simulations, after 50 years of withdrawals, the maximum simulated decline in hydraulic head ranged between 210 and 474 feet, storage in the aquifer system was the source of 80 to 90 percent of the water withdrawn from wells, and streamflow capture from the Rio Grande and its tributaries plus irrigation diversions from the tributaries of the Pojoaque River simulated a decrease in the flow of the Rio Grande of between 17.13 and 21.11 cubic feet per second.

Large withdrawals of ground water for irrigation are causing progressive declines of ground-water levels in some areas of Nebraska. An investigation was conducted to determine the technical feasibility of artificially recharging aquifers through wells and through surface spreading by means of impoundments, pits, and canals. Information gained from a literature search and from preliminary tests was used to design several artificial-recharge experiments. The experiments showed that large quantities of water can be recharged through wells and by surface spreading if conditions are favorable.

In the well experiments, about 0.5 billion gallons of water from an aquifer recharged by the Platte River was transported 3 miles by pipeline and recharged through a well into a Pleistocene sand and gravel aquifer near Aurora where ground-water levels are declining. The recharge rate was about 730 gallons per minute during two tests of 6 and 8 months duration. The rise in ground-water levels due to recharge extended more than a mile from the recharge well in both tests.

The pattern of ground-water-level buildup during the 8-month test was similar to that during the 6-month test. Two-thirds of the way through the test the rate of water-level buildup in the recharge well increased greatly because casing failure allowed a large amount of sediment to enter the well.

Although the chemical quality of the recharge water was markedly different from that of the native aquifer water, no evidence of clogging due to chemical reaction was detected; also, there was no evidence of clogging due to air entrainment or bacterial growth. Evaluation of water-level changes in the recharge well and in observation wells during the 6-month test indicated some clogging of the aquifer in the immediate vicinity of the recharge well due to a small amount (0.04 milligram per liter) of fine sediment in the recharge water. Analysis of water-level buildup in the recharge well during the 6-month test indicated that recharge could have continued at a rate of about 700 gallons per minute for several years before rehabilitation of the recharge well would have been necessary.

In surface-spreading experiments, the maximum sustained infiltration rates from a 24-foot-diameter ring infiltrometer set in loess at the well-recharge site near Aurora were about 0.5 foot per day during a 140day test. The recharge water caused water levels in a perched zone of saturation at depths between 36 and 38 feet to rise 15 feet, to within 21 feet of the surface, indicating that if the test had continued or if the impoundment area had been larger, the water level in the perched zone of saturation might have risen to the surface thereby reducing the infiltration rate.

The maximum sustained infiltration rate from a similar experiment in the Sand Hills near Tryon was 11 feet per day. Perching layers also retarded downward infiltration and caused lateral movement of water in the subsurface at this site.

Infiltration rates from re-use pits near the Aurora site ranged from 0.01 to 1.60 feet per day, indicating that the permeability of the subsurface material is extremely variable and that perching layers probably are absent in some areas.

Flow measurements in an irrigation canal excavated in loess near Farwell indicate an infiltration rate of 0.36 foot per day from a 2.7mile reach.

Existing methods for measuring discharge of irrigation systems in the High Plains region are not suitable to provide the pumpage data required by the High Plains Regional Aquifer System Analysis. Three portable flowmeters that might be suitable for obtaining fast and accurate discharge measure-ments on large irrigation systems were tested during 1979 under both laboratory and field conditions: propeller type gated-pipe meter, a Doppler meter, and a transient-time meter.

The gated-pipe meter was found to be difficult to use and sensitive to particulate matter in the fluid. The Doppler meter, while easy to use, would not function suitably on steel pipe 6 inches or larger in diameter, or on aluminum pipe larger than 8 inches in diameter. The transient-time meter was more difficult to use than the other two meters; however, this instrument provided a high degree of accuracy and reliability under a variety of conditions. Of the three meters tested, only the transient-time meter was found to be suitable for providing reliable discharge measurements on the variety of irrigation systems used in the High Plains region.
